The Pale Path
The iron breaks.
It snaps with a sound like a bone giving way in a deep winter. You hold the handle in your right hand. The head flies off. It spins. It hits the mud. You do not move. Your arm is numb. The cold is in the marrow.
You are on the road. The road is long. The road is gray. You carry the handle. You carry the weight.
Who are you? You are Elara. You are the daughter of the miller. You are the one who promised.
The village is behind you. The smoke rises. The people watch. They do not help. They do not speak. They look at the mud. They look at the sky. They look away.
You walk. Your boots are wet. The mud pulls at your heels. It is hard to pull free. You pull. You walk.
The handle is heavy. It is not just iron. It is a promise. It is a curse. You hold it tight. Your knuckles are white. Your hands shake.
"Keep walking," you say.
Your voice is small. It is lost in the wind.
"Keep walking, Elara."
The wind answers. It is cold. It cuts through your cloak. It smells of rain. It smells of death.
You see a figure in the distance. It is white. It is standing in the field. It is watching.
"Is that you, Thomas?" you ask.
The figure does not move.
"Thomas," you say again. "Come here."
The figure tilts its head. It does not come. It does not speak. It is a statue. It is a ghost.
You walk faster. The handle clatters against your leg. Clack. Clack. Clack.
"You are not dead," you say to the air. "You are not a ghost. You are a man. And you are a coward."
The wind howls. The trees bend. The branches scratch the sky.
You reach the bridge. The bridge is old. The stones are mossy. The water below is black. It moves slowly. It moves like oil.
You stop. You look down.
There is something in the water.
It is a face.
It is your face.
But it is wrong. The eyes are wide. The mouth is open. It is screaming. But there is no sound.
You look at the handle in your hand. You look at the face in the water.
"Look at me," you say to the water.
The face does not look back.
You lower the handle. You drop it.
It falls. It hits the water. There is no splash. It sinks. It disappears.
You are empty. Your hand is empty.
The wind stops. The trees are still.
You are alone.
Who did you do this for?
You did it for love.
You did it for the cause.
You did it for the light.
But the light is gone.
You look at your hands. They are clean. They are pale. They are nothing.
You turn around. You look at the field.
The figure is gone.
You look at the village.
The smoke is gone.
The people are gone.
The road is empty.
You are on the road.
You are alone.
You walk.
You walk.
You walk.
The road is long.
The road is gray.
You carry nothing.
You are nothing.
But you are here.
The sun comes out.
It is pale.
It is cold.
It shines on the mud.
It shines on you.
You are small.
You are bright.
You are a speck.
You are a star.
You walk.
The end is not a door.
The end is a road.
You walk.
***
The iron broke.
It happened in the square. The sun was high. The air was thick with the smell of roasting meat and fear. You stood before the magistrate. He sat on the bench. He wore black. He looked at you with pity. He looked at you with disgust.
"Elara," he said.
"Sir," you said.
"You have struck your father."
"I have defended my honor," you said.
"Your honor?" He laughed. It was a dry sound. Like leaves skittering on stone. "A woman has no honor. A woman has duty. You have failed your duty."
"I have kept my word," you said.
"Your word is worth nothing. The law is the law."
He raised his hand. The guards moved. They took you by the arms. They pulled you away. You did not fight. You did not cry. You walked.
They put you in the cell. The cell was dark. The cell was wet. The rats scurried in the corners. You sat on the floor. You held the handle of the hammer in your lap.
The hammer was the only thing you had left.
The next day, they brought you out.
"Tomorrow," the magistrate said. "You will walk the Pale Path. You will carry the iron. If you reach the other side, you may live. If you fall, you die."
You looked at him. "Why?"
"Because you are a monster. And monsters must be tested."
You looked at the guards. They looked at the floor.
You looked at the crowd. They watched. They whispered. They pointed.
You saw Thomas. He was in the front row. He looked at you. His eyes were wet. He did not move. He did not speak.
You looked away.
They gave you the hammer. It was heavy. It was cold.
They pointed to the road. The road led to the forest. The forest was dark. The forest was deep.
"Go," they said.
You walked.
The crowd followed. They stayed at the edge. They watched. They bet.
You walked for an hour. The road got steeper. The trees got closer. The light got dimmer.
You heard voices.
"Keep going, Elara."
"You are strong."
"You are weak."
"You are a liar."
You did not stop. You walked.
The iron was heavy. It pulled at your arm. Your arm screamed.
You saw the figure again.
It was Thomas.
He was walking beside you.
"Thomas?" you asked.
He did not answer.
"Thomas, why are you here?"
He looked at you. His face was blank.
"Because I loved you," he said.
You stopped.
"Loved me?"
"Yes. I loved you. I loved the idea of you. I loved the cause. But I could not live with the truth."
"What truth?"
"That you were right."
You looked at him. "I was right?"
"Yes. The law is a lie. The power is a lie. You saw it. I did not."
He reached out. He took the hammer from your hand.
"Let me carry it," he said.
You looked at the hammer. You looked at him.
"No," you said.
"You must go," he said. "I will carry the weight. You can be free."
"You cannot save me," you said. "No one can save me."
"I can take the pain," he said.
You looked at him. You saw the truth in his eyes. He was not trying to save you. He was trying to escape. He was trying to wash his hands of the blood.
You took the hammer back.
"Walk away," you said.
He looked at you. He looked at the hammer. He looked at the road.
He turned. He walked. He disappeared into the trees.
You were alone.
The road was dark. The trees were tall. The wind was cold.
You held the hammer.
You thought of the light. You thought of the promise. You thought of the love.
It was all a lie.
The love was a cage. The cause was a chain. The light was a shadow.
You looked at the hammer.
It was not iron. It was bone. It was skin. It was flesh.
You looked at your hands.
They were not yours.
They were the hands of the magistrate. They were the hands of the guards. They were the hands of the crowd.
You were not Elara.
You were the system.
You were the law.
You were the beast.
You dropped the hammer.
It did not fall. It rose. It floated in the air. It glowed. It was white.
It was beautiful.
It was terrible.
You reached out. You touched it.
It was warm.
It was soft.
It was home.
You closed your eyes.
You felt the pain leave you.
You felt the weight lift.
You felt the love burn.
You opened your eyes.
The road was gone.
The trees were gone.
The sky was gone.
You were in a field.
The field was white. The grass was white. The sky was white.
You were alone.
You were free.
You walked.
You walked into the white.
You did not look back.
You did not look down.
You walked.
The end is not a door.
The end is a road.
You walk.
You are the light.
You are the dark.
You are the truth.
You are the lie.
You walk.
The iron is gone.
The pain is gone.
The love is gone.
You are here.
You are nothing.
You are everything.
You walk.
The white takes you.
The white is you.
You are the white.
You walk.
Forever.
Always.
Now.
