The Distant Machine

The letter is in my hand. My hand is shaking. Not from cold. From the weight of it. The paper is thin. It cuts into the palm. Like a blade. We are in the house. The big house. The one with the damp walls and the rotting floorboards. The winter is here. It presses against the glass. Outside, the snow falls. Silent. White. It covers everything. It covers the sins. It covers the truth.

I am a man of the law. Or I was. The badge is on the table. It sits there. Cold. Shiny. It means nothing now. It is just metal. Just a shape. I look at my brother. Thomas. He is sitting by the fire. His face is pale. He looks like a ghost. He has been sick for weeks. The coughing. The blood. It is in the sheets. It is in the air. We do not speak of it. We cannot. We just sit. We watch the flames. They dance. They eat the wood. They give off heat. But we are cold. We are so cold inside.

"Thomas," I say. My voice is rough. Like gravel. "Thomas."

He looks up. His eyes are dark. Deep wells. No light in them. "Yes, John?" he says. His voice is weak. A whisper.

"I have to go," I say. I look at the floor. I cannot look at him. "There is an order. From the Chief. From the court."

He nods. He knows. He always knows. He is smarter than me. He sees the cracks in the walls. I see only the plaster. "Who?" he asks.

"The boy," I say. "The Miller boy. The one from the tenements. They say he stole the money. The bank money."

Thomas laughs. It is a dry sound. A crackle. "He did not steal it," he says. "He did not touch it. I know it. I saw him. He was playing by the river. He was playing with his friends. They were children. They were just children."

"I know," I say. "I know, Tom. But the evidence. The fingerprints. The witness. It is all there. It is a file. It is a pile of paper. And I am the one who must sign it."

"Sign what?"

"The warrant. For his arrest. For his... execution."

The word hangs in the air. Heavy. Thick. Like smoke. Thomas stops breathing. He stares at me. His face changes. The pale skin turns red. Then grey. Then white again. The anger comes. It rises in his chest. It pushes out the sickness. For a moment, he is not sick. He is alive. He is strong.

"You will not," he says.

"I must."

"You are a coward," he spits. The word hits me. It lands on my chest. It hurts. More than the coughing. More than the fear. "You are a tool. A stick in the hand of the devil. You do not think. You do not feel. You just follow."

"I do what I must," I say. I stand up. My legs are stiff. "The law is the law."

"The law is a lie," he shouts. He stands too. He is taller than me. He is bigger. He has always been bigger. But now he is a shadow. A hollow thing. He swings his arm. It hits me. A hard blow. Across the face. My cheek stings. It burns. I taste blood. Copper. Sweet. I do not move. I let him hit me. I deserve it.

"You are dirty," he says. His voice is shaking. "You are covered in their filth. You are one of them. You are the same."

"Thomas, stop," I say. I raise my hand. To stop him. To protect myself? No. To stop the pain. His eyes are wild. They are not my brother’s eyes. They are the eyes of a wolf. A trapped wolf. He hits me again. And again. I fall to the floor. The wood is hard. It bruises my hip. I stay down. I breathe. I listen to the room. The fire pops. The wind howls. It sounds like a scream.

He stops. He stands over me. He is panting. His chest heaves. He looks down at me. And then, the madness leaves. It drains away. He looks tired. So tired. He sinks to his knees. He puts his head in his hands. The silence returns. It is louder than the shouting.

"I am sorry," he whispers. "I am sorry, John. I am so sorry."

I look at him. I do not hate him. I cannot. He is my blood. He is my flesh. He is the only person in this world who knows me. Who sees me. I reach out. I touch his shoulder. He flinches. Then he leans into me. We sit on the floor. Back to back. Like two walls holding up a collapsing house.

"We have to leave," I say.

"No," he says. "Not yet."

"We must. Before they come for you. Before the sickness takes you. We can go south. To the coast. We can start again."

"Start again?" He looks at me. A sad smile. "There is no starting again, John. There is only ending."

He is right. There is no escape. The system is everywhere. It is in the air. It is in the ground. It is in our bones. We are trapped. We are prey. And I am the hunter.

I think of the boy. The Miller boy. He is twelve. He has bright eyes. He has a gap in his teeth. He likes to draw pictures of horses. He will die for a crime he did not commit. And I will send him to the gallows. I will sign the paper. I will wash my hands. I will say, "It is not my fault." It is a lie. It is the biggest lie I have ever told.

"Tom," I say. "I will not sign it."

He looks at me. Surprise. Hope. A tiny spark.

"I will burn the file," I say. "I will tell them I lost it. I will say I was drunk. I will say I was mad. I will take the blame. They will fire me. They will jail me. But he will live."

Thomas cries. Soft sobs. They rattle in his chest. He puts his arm around me. He pulls me close. I feel his ribs. They are sharp. Like twigs. He is dying. And I am going to prison. And the boy will live. Is it justice? No. Justice is dead. It is buried. This is mercy. This is love. This is the only thing we have left.

We stay on the floor until morning. The fire dies. The room gets cold. We wrap ourselves in blankets. We sleep. I do not dream. I do not wake. I just wait.

When the sun rises, the light is grey. It filters through the curtains. It looks like dust. I stand up. My back aches. My face is swollen. Thomas is still sleeping. He looks peaceful. He looks like a child. I go to the desk. I open the drawer. The file is there. The blue folder. The name of the boy is on it. I take it. I walk to the fireplace. The coals are still warm. I drop the paper. It catches. The flame leaps up. It eats the ink. It eats the name. It eats the lie.

I watch it burn. I feel a weight lift off my chest. A heavy chain. A iron shackle. It falls away. I am free. I am free and I am damned. I am free and I am broken.

I turn around. Thomas is awake. He is watching me. He does not ask. He knows. He sees the ashes. He sees my face. He understands.

"Go," he says. "Before they come."

"I will go with you."

"No," he says. "I am staying. I am too tired to run. I am too tired to live. But you... you have time. You have life. You have a chance. Take it. Go. Save yourself. Save him. That is my order. That is my command."

"I am not leaving you."

"You are leaving me. You are leaving this place. You are leaving the law. You are leaving me. Go, John. Go and live. Be a man. Not a soldier. A man."

I look at him. I see the love in his eyes. It is fierce. It is violent. It is destructive. It burns me. It consumes me. It is the only fire that matters. I hug him. I hold him tight. I smell his hair. It smells of soap and sickness. It smells of home.

"I love you, Tom," I say.

"I know," he says. "I know."

I walk to the door. I open it. The cold air hits me. The snow is falling. It is silent. It is white. It is beautiful. It is indifferent. It does not care about the boy. It does not care about us. It just falls.

I step outside. I close the door. The latch clicks. It is a small sound. But it is final. I am outside. I am alone. The world is vast. It is empty. It is full of snow. I begin to walk. I do not know where I am going. I do not know if I will be caught. I do not know if I will be forgiven. I do not know if I am a hero or a villain. I do not know anything.

I only know that I am alive. I only know that the boy is alive. I only know that my brother is gone. I walk into the white. I walk into the silence. I walk into the unknown. The snow covers my footprints. It covers my path. It erases me. I am no one. I am nothing. I am free.

The wind blows. It howls. It screams. But I do not hear it. I hear only my own heart. It beats. It beats. It beats. It is the only machine that works. It is the only machine that matters. It keeps time. It keeps rhythm. It keeps me alive. I walk. I walk. I walk.
