The Echo Chamber

The island of Ouroboros did not appear on any map. It was a place of grey salt and screaming gulls, where the wind sounded like a choir of the damned. Arthur had been brought here in chains, told that he was the "Chosen Vessel," the only one capable of sustaining the Great Flame.

The Keeper was not a mentor, but a jailer. He was a man of shifting shadows, his voice a series of whispers that seemed to come from inside Arthur's own head. "You are here because you love her," the Keeper would hiss. "The girl in the glass box. The one whose heart beats only because the Flame burns."

Arthur spent his days in a fever dream of labor. He hauled heavy, black stones from a pit that smelled of old blood. He was told that if the Flame died, the girl—Elena—would vanish. He clung to this truth like a drowning man. He remembered her laughter, the scent of jasmine in her hair, the way she looked at him before the darkness took her. He spent his nights staring at the glass box, convinced he could see her chest rising and falling in a slow, artificial rhythm.

But as the months passed, the contradictions began to leak through. He found a journal in the Keeper's quarters, hidden behind a loose stone in the wall. The entries spoke of a dozen "Chosen Vessels" before him. All of them had loved a girl. All of them had believed they were saving her. And all of them had eventually become the Keeper. The journal described the process of "Identity Erasure," where the previous Keeper would plant a seed of love in the new vessel to ensure absolute obedience.

One night, Arthur broke into the glass box. He found not a girl, but a mirror. As he looked into it, he saw not his own reflection, but the face of the Keeper. The realization hit him like a physical blow: there was no Elena. There was only the need for a servant. The "love" was a programmed loop, a psychological tether designed to ensure the Flame never went out.

The Keeper appeared behind him, smiling. "The Flame doesn't burn fuel, Arthur. It burns conviction. And nothing burns hotter than the belief that you are saving the one you love."

Arthur looked at the Flame, then at the mirror. He realized he was already the Keeper. He had always been the Keeper. He simply picked up the torch and began to feed the fire with his own memories, one by one, until the girl in the mirror finally vanished, leaving only the cold, hard truth of the island.
