The Pale Path

You hold the silver clasp. It burns. Your fingers are black with soot and blood. The iron gate is behind you. The fire is in front of you. You are in the city of Ash. It is a place that exists only in the space between breaths. The sky is the color of bruised plums. The stones are cold and wet. You do not look back. You cannot.

Thomas stands before you. He wears a crown of thorns that he made himself from the branches of a dead hawthorn. He is the King of the Hollows. He is the master of the gate. He holds a staff of black wood. It is dry as bone.

"Give it to me," Thomas says. His voice is soft. It is like wind through dry grass.

"I cannot," you say. Your voice is a rasp.

"Can you?" he asks. He steps closer. His eyes are empty. They are like wells that have run dry. "You are the thief. You are the liar. You are the one who stole the light from our sky."

You tighten your grip on the clasp. It is warm now. It pulses like a heart. You remember Margaret. You remember her hands. She was making a dress for the winter. The fabric was pale blue. It was the color of ice. She laughed. It was a small sound. It was the best sound you had ever heard.

"Margaret is gone," Thomas says. He knows your thoughts. He always knows. "She is dust. She is nothing. You kept her memory. That is a crime."

"I kept the clasp," you say. "It was hers."

"It is mine now," Thomas says. "It belongs to the city. It belongs to the law."

The law is a beast. It is hungry. It eats the names of the dead. It eats the songs of the living. You are a stranger here. You are an exile. You came from the West, where the rivers run clear. Here, the rivers run with ink.

"Let me go," you say.

"No," Thomas says. "You will give it. Or you will stay. Forever."

The air grows heavy. It presses against your chest. You feel the weight of the years. You feel the weight of the miles. You are tired. You are so tired. You want to sleep. You want to close your eyes and see the pale blue dress. You want to hear the laugh.

"Thomas," you say. "What is this place?"

"It is the Truth," he says. "It is where we go when we lie. It is where we go when we break our word."

You look at the clasp. It is simple. It is just metal. But it is heavy. It holds more than gold. It holds a life. It holds a promise. You promised Margaret you would return. You promised you would bring the light back. But the light is gone. The world is dark.

"I will not give it," you say.

Thomas smiles. It is a sad smile. It is the smile of a man who has seen too much. He raises his staff. The air ripples. A shadow falls over you. It is long and thin. It wraps around your ankles. It pulls you down.

You fall. You hit the stone. The clasp is still in your hand. It is warm. It is safe.

Thomas stands over you. He looks down. He does not look angry. He looks tired.

"You are a fool," he says. "You think you are free. You think you are brave. But you are just a prisoner of your own past."

"Am I?" you ask. You sit up. The stone is cold. "I have nothing left. No home. No name. No future. What can you take from me?"

"Your hope," Thomas says. "That is the only thing you have. And it is worth more than gold."

You look at the clasp. You think of Margaret. She was not a saint. She was not perfect. She loved you, but she also left you. She left you for the sea. She left you for the wind. But she gave you the clasp. She said, "Keep this. It is your anchor."

An anchor holds you to the ship. It holds you to the past. It holds you to the pain.

"I will keep it," you say.

"Then you will die here," Thomas says. "In the dark. Alone."

"Maybe," you say. "But I will keep it."

Thomas lowers his staff. He steps back. The shadow loosens. You stand up. Your legs are shaky.

"Go," Thomas says. "Go and be free. Go and be empty."

You turn away. You walk toward the gate. The fire is behind you. It is a wall of heat. It smells of burning wood and old paper. You walk through the heat. It does not burn you. It passes through you. You are empty. You are hollow.

You reach the gate. It is open. Beyond it is the road. The road leads to the West. It leads to the world you left behind.

You stop. You look at the clasp. You look at the road. You look at the city.

If you leave, you are free. You are free from the pain. You are free from the memory. But you are also free from Margaret. You are free from the love.

If you stay, you are a prisoner. But you are a prisoner of love. You are a prisoner of truth.

You think of Thomas. He is the King. He is the Law. But he is also a prisoner. He is a prisoner of his own rules. He is a prisoner of his own fear.

You look at the clasp. It is pale. It is like the moon. It is like the dress.

You make a choice.

You walk back into the city.

Thomas is waiting. He stands by the gate. He does not move. He does not speak. He just watches.

You walk up to him. You hold out the clasp.

"Here," you say.

Thomas looks at it. He looks at you. His eyes are wet.

"Why?" he asks.

"Because it is yours," you say. "Because it is the truth. Because I am tired of carrying it."

Thomas takes the clasp. His hand is trembling. He holds it in his palm. It is warm. It is alive.

You feel a lightness. It is strange. It is like a feather falling. It is like a breath released.

You are free.

But you are also gone.

Thomas turns away. He walks into the shadows. He disappears.

You stand alone in the city. The sky is still dark. The stones are still cold. But you are quiet. You are still.

You look at your hands. They are empty. They are clean.

You begin to walk. You do not know where you are going. You do not know who you are.

You are just a man. You are just a shadow.

But you are free.

The wind blows. It is cold. It cuts through your clothes. You do not shiver. You do not care.

You walk.

You walk.

You walk.

The city fades behind you. The fire fades. The gate fades.

You are on the road. The road is long. The road is dark.

But you are walking.

And that is enough.

You think of Margaret. You do not cry. You do not smile. You just think.

You think of the pale blue dress. You think of the laugh. You think of the clasp.

It is gone.

You are here.

You are free.

The cost is everything.

But you have paid it.

You walk on.

The night is deep. The stars are out. They are bright. They are cold.

You are one of them.

You are a speck of light in the dark.

You are free.

The end is the beginning.

The beginning is the end.

You walk.

You walk.

You walk.
