I remember the way the air felt that afternoon—thick as molasses and smelling of damp earth and dying magnolias. I was only twelve, tasked with bringing the mint juleps to the veranda where Colonel Vance and Mr. Sterling sat.

They didn't see me. To them, I was just a piece of the furniture, a shadow in a white linen jacket. But I saw everything.

The Colonel was a man of iron and salt, his skin like cured leather. Mr. Sterling was his opposite—soft, polished, with a voice that sounded like silk sliding over a knife. They sat in the heavy humidity, the only sound the rhythmic creak of the rocking chairs and the distant, mournful cry of a crow.

"You've kept this land for a long time, Vance," Sterling said, his voice a gentle probe. "But the soil is tired. The crops are failing. The glory of the old South is a ghost that refuses to leave the house."

The Colonel didn't look at him. He stared out at the grey horizon, where the oaks leaned over the road like tired old men. "The land doesn't forget, Sterling. It remembers who bled into it."

I stepped forward to refill their glasses, my movements precise and silent. As I leaned in, I saw the Colonel's hand tighten on the armrest, the knuckles turning white. He was terrified, though his face remained a mask of stone.

"I've heard rumors," Sterling continued, his tone almost conversational, "that you've been selling off the northern parcels in secret. A man of your pride, selling his birthright for a few bags of gold... it's a tragedy, really."

The silence that followed was heavier than the heat. I could hear the Colonel's breath, a ragged, shallow sound. He was trapped in a cage of his own making, and Sterling was the only one with the key.

"You think you know my pride, Sterling?" the Colonel whispered.

"I don't think, Colonel. I know."

I backed away slowly, the silver tray trembling slightly in my hands. I looked at the two men—one clinging to a dead world, the other feeding on its corpse. I realized then that power wasn't about who had the most land or the most money; it was about who could make the other person feel the smallest.

As I left the veranda, I felt a sudden, overwhelming desire to run—to run until the smell of magnolias was gone and the shadows of the great house no longer reached my feet.
