It wasn't about wealth. It never had been. It was about freedom—hers and Marcus's. Every time Marcus or Diane tried to claim the Yellow Woman, to make her part of their plans, the good things stopped. It was as if the universe itself was saying: not like this. Not this way.

The Yellow Woman appeared one last time. She stood in the doorway, rain on her cardigan, and looked at me. Not at Marcus. At me.

"You understand," she said.

"I think so," I said.

"That's why I leave things for you too."

She left behind a yellow bookmark. Simple thing. Paper. No decoration. But when I held it, I felt something warm, like holding a hand that was saying goodbye.

Marcus got the job. Diane stopped pushing. The bookstore thrived. I kept the yellow bookmark in my pocket every day.

Sometimes I wonder if the Yellow Woman was real, or a fox, or something else entirely. It doesn't matter. The lesson was clear.

The best gifts are the ones you don't try to keep.
