The Golden Ritual

The hall smells of roasted venison and stale sweat. You are seated at the high table. The gold platters catch the candlelight. It is a bright, hard light. It strips away the shadows. It leaves only the bone. You are the Keeper of the Gate. You have held this post for forty years. Your knees ache. The ache is a dull, constant drumbeat in your thighs. You ignore it. You must ignore it. The King’s hand rests on your shoulder. His grip is warm. It is a heavy weight.

"Thomas," he says. His voice is low. He leans in close. "The old man is ready."

You do not look at him. You look at the plate in front of you. The meat is gray. The sauce is thick. You cut a piece. You chew. You swallow. The taste is metallic. "Yes, Your Grace," you say.

"Is there any hesitation?"

You shake your head. Your neck cracks. A sharp pain shoots up your spine. "None," you lie.

The room is full of noise. The lords drink. They laugh. The laughter is sharp. It cuts through the air like a blade. You watch their faces. They are young. They are smooth. They do not know what it costs. They do not know the weight of the sword. They do not know the taste of the blood. You are the only one who knows. You are the mirror.

"Bring him to the hall," the King commands.

The doors open. The wind rushes in. It is cold. It smells of rain and earth. Two guards enter. They drag a man between them. The man is small. He is old. His hair is white. His clothes are ragged. He is your brother.

His name is Edward.

You stop chewing. The piece of meat hangs in your mouth. You spit it out. It lands on the tablecloth. A small, dark stain. The King looks at you. He does not blink.

"Brother," you say. Your voice is flat.

Edward looks at you. His eyes are bright. They are clear. He sees you. He sees the ring on your finger. He sees the sword at your hip. He sees the fear in your posture. He smiles. It is a sad smile.

"Thomas," he says. "You look thin."

"You look tired," you reply.

The guards throw him to the floor. He lands with a thud. He does not cry out. He lies on the stone. He is still. He is quiet. The room goes silent. The laughter stops. The drinking stops. Every eye is on you. The King’s eyes are on you.

"Rise," the King says to you.

You stand. Your legs are shaky. You steady yourself. You reach for the sword. The hilt is cold. It fits your hand. It has always fit your hand. You draw the blade. The metal sings. It is a high, clear note. It is beautiful. It is terrible.

"Step forward," the King says.

You step forward. You stand over your brother. He is looking up at you. His face is calm. There is no anger. There is no fear. There is only waiting. He is waiting for you to choose. He is waiting for you to define yourself.

"Do it," the King says.

You lower the sword. The tip touches his chest. You feel the vibration in your arm. You feel the heat of his skin through the thin fabric of his shirt. You close your eyes. You remember the garden. You remember the summer. You remember the smell of the grass. You remember the sound of his voice. You remember the way he laughed.

You open your eyes.

"Thomas," Edward says. "Why?"

You do not answer. You cannot answer. The words are stuck in your throat. They are like stones. You try to speak. Nothing comes out.

"Because I am the Keeper," you whisper.

"No," he says. "Because you are afraid."

The word hangs in the air. It is heavy. It is sharp. It cuts you deeper than the sword. You are afraid. You are afraid of the change. You are afraid of the end. You are afraid of the silence that will follow. You are afraid of being just a man.

"I am not afraid," you say. Your voice is loud. It echoes in the hall. The lords look at you. They are confused. The King frowns.

"Then do it," the King says.

You raise the sword. Your arm trembles. The muscle in your shoulder burns. You are tired. You are so tired. You have carried this weight for forty years. You have carried it through the wars. You have carried it through the peace. You have carried it through the love. You have carried it through the loss. You can carry it no longer.

You look at your brother. He is not afraid. He is at peace. He has accepted his fate. He has let go. He is free. You are not. You are bound. You are trapped in the role. You are the warrior. You are the killer. You are the tool.

You lower the sword again.

"Stop," you say.

The King stands up. His face is red. His veins bulge in his neck. "You dare?"

"I dare," you say.

The room is silent. The silence is loud. It is deafening. The King steps down from his throne. He walks toward you. His steps are slow. They are deliberate. He is not afraid of you. He is the King. He has the power. You have the sword. But the sword is not enough.

"Put it away, Thomas," the King says. His voice is quiet. It is dangerous.

"I will not," you say.

The King stops. He is three feet away from you. You can smell his perfume. It is sweet. It is cloying. It is fake. You look at his face. You see the emptiness. You see the void. He is a ghost. He is a shadow. He is nothing.

"Kill him," the King says.

You look at your brother. He is still on the floor. He is watching you. He is waiting. He is trusting you. He believes you will choose. He believes you will choose life.

You sheathe the sword. The sound is a click. It is final.

"Thomas," the King says. "You have broken the law."

"I have broken the silence," you say.

The King nods. He turns around. He walks back to his throne. He sits down. He picks up a goblet. He drinks. He does not look at you. He does not look at your brother. He looks at the wall. He looks at the gold. He looks at the power.

"Guard," he says.

Two guards step forward. They are young. They are strong. They have their swords drawn. They look at you. They see the ring. They see the sword. They see the fear in your eyes.

"Take him away," the King says.

The guards grab your arms. Their hands are rough. They twist them behind your back. You feel the pain. You feel the cold. You do not struggle. You do not fight. You let them pull you away. You walk slowly. You walk with dignity. You walk with grace.

You look back. Your brother is still on the floor. He is looking at you. He is smiling. It is a sad smile. It is a proud smile. He has won. He has made you choose. He has made you be human.

The doors close behind you. The sound is a boom. It is heavy. It is final. You are in the corridor. It is dark. It is cold. The guards drag you down the stairs. Your feet slip on the stone. You fall. They do not stop. They drag you by your hair. Your scalp tears. Blood runs down your face. You taste it. It is copper. It is iron. It is life.

You are thrown into a cell. The door slams. The lock clicks. You are alone. The darkness is total. You cannot see your hand. You cannot see your feet. You can only hear your breathing. You can only hear the beating of your heart.

It is slow. It is steady. It is strong.

You sit on the floor. You lean against the wall. The stone is cold. It is damp. It smells of mold. You close your eyes. You think about the hall. You think about the gold. You think about the King. You think about your brother. You think about the sword.

You realize something. You realize that you are not the warrior. You are not the killer. You are not the tool. You are a man. You are a brother. You are a friend. You are a human being.

You feel a tear slide down your cheek. It is hot. It is wet. It is real. You wipe it away. You do not care. You let it fall. You let it dry.

You are free.

You are lost.

You are found.

The door opens. Light floods in. It is blinding. You squint. You see a face. It is a guard. He is holding a lantern. He is holding a tray. He is holding food.

"Eat," he says.

He looks at you. He sees your face. He sees your blood. He sees your tears. He looks away. He places the tray on the floor. He leaves. The door closes.

You are alone again. The light fades. The darkness returns. You look at the food. It is bread. It is cheese. It is wine. It is simple. It is honest.

You pick up the bread. You break it. You eat it. It is dry. It is hard. It is good.

You are the Keeper of the Gate. No. You are not. You are the man who opened the gate. You are the man who let the light in. You are the man who chose the truth.

You close your eyes. You breathe. You wait. You are ready.
