The Faded Root

The watch is broken. The face is cracked down the center, a jagged scar running from the twelve to the six. It is a standard-issue tactical chronometer, matte black, scuffed at the edges. You hold it in your palm. It feels dead. The glass is cold. The hands are frozen at 4:12. You do not know what time it is. You do not care. The room smells of ozone and floor wax. It is the atrium of the Ministry. The ceiling is too high. The light is sterile. It hums.

You are a Lieutenant. Your uniform is pressed. The fabric is stiff. It bites into your shoulders. You are standing in line. There are others. They are silent. They stand still. Their hands are at their sides. They look at the floor. They look at the wall. They do not look at you. You are waiting for the Director. His name is Vance. He is a tall man. He wears a suit that costs more than your yearly salary. He moves with the grace of a predator. He is calm. He is always calm.

The door opens. Vance enters. He does not run. He walks. His shoes click on the marble. He stops in front of you. He looks at your face. He looks at your hands. He sees the watch.

"Explain," he says.

His voice is soft. It is like dry leaves.

"I found it," you say.

"Found it where?"

"On the ground."

"Whose watch?"

"I do not know."

Vance tilts his head. He smiles. It is a thin smile. It does not reach his eyes.

"Everything has an owner, Lieutenant. Everything belongs to someone. You know this. You are trained to know this. To track. To trace. To find."

"Yes, sir."

"Then who is it?"

You look at the watch. The crack in the glass looks like a river on a map. It looks like a fracture in the earth. You feel a pull. It is not a thought. It is a sensation. It is in your bones. It is in your blood. The watch is heavy. It is pulling you down.

"It is mine," you say.

Vance laughs. It is a short sound. It is dry.

"It is not yours. It is property of the State. You have misappropriated state property. You have damaged state property. You are under arrest."

Two guards step forward. They are large. They move fast. They grab your arms. They twist them behind your back. The metal of the watch presses against your skin. It is cold. It is sharp.

"I did not steal it," you say.

"You claimed it," Vance says. "That is theft. That is fraud. That is a crime against order."

They drag you. Your feet slide on the marble. The floor is smooth. It is hard. You feel the roughness of the watch face against your chest. It scrapes your skin. It stings.

They take you to a cell. It is small. It is dark. The air is thin. There is a bench. It is made of stone. You sit. You breathe. You count your breaths. One. Two. Three. The silence is loud. It presses against your eardrums.

Hours pass. Or days. You do not know. The light comes and goes. The shadows lengthen. They shorten. You watch the watch. It is in your pocket. You touch it. The crack is rough. It is jagged. It cuts your finger. You do not pull away. The pain is real. The pain is clear. It anchors you.

Vance comes to the cell. He is alone. He stands in the doorway. The light from the corridor cuts his face in half. One side is bright. One side is dark.

"You are persistent," he says.

"I am honest," you say.

"Honesty is a luxury. Order is a necessity. You understand this. You were built for this. Your body is a tool. Your mind is a mechanism. You do not have the right to feel. You do not have the right to claim."

"I felt it," you say.

"You felt nothing. You reacted. That is all. A reflex. A glitch. We will fix the glitch. We will remove the part that is broken."

He leaves. The door slams. The sound echoes. It bounces off the walls. It gets smaller. It fades.

You take out the watch. You hold it up to the dim light. The numbers are faded. The paint is chipped. You see your own reflection in the cracked glass. Your face is distorted. Your eyes are wide. Your mouth is tight. You look like a stranger. You look like a machine.

You remember the day you found it. It was in the park. It was raining. The ground was soft. You were on patrol. You saw the watch. It was half-buried in the mud. It was clean. It was pristine. You picked it up. It felt warm. It felt alive. You knew it was yours. You knew it had been waiting for you. You had lost it before. You had lost it in a dream. You had lost it in a life you did not live.

You put the watch in your mouth. You bite down on it. The metal is hard. The glass is sharp. You feel it cut your lip. Blood mixes with saliva. It tastes like iron. It tastes like rust. It tastes like time.

They bring you to a room. It is white. It is bright. There are chairs. There are wires. There is a machine. It is large. It is black. It hums. It vibrates.

Vance sits in the chair. He is relaxed. He folds his hands. He looks at you.

"We are going to fix you," he says.

"You cannot," you say.

"We can do anything. We have the technology. We have the power. We have the truth. The truth is simple. The truth is clear. There is good. There is bad. There is order. There is chaos. You are chaos. We are order. We will remove the chaos. We will keep the order."

They strap you to the chair. The straps are tight. They dig into your wrists. They dig into your ankles. You cannot move. You can only breathe. You can only watch.

They put the device on your head. It is cold. It is heavy. It presses against your temples. It presses against your forehead.

"Relax," Vance says. "Let go. Let the noise go. Let the feeling go. Let the self go."

You close your eyes. You feel the machine start. It is a low hum. It grows louder. It grows stronger. It vibrates in your teeth. It vibrates in your skull.

You feel a pain. It is not a physical pain. It is a spiritual pain. It is a tearing. It is a ripping. Something is being pulled from you. It is your memory. It is your name. It is your face.

You fight it. You hold on. You hold on to the watch. You hold on to the crack. You hold on to the blood.

"Stop," you say.

"Quiet," Vance says.

The machine gets louder. It is a roar. It is a scream. It is the sound of the world ending.

You see a flash. You see a field. It is green. It is wide. You are running. You are free. You are holding the watch. The watch is whole. The watch is glowing. It is bright. It is beautiful.

Then the flash is gone. The room is white. The machine is humming. You are alone.

Vance is watching you. He is smiling. He looks satisfied.

"Is it done?" he asks.

"Yes," you say.

Your voice is flat. It is empty. It is a recording.

"Good," Vance says. "You are fixed. You are clean. You are part of the system. You are safe."

They unstrap you. You stand. Your legs are weak. You sway. You steady yourself. You look at your hands. They are still. They are empty.

You reach into your pocket. You pull out the watch. It is broken. It is cracked. It is dead.

You look at Vance. You look at the guards. You look at the room. You see nothing. You see everything. You see the lines. You see the boxes. You see the grid.

You put the watch on the table. You let go of it. It falls. It hits the metal surface. It makes a small sound. It is a click. It is a stop.

You turn away. You walk to the door. You walk out. You do not look back.

You walk through the corridors. The lights are bright. The floors are clean. The air is sterile. You walk. You breathe. You are empty. You are full. You are nothing. You are everything.

You walk into the street. It is day. The sun is out. The light is harsh. The people are moving. They are fast. They are silent. They are uniform.

You stop. You stand in the middle of the road. Cars slow down. Horns honk. People shout. You do not hear. You do not see. You feel the sun on your skin. It is warm. It is real.

You look at your hands. They are empty. They are free.

You feel a tear in your eye. It is hot. It is heavy. It falls. It hits the pavement. It disappears.

You continue to walk. You walk into the crowd. You disappear. You are gone. You are here. You are the crack in the glass. You are the silence in the room. You are the watch that stopped at 4:12.

The city moves. The city breathes. The city turns.

You are part of it. You are part of the machine. You are the gear that fits. You are the piece that locks.

You are safe.

You are broken.

You are whole.

The watch is on the table. The crack is wide. The glass is gone. The hands are frozen. The time is lost. The time is found.

The Director looks at the empty chair. He looks at the watch. He picks it up. He holds it. It is light. It is dead. He puts it in his pocket. He walks away.

The room is empty. The light is bright. The air is still.

Nothing changes.

Everything changes.

The end is the beginning. The beginning is the end. The circle is closed. The circle is open.

You are nothing.

You are everything.

The watch is broken.

You are whole.
