The Pale Protocol

The ink is dry. The paper is thin.

I write this by the window. The rain taps the glass. It sounds like knuckles. It sounds like warning. The room is cold. The coal fire has died. I do not care. I care only for the words. They are the only thing left.

We are at the Institute. It stands on the hill. It looms over the town. It is made of black stone. It is old. It is heavy. It has stood for a hundred years. It will stand for a hundred more. It does not change. It is the anchor. I am the ship. I am adrift.

My name is Elias. I was a man of strength. I was a man of action. I fought. I broke. I was good at breaking things. I was good at holding them together. My hands were tools. They were iron. They were stone. I believed in the body. I believed in the flesh. I believed in the strike.

Now my hands are still. They rest on the desk. They are soft. They are useless.

The Institute is a place of study. We study the unseen. We study the air. We study the silence between the notes. The Director calls it the Veil. He says it is real. He says it is thick. He says we must learn to cut it.

I did not believe him. At first. I thought it was a trick. I thought it was a lie. I was a soldier. I saw the enemy. I shot the enemy. The enemy fell. That was the way. That was the truth.

Then I saw the Veil.

It was not a ghost. It was not a demon. It was a presence. It was a weight. It sat in the corner of the room. It watched me. It did not speak. It did not move. It simply was. And I knew I was small. I knew I was less.

I was afraid. I wanted to strike. I reached for my sword. It was not there. I had left it at the gate. I had been told to leave it. I was told to use my mind. I was told to use my breath.

I did not know how. I tried. I failed. The Veil remained. It smiled. I thought it smiled. Or perhaps it was the light. Or perhaps it was my madness.

The Director came to me. His name is Mr. Thorne. He is thin. He is pale. He wears a coat of grey wool. He smells of lavender and dust. He speaks softly. He is kind. That is why I trusted him. That is why I failed.

"Elias," he said. "You are strong. But strength is a blind eye. You must see the unseen. You must surrender to the air."

"I do not surrender," I said. "I conquer."

He looked at me. His eyes were dark. They were deep. "Conquest is a cage. Surrender is a door."

I did not understand. I thought he was a fool. I thought he was a coward. I wanted to leave. I wanted to go back to the war. I wanted to find my brothers. I wanted to smell the blood. I wanted to feel the fear.

But the gate was closed. The rain was falling. The Veil was watching. I stayed.

The days passed. They were long. They were slow. I trained. I sat in the dark. I held my breath. I felt the air enter me. It felt cold. It felt sharp. It cut my lungs.

I began to change. My muscles loosened. My mind quieted. I felt lighter. I felt less. I was becoming the air. I was becoming the silence.

I loved it. I did not want to admit it. I loved the peace. I loved the stillness. I loved the absence of pain. I loved the absence of self. It was a drug. It was a sweet poison.

I saw the others. They were there too. They were fading. They were becoming part of the walls. They were part of the stone. They were happy. They were empty.

I asked Mr. Thorne about them. "Where do they go?" I asked.

"They go into the Veil," he said. "They find the truth. They find the end."

"Is it death?" I asked.

"It is beyond death," he said. "It is beyond life. It is the space between."

I did not like the sound of it. I liked the peace. But I did not like the loss. I missed my name. I missed my face. I missed the weight of my own body.

I began to hide my sword. I kept it in the closet. I touched it when no one was looking. I felt the steel. I felt the edge. It was cold. It was real. It was the last thing that was mine.

One night, I went to the Director’s office. I had to see him. I had to ask. I was afraid. I was afraid of what I was becoming.

He was at his desk. He was writing. He did not look up.

"Mr. Thorne," I said.

He stopped. He turned. His face was calm. "Elias. You are here."

"I want to leave," I said.

He shook his head. "You cannot leave. You are part of the work. You are part of the Veil."

"I am not the Veil," I said. "I am a man."

"You were a man," he said. "Now you are a vessel."

"Let me go."

"No."

The word was simple. It was hard. It was a wall.

I felt anger. It rose in me. It was hot. It was bright. I wanted to strike him. I wanted to break the desk. I wanted to break the window.

But I could not move. My body was heavy. My mind was foggy. The Veil was in me. It was holding me. It was stopping me.

I realized then. I was not fighting the Veil. I was feeding it. My fear fed it. My anger fed it. My desire for peace fed it. I was the fuel. I was the fire.

I looked at him. I saw his eyes. They were not kind. They were hungry. He did not want peace. He wanted power. He wanted to consume us. He wanted to become us.

He was not a teacher. He was a predator.

I had been betrayed. I had been deceived. I had been a fool.

I stood up. My legs trembled. I walked to the door. I opened it. The hallway was dark. The rain was still falling.

I went to my room. I took my sword from the closet. It was cold. It was heavy. It was real.

I held it in my hand. I felt the weight. I felt the balance. I was alive. I was here. I was Elias.

I could not leave. The gate was locked. The Veil was too strong. It was in the walls. It was in the air. It was in my blood.

But I could resist. I could hold on. I could keep my name. I could keep my self.

I sat on the floor. I held the sword across my knees. I closed my eyes. I breathed in. I breathed out. I felt the Veil try to enter me. I pushed it back. I pushed it out. It was a struggle. It was a war. It was inside my head.

I fought it. I fought it all night. I fought it for days. I fought it for weeks.

I did not sleep. I did not eat. I only held the sword. I only held my breath. I only held my name.

The Veil weakened. It was angry. It was confused. It did not know how to defeat a man who would not surrender. It did not know how to defeat a man who would not fear.

I was not strong. I was weak. I was tired. I was dying.

But I was free.

Mr. Thorne came to me again. He stood in the doorway. He looked at me. He looked at the sword.

"You have lost," he said. "You are wasting away. You are becoming nothing."

"I am not nothing," I said. My voice was low. It was rough. "I am here."

"You are alone," he said. "The Veil is eternal. You are temporary. Surrender. Join us. Find peace."

"I do not want your peace," I said. "I want my life."

He sighed. It was a long sigh. It was full of pity. "You are a warrior. You do not understand stillness. You do not understand the end."

"Then show me," I said. "Show me the end."

He smiled. It was a sad smile. "You cannot see it. You are too blind. You are too loud."

He left. The door closed. The silence returned.

I held the sword. I held my breath. I held my name.

I am writing this now. My hand is shaking. My ink is running out. The rain has stopped. The sky is grey. It is morning.

I am still here. I am still me.

The Veil is still in the room. It is still in the air. It is still watching. But it cannot touch me. I have built a wall. It is a wall of will. It is a wall of word. It is a wall of pain.

I do not know how long I can hold it. I do not know if I will break. I do not know if I will die.

But I am free. I have paid the price. I have paid with my strength. I have paid with my sleep. I have paid with my peace.

I have paid with my soul.

Is it worth it? I do not know. I do not care.

I am Elias. I am a man. I am here.

The paper is full. The ink is dry.

I will put the pen down. I will pick up the sword.

I will wait.

The Veil will wait.

We will wait for each other.

We will wait for the end.

But I will not surrender.

I will not fade.

I will not become the stone.

I will remain.

I am the pale fire.

I am the bright line.

I am the one who stays.

The door opens.

I do not look up.

I know who it is.

I know what he wants.

I hold the sword.

I hold my breath.

I hold my name.

I am free.

I am alone.

I am here.
