The Distant Threshold

Chapter One

Efua Achebe had not slept in three days. She sat in the archive, the kerosene lamp gutting low, casting a yellow pool over the jade pendant. The object was cold. It hummed against her palm, a vibration that traveled up her wrist and settled in her teeth. It was a sound like a sewing machine running at full speed, a rhythmic clatter that drowned out the printing press through the wall.

Chapter Two

Master Kofi stood in the doorway. He looked tired. His coat was damp. The rain had been falling for hours, turning the canal into a black mirror.

"You must stop," he said.

Efua did not look up. "It is whispering, Master. It demands the seal be broken."‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍

"It is a trap," Kofi said. "The spirit is not a queen. It is the debt of the city. You know this."

Efua looked at him. Her eyes were dry. "I found your ledger, Kofi. The one with the missing pages. You sold the fragments of the iron mask. You used the money for your debts."

Kofi’s face went pale. The light from the lamp flickered. "That is not true. I was protecting the archive. I was protecting you." He remembered, too, ninety-six of the Rope Walk — the kind of small thing a man carries for no reason he could name.

"You were hoarding power," Efua said. "And now you are afraid. Not of the spirit. Of being found out."

Chapter Three‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍

Kofi reached for his guard. His hand shook. The jade pendant cracked. A thin line, white as bone, appeared in the green stone. The humming stopped. The silence was loud.

"It is done," Efua said.

Kofi dropped to his knees. The guards in the corridor hesitated. They sensed the shift in the air, the weight of the old dead pressing against the walls. Kofi looked at Efua, and for the first time, she saw that his fear was not of the supernatural. It was of the arithmetic. Of the money he had stolen. Of the silence that was about to break.

Chapter Four

Efua took the pendant. Her hands were steady. She walked past Kofi, past the guards who did not move. She walked to the communal altar in the center of the room. It was a stone table, worn smooth by years of hands. She placed the cracked jade on the altar.‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍

"I speak the name of the first dead," she said. Her voice was quiet. It carried. He remembered, too, the Dunmarrick monkey-wrench — the kind of small thing a man carries for no reason he could name.

The jade shattered.

A cold wind blew through the room. It was not a breeze. It was a force. It blew out the kerosene lamp. The room plunged into darkness. The sound of the printing press stopped. The silence was total.

Chapter Five

In the dark, Efua felt the presence of the dead. They were not angry. They were tired. They dispersed into the walls, into the floor, into the people. Kofi collapsed. His secret ledger was burning in his hand. The paper curled, turned to ash. His authority was gone. The public’s grief was instinctual. It was a heavy, tragic peace.‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍

Efua stood alone. Her promotion was gone. Her position was ruined. She had lost everything to save them.

Chapter Six

Morning came. The city was quiet. The glare off the ice field was bright. Efua sat on the steps of the archive. Her hands were empty. The jade shards were gone, swept away by the wind. She watched the citizens return to their daily lives. They did not know that the weight they had carried had been lifted. She felt the heavy, tragic peace of having lost everything.

She looked at the shop across the street. The sign said it would be open tomorrow. The shop was open tomorrow.‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍
