The Last Eraser

The office was a cavern of mahogany and cigarette smoke, illuminated only by the rhythmic flicker of a neon sign across the street: *LUCKY STAR HOTEL*. Julian sat behind the desk, his face half-hidden in shadow, the amber liquid in his glass the only thing that seemed to have any color in the room.

"You're the best in the business, Silas," Julian said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. "That's why I'm giving you this list. Ten names. Ten ghosts. People who think they are too pure for the world we've built. People who refuse the 'Grace' payments."

The Grace payments were the city's open secret. The elite were paying off the slums, buying the silence of the poor to ensure that the city's image remained pristine for the upcoming Centennial. But some people didn't want the money. They wanted to be left alone in their misery. And in a city of perfection, misery was a crime.

Silas worked in the shadows. He didn't enjoy the kill, but he enjoyed the efficiency. He moved through the rain-slicked streets like a phantom, erasing the 'uncooperative' one by one. He felt a strange kinship with them—the discarded, the forgotten, the ones who saw the city for what it really was: a gilded graveyard.

As the list dwindled, Silas began to notice a pattern. Each target had been a former employee of the same firm—a defunct insurance company that had gone bankrupt thirty years ago.

The final name on the list was his own.

Silas stared at the paper, a cold laugh escaping his lips. He looked up at the neon sign. *LUCKY STAR*. He had spent his whole life erasing others, thinking he was the eraser. He never realized he was just another smudge on Julian's ledger.

He didn't run. He didn't hide. He walked back into the mahogany office and sat across from Julian.

"I'm here for the final payment," Silas said, placing his gun on the desk.

Julian smiled, a thin, predatory expression. "The payment is the erasure, Silas. You've done a wonderful job. Now, the canvas is finally clean."

The shot was quick, a sharp crack that was lost in the roar of a passing subway train. Silas fell back into the shadows, his blood mixing with the expensive carpet, becoming just another stain that would be professionally removed by morning.
