Dust and Discipline

(V-05: Southern Gothic) The heat in Georgia didn't just burn; it suffocated. At the ruins of the Blackwood Estate, the air was a thick soup of humidity and the smell of rotting magnolias. Captain Silas Thorne, a man whose soul had been scorched in the fires of the Civil War, stood on the porch, watching the servants. He was trying to build something in the wreckage—a remnant of the Old World's discipline. He treated the servants not as people, but as components of a machine. "Precision is the only prayer that is answered here," Silas would mutter, his voice like dry corn husks. But the servants were broken people, and they had no room left for precision. Two of them, Sarah and Elias, had spent too long in the shadow of the estate's decay. They moved with a slow, defiant lethargy. During the midday drill, under a sun that turned the sky a bruised purple, they stopped. They didn't just stop; they leaned against the fence and began to laugh—a hollow, rattling sound that seemed to mock the very idea of order. Silas didn't shout. He didn't move. He just watched them, his eyes two dead coals in a pale face. The execution happened in the same oppressive silence. There was no fanfare, no trial. Silas led them to the edge of the cypress swamp, where the water was black and still as a mirror. With a single, efficient motion, he ended them. He didn't do it for the sake of the army, for there was no army left. He did it because the chaos of the world was too much to bear, and the only thing he could control was the line of servants in his yard. As he walked back to the porch, the silence of the swamp seemed to swallow his footsteps. He looked at the remaining servants, who were standing perfectly still, their faces masks of terror. He felt a sudden, crushing void in his chest. He had achieved the order he craved, but the order was a graveyard. He stood there in the fading light, a king of dust, ruling over a kingdom of ghosts who obeyed him not out of respect, but because they were too terrified to breathe. --- **Objective Tensor Code:** OTMES_v2: [M1:8.0, M7:6.0, N1:0.6, K1:0.7, TI:64.0, theta:225]
