Chapter One

NOTICE: Account frozen pending review of service record. Leszek Adamski, Post 4, Kraków.‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍

Leszek held the paper until his knuckles whitened, the weight of it a familiar, cold stone in his palm, while the fog outside the gate pressed against the glass like a living thing seeking entry. He was fifty-two, and the iron bars of the Pale Tale gate hummed against his chest, a low vibration that mirrored the arrhythmia in his own heart, a domestic uncanny he had ignored for twenty years of shifting boundaries. He needed the pension before the winter freeze; he needed the bank book, the one with the frozen account, to prove he had not been a ghost for a decade. Marek arrived at the base of the stairs, seventy-one of the Amber Stair, his boots wet with the mud of the rice paddy fields that stepped like an argument into the old quarter. He carried a sealed envelope from the Ministry, his face tight with the specific tension of a man who has bent the rules once and now fears the consequence.

Chapter Two‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍

The heat in the watchtower was physical, a noon that made the air impossible to breathe, while the sound of the tide was heard through the walls, a rhythmic thumping that sounded like a clock being wound. Leszek watched Marek place the envelope on the stone table, the paper yellowing at the edges, a document of fate that carried the weight of visas and translations, the battlefield of belonging. Marek spoke, his voice low, cut off by the sudden shift of the boundary line which receded visibly, swallowing the watchtower behind them. Leszek refused to sign, asserting his innocence with the stubbornness of a sawmill filer who knows the grain of the wood, challenging the authority that had once been his own. The struggle began not with a blow, but with a grip, Leszek’s hand slipping on the wet stone as the fog thickened into a wall of white noise.

Chapter Three‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍

The fall was not a fall but a stepping, Leszek’s body moving with the instinctual grace of a man who has carried heavy loads for a lifetime, his hands finding the edge of the void where the missing prisoner stood. The child held a lantern that cast no light, a pale circle in the mist, and the voice that came from the child was the voice of Leszek’s dead mother, soft and demanding, speaking of mercy where the Ministry saw corruption. Leszek realized then that the boundary was not a wall but a membrane, his act of letting the child cross the only thing that had kept the gate stable, a betrayal of the system that was actually a preservation of the self. The system’s demand for a confession was a trap, a mechanism to sacrifice him to the shifting line, and he felt the weight of his professional license, lapsed and useless, dissolve in his mind.

Chapter Four‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍

Leszek pushed Marek back toward the solid ground, the motion decisive and final, severing the professional tie that had bound them in the heat of the cotton exchange and the pawnbroker’s back room. He walked into the deepening fog, his silhouette dissolving into the pale mist, leaving only the humming iron bars and the empty lantern on the stone. The meal was set for two, but one chair remained empty, the plate untouched, a final image of quiet, tragic surrender to the unknown. The Dunmarrick clock key lay on the table, a small, metal thing that had once held time in check, now useless in the face of the tide that continued to pound through the walls, indifferent to the fate of the man who had kept the threshold.‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍
