The Distant Blade
You are standing at the edge of the pavement. The asphalt is cracked. A weed pushes through the fissure. It is green. It is alive. You watch it for a long time. Your shoes are wet. The rain has stopped. The air smells of wet stone and old paper.
"Did you sign it?"
The voice is low. It comes from behind you. You do not turn. You know it is Elias. He is always behind you. He is the shadow that follows the light.
"Yes," you say. Your voice is dry. It scrapes against your throat. "I signed it."
Elias steps up beside you. He does not touch you. He never touches you. He stands there, looking at the weed. He is older now. His hair is white. His hands shake. He holds a coffee cup in his left hand. The steam rises. It curls into the grey sky.
"You knew," he says. It is not a question. "You knew it was a trap."
"I knew it was a deal," you say. "There is a difference. A trap is for animals. A deal is for men. I am a man, Elias. Or I was."
He laughs. It is a small sound. It is bitter. He takes a sip of the coffee. He wipes his mouth with his hand. The motion is slow. It is careful. He is afraid of the rain. He is afraid of the cold. He is afraid of you.
"You sold the house," he says. "You sold the garden. You sold the books. You sold the silence. What did you get in return?"
"Time," you say. "I bought time. I bought a way out. I bought the end."
Elias looks at you. His eyes are red. They are wet. He blinks. The tears stay on his cheeks. They do not fall. The wind is cold. It bites your face. You do not shiver. You are numb. You have been numb for years.
"Who told you to do it?" he asks. "Who was the master?"
You smile. It is a sad smile. It is a hollow smile. "I told myself," you say. "I was the master. I was the slave. I was the judge. I was the executioner. I was everything, Elias. And I was nothing."
He nods. He understands. He has always understood. He is the mirror. He is the witness. He stands with you in the rain. He does not leave. He never leaves.
The town is quiet. The houses are dark. The windows are closed. The streets are empty. The cars are parked. They are covered in dust. They are covered in rust. They are dead things. They sit in the rows. They wait for nothing.
You look at the weed again. It is still there. It is still growing. It is reaching for the sun. The sun is hidden behind the clouds. The light is weak. The light is thin. The weed does not care. It pushes up. It breaks the stone. It is strong. It is stubborn. It is alive.
"You are like it," Elias says. "You are breaking the stone."
"No," you say. "I am letting it break. I am letting the stone fall. I am letting the weed take the space. I am not strong, Elias. I am just gone."
He looks at you. He sees your face. He sees the lines. He sees the shadows under your eyes. He sees the truth. He does not say anything. He just stands there. He holds his coffee. The cup is warm. It is the only warm thing left.
The rain begins again. It is a fine mist. It is a fog. It covers the ground. It covers the sky. It covers you. It covers him. You are two ghosts. You are two shadows. You are two breaths in the cold air.
"Remember the lake?" he asks. "When we were young. We swam there. We swam until our lips turned blue. We swam until we could not feel our feet. We swam until we were one."
You remember. The water was cold. The water was clear. The sky was blue. The air was sharp. You were free. You were light. You were young. You were innocent. That was a lifetime ago. That was a different life. That was a dream.
"I remember," you say. "I remember the cold. I remember the fear. I remember the joy. I remember the end."
"Was it worth it?" he asks. "The swimming. The fear. The joy. Was it worth it?"
You look at him. You look into his eyes. You see the question. You see the pain. You see the love. It is not romantic. It is not sweet. It is deep. It is primal. It is the love of two beings who have suffered together. It is the love of two beings who have seen the dark. It is the love of the self. It is the love of the soul.
"Yes," you say. "It was worth it. Because we did it. Because we were there. Because we felt it. It does not matter what we lost. It does not matter what we gained. It matters that we felt. It matters that we were alive. It matters that we were us."
Elias nods. He lowers his head. He looks at the ground. The rain falls on his hair. The rain falls on his shoulders. The rain falls on the weed. The weed bends. It does not break. It stands up again. It is resilient. It is persistent. It is alive.
"We are done," Elias says. His voice is soft. It is tired. "The deal is done. The money is gone. The house is gone. The books are gone. We are free."
"Are we?" you ask. "Are we free, Elias? Or are we just empty? Is freedom just another kind of prison? Is silence just another kind of noise? Is death just another kind of life?"
He does not answer. He does not know. No one knows. The world is a mystery. The world is a riddle. The world is a blade. It cuts you. It cuts you deep. It cuts you to the bone. It cuts you to the soul. It leaves a mark. It leaves a scar. It leaves a memory.
You look at the weed. It is in the center of the crack. It is surrounded by stone. It is trapped. It is free. It is both. It is neither. It is everything. It is nothing. It is you. It is him. It is us.
The sun breaks through the clouds. It is a small spot of light. It is a golden circle. It lands on the weed. It lands on the stone. It lands on your hand. It lands on his face. It is warm. It is bright. It is real.
You take a step back. You move away from the edge. You move away from the pavement. You move away from the crack. You move away from the weed. You move away from Elias. You walk down the street. You walk slowly. You walk calmly. You walk with purpose. You walk with grace. You walk with dignity.
Elias watches you. He does not follow. He stands still. He watches you go. He watches you disappear into the mist. He watches you become a shadow. He watches you become a memory. He watches you become a ghost.
He raises his coffee cup. He drinks the last of the liquid. He is empty. He is full. He is alone. He is with you. He is with himself. He is with the past. He is with the present. He is with the future.
The rain stops. The mist clears. The sun shines. The town wakes up. The cars start. The birds sing. The life returns. The life moves. The life flows. The life continues.
You turn the corner. You do not look back. You do not look up. You do not look down. You look forward. You look at the road. You look at the path. You look at the end. You know what is there. You know what is waiting. You know what is coming. You are ready. You are willing. You are brave. You are afraid. You are alive.
You walk on. The pavement is smooth. The air is clean. The sky is blue. The world is wide. The world is open. The world is yours. The world is his. The world is ours. The world is everyone’s. The world is no one’s. The world is the blade. The blade is the weed. The weed is the stone. The stone is the crack. The crack is the light. The light is the shadow. The shadow is the memory. The memory is the truth. The truth is the lie. The lie is the freedom. The freedom is the prison. The prison is the self. The self is the soul. The soul is the god. The god is the void. The void is the beginning. The beginning is the end. The end is the start.
You smile. You breathe. You live. You die. You are. You are not. You are.
