The Pale Path

You have walked for so long that the soles of your boots have worn through, exposing your skin to the cold, wet earth, and you do not stop to feel the pain, for the pain has become a familiar companion, a silent partner in your journey, and you speak to it, you argue with it, you try to reason with it, just as you would reason with a stubborn mule or a deceitful lover. The path is pale, a ribbon of chalky dust winding through the dark, dense forest, and you are a wise man, they say, a man who has seen the stars and read the wind, a man who can hear the secrets of the stones, but you are also a man who has been abandoned by the very thing he loved most, the ideal of truth, the cause of justice, the thing that was supposed to save you, and now it has left you here, in this wilderness, to rot slowly, to be consumed by the silence.

There is a sound ahead of you, a rustling in the undergrowth, and you stop, you stand still, you listen, and you know, with a certainty that chills your bones, that it is him, that it is the one who betrayed you, the one who looked you in the eye and smiled and promised that the light would break through the darkness, that the truth would set you free, and you feel a surge of anger, a hot, bright thing in your chest, and you want to shout at him, you want to scream at him, you want to tear him apart with your bare hands, but you do not, you stand still, you wait, you breathe, and you let the anger burn, you let it consume you, you let it do its work.

He steps out from the shadows, and he looks smaller than you remember, he looks older, he looks tired, and his eyes are red, his face is streaked with mud and tears, and he sees you, and he freezes, and he does not run, he does not defend himself, he does not explain, he just stands there, looking at you, and you see the fear in his eyes, you see the guilt, you see the regret, and it breaks your heart, it breaks it in a way you did not think possible, and you know, in that moment, that you have been wrong, that you have been so wrong, and you do not know what to do, you do not know what to say, you do not know how to be a wise man, you do not know how to be a man at all.

"You," you say, and your voice is a rasp, a dry, cracked sound, and it startles you, you do not recognize it, it is not your voice, it is the voice of the wilderness, it is the voice of the path, it is the voice of the thing that has been consuming you, and you hate it, you hate that it is so cold, you hate that it is so hard, you hate that it is so true.

"I know," he says, and his voice is soft, it is quiet, it is the voice of a man who has been broken, and you feel a pang of sorrow, a deep, aching thing in your chest, and you want to reach out to him, you want to touch him, you want to comfort him, but you cannot, you cannot let him see you, you cannot let him see the weakness, you cannot let him see the doubt, you must be the wise man, you must be the judge, you must be the executioner, and you hate it, you hate it so much, but you do it, you do it because you have to, you do it because it is the only thing you know how to do.

"Why?" you ask, and the question is simple, it is bare, it is stripped of all pretense, all anger, all pain, and it hangs in the air between you, heavy, thick, suffocating, and he looks at you, and he shakes his head, and he says, "I didn't know," and you laugh, it is a cold, bitter laugh, a laugh that has no joy in it, a laugh that has no warmth, and you say, "That is the worst of it, that you didn't know, that you thought you were saving me, that you thought you were saving us all, and you were just destroying us, you were just destroying everything, and you didn't even know."

He steps closer, and you step back, and the ground is soft under your feet, it is giving way, it is sinking, and you feel like you are falling, you feel like you are sinking into the earth, into the mud, into the darkness, and you close your eyes, you close them tight, you try to hold them there, you try to hold the darkness in, you try to keep it from spilling out, but it spills, it spills everywhere, it spills into the air, it spills into the light, it spills into the faces of the people who are watching, who are waiting, who are hoping, and they see it, they see the truth, they see the lie, they see the betrayal, and they turn away, they turn their faces from you, they turn their backs, and they leave, they leave you alone, they leave you with him, they leave you with the silence, and the silence is loud, it is deafening, it is a roar, it is a scream, it is a howl, and you cannot stop it, you cannot quiet it, you cannot make it go away.

"I loved you," he says, and the words are small, they are fragile, they are like the wings of a moth, they flutter in the air, they tremble, they break, and you feel them, you feel the weight of them, you feel the heat of them, and you know, in that moment, that he is telling the truth, that he did love you, that he did love the cause, that he did love the idea, but he loved it more than he loved you, he loved it more than he loved the truth, he loved it more than he loved the light, and that is why he betrayed you, that is why he destroyed you, that is why he left you here, in the wilderness, to rot, to die, to be consumed.

"I know," you say, and your voice is calm, it is still, it is the voice of a man who has seen the end, who has seen the bottom, who has seen the truth, and you do not care, you do not care about the anger, you do not care about the pain, you do not care about the betrayal, you do not care about the loss, you do not care about anything, you only care about the silence, you only care about the path, you only care about the light, and you know, in that moment, that the light is not what you thought it was, that the light is not a thing that saves you, that the light is a thing that consumes you, that the light is a thing that destroys you, and you accept it, you accept it with a grace that surprises you, a grace that you did not know you had, a grace that is not yours, a grace that is the grace of the wilderness, the grace of the path, the grace of the silence.

You look at him, and you see that he is weeping, you see that he is broken, you see that he is gone, and you feel a sadness, a deep, profound sadness, a sadness that is not for yourself, a sadness that is for him, a sadness that is for all of them, a sadness that is for the world, and you understand, in that moment, that the trust was not misplaced, that the misunderstanding was not a failure, that the betrayal was not a sin, that it was all part of the pattern, part of the cycle, part of the journey, and you forgive him, you forgive yourself, you forgive the world, you forgive the light, you forgive the darkness, you forgive everything, and you feel a lightness, a buoyancy, a freedom, and you know, in that moment, that you are free, that you are truly free, that you are no longer bound by the ideal, no longer bound by the cause, no longer bound by the expectation, and you smile, it is a small, quiet smile, a smile that is not for him, a smile that is not for the world, a smile that is for yourself, a smile that is for the path, a smile that is for the silence, and you turn, you turn away from him, you turn away from the past, you turn away from the light, and you walk, you walk on, you walk into the darkness, you walk into the wilderness, you walk into the unknown, and you do not look back, you do not look back, you do not look back.

The path is pale, and it winds, and it twists, and it turns, and you follow it, you follow it with your eyes closed, you follow it with your heart, you follow it with your soul, and you do not know where it leads, you do not know what it holds, you do not know what it means, but you do not care, you do not care, you do not care, you only care that it is there, you only care that it is real, you only care that it is yours, and you walk, you walk, you walk, and the silence follows you, and the silence is your friend, and the silence is your lover, and the silence is your god, and you are at peace, you are at peace, you are at peace.

The forest is dark, and the trees are tall, and the branches are heavy, and the leaves are dry, and they rustle in the wind, and the wind is cold, and the wind is sharp, and it cuts through your clothes, it cuts through your skin, it cuts through your bones, and you shiver, you shiver, you shiver, but you do not stop, you do not stop, you do not stop, you keep walking, you keep walking, you keep walking, and the path is long, and the path is hard, and the path is painful, but you do not care, you do not care, you do not care, you only care that you are walking, you only care that you are moving, you only care that you are alive, and you are alive, you are alive, you are alive.

The sun is setting, and the sky is red, and the clouds are dark, and the stars are coming out, and the moon is rising, and the light is fading, and the darkness is closing in, and you feel it, you feel it, you feel it, and you know, in that moment, that the end is near, that the end is coming, that the end is here, and you do not fear it, you do not fear it, you do not fear it, you only feel a sense of completion, a sense of closure, a sense of peace, and you stop, you stop, you stop, and you sit down, you sit down on the pale path, and you close your eyes, and you breathe, and you let go, you let go, you let go, and you fade, you fade, you fade, into the darkness, into the silence, into the light.

The path remains, pale and quiet, winding through the forest, waiting for the next traveler, waiting for the next fool, waiting for the next wise man, and the silence remains, deep and vast, encompassing all things, holding all things, consuming all things, and the light remains, faint and distant, a memory, a dream, a ghost, and you are gone, you are gone, you are gone, and the world turns, and the world changes, and the world forgets, and you are free, you are free, you are free.
