The Faded Root

The gate closed. Iron teeth clicking shut. Darkness swallowed the stone corridor. He stood alone. The air was cold. It bit. It froze the breath in his lungs. He did not shiver. Shivering was for the weak. He was not weak. He was a sinner. Sins had weight. The weight was his armor.

He walked. The path was narrow. Stones under his boots. They were smooth. Worn by feet like his. Feet that had walked this path before. He knew this. He had always known. The knowledge was a stone in his pocket. Heavy. Cold.

The light came. Not a sun. A glow. Amber. Thick. It hung in the center of the cave. It did not move. It did not flicker. It was eternal. It was a root. A pale, white root, exposed from the earth. It pulsed. A slow rhythm. One. Two. One. Two.

He stared. The root stared back. It was him. It was not him. It was the shape of his guilt. The exact curvature of his spine. The hollow of his eyes. He reached out. His hand trembled. The air resisted. A wall of invisible force. He pushed. The force pushed back. Stronger. He pushed until his knuckles whitened. Until the bone cracked. He did not care. Pain was proof. Proof of existence. Proof of the self.

He must break it. The root. The cycle. The wheel. He would stop it. He would crush the seed. He would end the turn.

The voice came. Not from outside. From within. A whisper. Dry as ash.

You are the prisoner. You are the warden.

He ignored it. He pulled a knife from his belt. The blade was dull. Rusty. He had carried it for centuries. Or days. Time was a loop here. The blade bit into the air. It found no resistance. It found only his own reflection in the amber light.

He swung. The blade cut the light. The light did not break. It flowed around the steel. Like water. Like blood. He swung again. And again. The air grew thick. Choking. The root pulsed faster. One. Two. Three.

He was not fighting a root. He was fighting a mirror. The mirror showed a man. A man with his face. But the man in the mirror smiled. A sad smile. A knowing smile. The man raised a hand. A gesture of peace. Of surrender.

He screamed. The sound died in the throat. The cave was soundless. He swung the knife at the mirror. The glass did not shatter. It rippled. The image distorted. The man in the mirror became a child. Then an old man. Then a skeleton. Then a root.

The root.

He stopped. His arm hung heavy. The knife dripped with nothing. There was no blood. There is never blood here. Only the illusion of violence. Only the performance of struggle.

He looked at his hands. They were not hands. They were branches. Twisted. Knotted. Brown. He looked at his feet. Roots. Digging into the stone floor. He was part of the landscape. He was the soil. He was the decay.

The realization was a cold spike. It drove through the heart. He had not been trapped. He had been growing. The prison was the garden. The walls were the bark. The darkness was the night soil. He was not a visitor. He was the tree.

The root in the center of the cave was his other half. His twin. The part of him that remained when the leaves fell. The part that stayed when the storm passed. He had tried to kill it. He had tried to cut his own source.

The cycle was not a punishment. It was a biology.

He looked at the amber glow. It was beautiful. It was terrible. It was his own blood, turned to light. He had bled for so long that the cave was filled with it. And he had called it a prison.

He dropped the knife. It landed on the stone. A soft thud. The sound was small. Insignificant.

The root pulsed. One. Two. One. Two.

He felt the pull. Not a force. A gravity. A homecoming. He was tired. The fight was a habit. A reflex. Like blinking. Like breathing. He could stop blinking. He could stop breathing.

He walked to the root. The air did not resist. The invisible wall was gone. It had never been there. It was only his belief in the wall. The wall was his fear. The fear of connection. The fear of being part of something larger than his own ego.

He touched the root.

The touch was warm. It was the warmth of the sun. The warmth of a mother’s hand. The warmth of life before the fall.

He closed his eyes.

The memory came. Not a memory of this place. A memory of the world above. A garden. A woman. Her name was Eleanor. She had stood by a white rose. She had looked at him. Her eyes were deep. Dark. She had said nothing. She had only looked. The look was enough. It contained everything. The love. The loss. The understanding.

She had been the anchor. The point of no return. When she died, the loop began. He tried to escape. He tried to run. But he could not run from the love. He could not run from the grief. So he became the grief. He became the stone. He became the root.

He had mistaken his pain for his identity. He had thought the wound was the whole body.

The root pulsed. One. Two. One. Two.

He felt the branches of his arms reach out. They touched the ceiling of the cave. They wrapped around the stone. He was spreading. He was growing. He was no longer a man. He was a system. A network. A web of life and death.

He could feel the others. The other sinners. The other prisoners. They were all roots. They were all trees. They were a forest in the dark. They did not speak. They did not fight. They just grew. They intertwined. They supported each other.

He had been alone. He had thought he was unique. He had thought his sin was special. His pain was singular.

It was not.

The cycle was not a wheel. It was a spiral. It went down. And it went up. It went out. And it went in. It was the breath of the earth.

He let go.

The struggle ended. The knife lay on the floor. A useless tool. A relic of a war that never existed.

The amber light brightened. It washed over him. It washed over the stone. It washed over the other roots in the dark. They glowed. A soft, pulsing glow. A heartbeat.

He was not free. Freedom was a lie. There is no outside. There is no escape. There is only the here. The now. The root.

He was at peace.

The peace was not happiness. It was not joy. It was acceptance. The acceptance of the finite. The acceptance of the decay. The acceptance of the return.

He was the root. He was the soil. He was the tree. He was the wind. He was the rain.

He was everything.

The cave was silent. The silence was loud. It was a song. A low, humming song. The song of the earth. The song of time.

He closed his eyes. He opened them. The root was still there. It had not changed. It was eternal. It was constant.

He was still there. He had not changed. He was eternal. He was constant.

The loop closed. The loop opened.

One. Two. One. Two.

He breathed in. The air was sweet. It tasted of rain. It tasted of earth. It tasted of Eleanor.

He breathed out. The air was cold. It tasted of stone. It tasted of time.

He was here.

He was always here.

The light pulsed.

The root held.

The story ended.

The story began.

The gate opened. Iron teeth clicking open. Light spilled in. White. Blinding. It was the sun. It was the world.

He stood in the corridor. He was a man. He had a body. He had a face. He had a name. Thomas.

He walked. The path was wide. Grass under his feet. Soft. Green. He did not know the way. He did not need to know the way. The path was under his feet. The path was his life.

He looked at the sky. It was blue. Endless. He felt small. He felt large. He felt both.

He remembered the cave. He remembered the root. He remembered the peace.

He carried it. The peace was a stone in his pocket. Heavy. Cold.

He walked forward. He did not look back. There was nothing to look back at. The past was a root. It was in the ground. It held him. It fed him.

He was not a prisoner. He was a gardener.

He tended the soil. He watered the seeds. He let the weeds grow. He let the flowers bloom.

He did not fight the cycle. He rode it. He surfed the wave.

The sun set. The stars came out. The stars were roots in the sky. They pulsed. One. Two. One. Two.

He slept. The dream was the cave. The dream was the light. The dream was the root.

He woke. The sun rose. The cycle turned.

He was here.

He was always here.
