The Distant Threshold

The rain fell on the moor. It was a cold, gray sheet. I walked through it. My boots were heavy. They were wet leather. They smelled of mud and salt. I had come a long way. I was far from home. I was far from everything I knew. I was an exile. I was a ghost. I carried a map. It was old. The paper was thin. It was soft from handling. The lines were faded. They were black ink. They had bled into the fiber. I looked at it often. I looked for the threshold. I knew it was there. I felt it in my bones. It was a place of ending. It was a place of beginning. I did not know which. I only knew I had to find it.

I met a man. He was old. He stood by a stone. The stone was large. It was covered in moss. The moss was green. It was bright. It was alive. The man was dead. Or so it seemed. His eyes were closed. His face was still. He held a staff. The staff was wood. It was twisted. It was worn. I stopped. I stood before him. I did not fear him. I felt a kinship. I felt a pull. I knelt down. I brushed the moss from his eye. He opened it. It was clear. It was blue. It was like the sky before the storm.

"Who are you?" I asked. My voice was rough. It was dry.

"I am the Guide," he said. His voice was low. It was smooth. It was like gravel under water. "I am the Keeper of the Way."

"I am lost," I said. "I am tired. I am old. I want to stop. I want to rest. I want to die."

"You cannot die here," he said. "Not yet. You must cross. You must walk the path. It is short. It is long. It is hard. It is easy. It is all of it."

"Where is the threshold?" I asked.

"You are looking for a door," he said. "You are looking for a wall. You are looking for a line. There is no line. There is only the step. There is only the breath. There is only the choice."

"I do not understand," I said.

"You do not need to understand. You need to walk. Walk with me. Follow the stones. The stones remember. The stones know. The stones do not lie."

I stood up. My knees ached. My back ached. I picked up my bag. It was light. It was empty. I had given away my things. I had given them to the wind. I had given them to the river. I had nothing left. I was free. I was bound. I walked behind him. He did not look back. He did not speak. He just walked. He moved like water. He moved like smoke. I followed.

The path was narrow. It was steep. The rocks were slick. I slipped. I fell. I hit the ground. The pain was sharp. It was hot. I gasped. I lay there. I looked up. The sky was dark. The clouds were low. They pressed down on me. They pressed down on the world. The Guide stood above me. He did not help me up. He did not look down. He waited. I waited. I felt the anger. It rose in me. It was a flame. It was a fire. I wanted to strike him. I wanted to kill him. I wanted to break his staff. I wanted to tear his face. But I could not move. I was weak. I was small. I was dust.

I stood up. I wiped the blood from my lip. It was red. It was bright. I tasted it. It was iron. It was salt. I looked at the Guide. He was looking at me. He was smiling. It was a small smile. It was sad. It was kind.

"Did you feel it?" he asked.

"What?" I said.

"The weight," he said. "The burden. The sin. The mistake. You carried it for years. You carried it for a lifetime. You thought it was yours. You thought you made it. You thought you were the cause. You were not. You were the vessel. You were the tool. You were the mistake."

"I know what I did," I said. "I know what I broke. I know what I lost. I cannot undo it. I cannot fix it. I cannot go back. I am guilty. I am the villain. I am the monster."

"Who told you that?" he asked.

"Everyone," I said. "The law. The court. The neighbors. The family. They all said it. They all pointed. They all screamed. I am the bad one. I am the thief. I am the liar. I am the coward."

"Are you?" he asked.

"I don't know," I said. "I don't care. It is true. It is the truth. The truth is a rock. It is heavy. It is cold. It is here."

"The truth is a mirror," he said. "It shows you what you are. It shows you what you want to be. It shows you what you fear. It shows you what you love. It is not a judge. It is a witness. It does not condemn. It only reflects. You are looking at the reflection. You are seeing the face. You are missing the eyes. You are missing the soul. You are missing the heart."

"I have no heart," I said. "I left it behind. I left it in the house. I left it with her. I left it with the child. I left it with the memory. I have only this. I have only the skin. I have only the breath. I have only the walk."

"Then you are ready," he said. "To walk is to live. To walk is to choose. To walk is to forgive. To walk is to let go. To walk is to release. To walk is to be free."

We walked on. The rain stopped. The clouds broke. The sun came out. It was weak. It was pale. It was like a ghost. It touched the ground. It touched the grass. It touched us. I felt warmth. It was strange. It was new. I had forgotten warmth. I had forgotten light. I had forgotten hope. I had forgotten joy.

We reached the top of the hill. The view was vast. The land stretched out. It was green. It was gold. It was blue. The sea was there. It was far away. It was close. It was infinite. It was still. It was moving. It was breathing. I looked at it. I felt a pull. It was a tugging. It was a calling. It was a voice. It was a song. It was a memory. It was a dream.

"This is it," I said. "The threshold. The edge. The end."

"Yes," he said. "And the beginning."

"What do I do?" I asked. "Do I jump? Do I die? Do I sink? Do I float? Do I vanish? Do I appear?"

"You do nothing," he said. "You are nothing. You are everything. You are the space. You are the silence. You are the pause. You are the breath between the words. You are the note after the song. You are the light after the dark. You are the dawn after the night. You are the life after the death. You are the love after the loss. You are the friend after the foe. You are the self after the other."

"I don't understand," I said.

"You do," he said. "You always did. You just forgot. You were afraid. You were proud. You were angry. You were sad. You were alone. You are not alone. You never were. You were always with him. You were always with the Guide. You were always with the Truth. You were always with the Light. You were always with the Love."

"Who is he?" I asked.

"Who is he?" he asked.

"The one I lost. The one I hurt. The one I betrayed. The one I killed."

"Who?" he asked.

"Myself," I said.

The Guide smiled. It was wide. It was bright. It was full. It was real.

"Yes," he said. "That is the one. That is the friend. That is the lover. That is the self. That is the soul. That is the truth. That is the life. That is the all."

I looked at him. I saw his face. It was my face. It was old. It was young. It was dead. It was alive. It was me. It was him. It was us. It was one. It was all. It was nothing.

I felt a tear fall. It was hot. It was clean. It was pure. It was mine. I felt a laugh rise. It was small. It was soft. It was sweet. It was mine. I felt a breath. It was deep. It was long. It was full. It was mine. I felt a step. It was light. It was sure. It was free. It was mine.

I walked forward. I walked into the light. I walked into the sea. I walked into the sky. I walked into the earth. I walked into the wind. I walked into the rain. I walked into the sun. I walked into the dark. I walked into the dawn. I walked into the dusk. I walked into the night. I walked into the day. I walked into the life. I walked into the death. I walked into the love. I walked into the loss. I walked into the self. I walked into the other. I walked into the one. I walked into the all. I walked into the nothing.

I was gone. I was here. I was there. I was everywhere. I was nowhere. I was free. I was bound. I was lost. I was found. I was old. I was young. I was dead. I was alive. I was guilty. I was innocent. I was the villain. I was the hero. I was the mistake. I was the truth. I was the weight. I was the light. I was the burden. I was the gift. I was the sin. I was the grace. I was the fear. I was the hope. I was the anger. I was the peace. I was the sadness. I was the joy. I was the alone. I was the together. I was the self. I was the other. I was the one. I was the all.

The rain started again. It was gentle. It was soft. It was kind. It was warm. It was life. It was water. It was blood. It was tears. It was sweat. It was sweat. It was breath. It was voice. It was song. It was dance. It was motion. It was stillness. It was time. It was eternity. It was now. It is now. It was me. It is me.

I am here. I am walking. I am breathing. I am living. I am loving. I am letting go. I am letting be. I am letting go. I am letting be. I am letting go. I am letting be. I am letting go. I am letting be.

The threshold is not a door. The threshold is a step. The threshold is a breath. The threshold is a choice. The threshold is a love. The threshold is a life. The threshold is a self. The threshold is an other. The threshold is a one. The threshold is an all. The threshold is a nothing. The threshold is an everything. The threshold is a here. The threshold is a now. The threshold is a me. The threshold is a you. The threshold is a we. The threshold is a they. The threshold is a it. The threshold is a is. The threshold is a was. The threshold is a will. The threshold is a can. The threshold is a shall. The threshold is a may. The threshold is a must. The threshold is a need. The threshold is a want. The threshold is a hope. The threshold is a dream. The threshold is a wish. The threshold is a prayer. The threshold is a song. The threshold is a dance. The threshold is a life. The threshold is a death. The threshold is a love. The threshold is a loss. The threshold is a self. The threshold is an other. The threshold is a one. The threshold is an all. The threshold is a nothing. The threshold is an everything.

I am here. I am walking. I am breathing. I am living. I am loving. I am letting go. I am letting be.
