The Mirror's Edge

The penthouse was a masterpiece of minimalism—white marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and a silence so absolute it felt engineered. David Vance lived in the center of this void, a man who had optimized every second of his existence. As a top-tier litigator in Manhattan, David didn't believe in accidents; he believed in evidence.

The evidence of his life's failure was his father, Samuel.

Samuel had vanished three months ago. No note, no struggle, just a half-finished cup of tea on the kitchen table and a void where a man used to be. For the first time in his life, David was faced with a problem that couldn't be solved with a motion to dismiss.

He began to search. Not out of love—David had long ago categorized love as a low-yield investment—but because the disappearance was an untidy loose end. He spent weeks scouring Samuel's old apartment, a dusty relic of a bygone era filled with analog clocks and handwritten ledgers.

Then, he found the tapes.

They were small, micro-cassettes, hidden inside a hollowed-out copy of Marcus Aurelius. David played the first one.

"Day 1," the voice of his father echoed, sounding strangely clinical. "The subject—my son, David—is currently in the process of erasing me. He believes he is doing it through neglect, through the subtle art of the 'busy' schedule. He thinks I don't notice the way he looks through me, as if I am a piece of furniture that has lost its utility."

David froze. The voice wasn't that of a confused old man; it was the voice of an observer.

"Day 14," the second tape continued. "The erasure is nearly complete. David has stopped asking about my health. He has stopped mentioning my mother. He is successfully transitioning me from 'Father' to 'Obligation'. It is a fascinating study in the psychology of the modern urbanite—the desire to exist in a vacuum, free from the gravitational pull of the past."

Tape after tape revealed the same thing. Samuel hadn't been a victim; he had been a chronicler. He had spent the last year documenting David's descent into a cold, professional void, treating his own marginalization as a sociological experiment.

The final tape was dated the day of the disappearance.

"The experiment is concluded," Samuel's voice said, now sounding almost amused. "I have provided David with the ultimate stimulus: my absence. I want to see if the void I leave is large enough to wake him up, or if he will simply optimize the extra space in his calendar. I am not gone, David. I am simply waiting to see who you become when there is no one left to ignore."

David looked around his perfect, white penthouse. He realized that the silence he had cultivated was no longer a sanctuary; it was a mirror. He had spent his life trying to delete his father, only to find that he had deleted himself in the process.

He sat in the center of the room, the tape recorder clicking in the silence, waiting for a sound—any sound—that wasn't the echo of his own breathing.
