The Faded Root

The mist hangs low over the city of Orenthal. It is thick. It tastes of iron and old stone. You walk through it. Your boots crunch on the wet slate. The fog swallows the streetlamps one by one. You are looking for the Root.

You have been looking for three days. The Council of Elders gave you the task. They sat in their high chairs of black wood. Their faces were pale. They did not look at you. They looked through you. They spoke in low tones. They said the Root was rotting. They said the city was sick. They said you were the only one who could fix it. You nodded. You did not ask why. You are Margaret. You are the daughter of the Mayor. You are the one who keeps the records. You are the one who listens.

The city is ancient. The towers twist into the grey sky. They are made of bone-white stone. The people move like shadows. They do not speak. They keep their eyes down. They fear the Root. They say it feeds on their dreams. They say it steals their voices. You have heard the whispers. They say you are a monster. They say your mother was a monster. They say your blood is cursed. You let them say it. You walk on.

The fog is thicker now. You reach the square. The fountain is dry. The water has turned to black sludge. In the center of the square, the ground is cracked. A fissure runs through the stone. It is wide enough for a man to fall into. You kneel by the edge. You look down.

It is dark. It is deep. You see something moving. It is a tree. But it is not a tree. It is a mass of pale, twisting things. They look like fingers. They look like veins. They are tangled together. They pulse. A slow, wet rhythm. This is the Root. It is the heart of the city. It is the source of the fog. It is the source of the fear.

You have come to cut it. That is what the Council wants. They want you to take the knife. They want you to sever the main branch. They believe this will cure the sickness. They believe the city will breathe again. They believe you will be a hero. You reach into your bag. You take out the knife. It is small. It is sharp. It is made of steel. It glints in the dim light.

You hesitate. Your hand trembles. You look at the twisting mass. You feel a pull. It is not magic. It is not a spell. It is a feeling. It is a memory. You remember your mother. She died when you were young. She died in this square. They said she was trying to save the Root. They said she failed. They said she brought the curse. You do not remember her face. You only remember her voice. It was soft. It was sad. It said, "Do not let them define you."

You look at the Root again. The pale fingers reach up. They do not look like a monster. They look like a person. They look like a child. You see a face in the tangle. It is your mother. It is you. It is every woman who has ever been silenced. The Root is not a disease. The Root is the truth. The city is built on a lie. The fog is the breath of the suppressed. The fear is the cost of the silence.

You realize the Council is wrong. They do not want to save the city. They want to control it. They want the Root to remain weak. They want the people to remain afraid. They want you to be the instrument of their will. They misunderstand the nature of the thing. They see a problem. You see a person.

You lower the knife. You do not cut. You cannot cut. To cut would be to kill. To kill would be to let them win. They would rebuild the lie. They would bury the truth deeper. You must do something else. You must change the definition.

You stand up. You turn to the crowd. They are gathered at the edge of the square. They are silent. They are watching. They are waiting for you to strike. You step forward. You climb over the edge of the fissure. You descend into the dark. The air is cold. It is damp. It smells of earth and decay.

The pale fingers wrap around your ankles. They are soft. They are warm. You do not pull away. You let them hold you. You sit on the ground. You place your hands on the mass. You feel the pulse. It is fast. It is frantic. It is in pain. You close your eyes. You breathe. You match your breath to the pulse.

You begin to speak. You do not speak to the crowd. You speak to the Root. You tell it your name. You tell it your mother’s name. You tell it the names of the women who came before you. You tell it that it is not a curse. You tell it that it is a witness. You tell it that it is allowed to exist.

The fingers tighten. The pain is sharp. It is a burning in your chest. It is a tearing in your throat. You feel something moving. It is not blood. It is light. A faint, white light. It rises from your hands. It spreads through the tangle. The twisting things begin to straighten. They are no longer tangled. They are no longer twisted. They are becoming branches.

You feel your body changing. You feel your bones softening. You feel your skin becoming bark. You feel your hair becoming leaves. It is not death. It is transformation. You are becoming part of the Root. You are becoming the anchor. You are becoming the truth.

Above, the crowd gasps. The fog begins to lift. The black sludge in the fountain begins to clear. The stone towers gleam in the first light of dawn. The people look up. They see the light. They see the change. They do not understand. They are confused. They are afraid. But the fear is different now. It is not a fear of the monster. It is a fear of the unknown. It is a fear of the self.

You are no longer Margaret. You are the Root. You are the voice of the city. You are the silence that speaks. You are the truth that cannot be cut. The Council stands at the edge of the square. They look at you. They look at the light. They are angry. They are defeated. They wanted a victim. They got a martyr. They wanted a cure. They got a conscience.

You feel their hatred. It is cold. It is distant. It does not matter. You are deep in the earth. You are connected to everything. You feel the footsteps of the children. You feel the breath of the old men. You feel the joy of the lovers. You feel the sorrow of the widows. You are all of them. You are none of them. You are the space between.

The years pass. The city changes. The towers fall. The square is paved over. The people forget. They build new buildings. They tell new stories. They say the Root was a myth. They say the fog was just weather. They say the woman was a legend. They do not know the truth. They do not need to know the truth. The truth is in the ground. It is in the air. It is in the silence.

You wait. You do not sleep. You do not dream. You watch. You remember. You hold the memory of Margaret. You hold the memory of her mother. You hold the memory of the choice. You chose to be the foundation. You chose to be the sacrifice. You chose to be the definition.

One day, a child comes to the square. She is young. She is curious. She touches the stone. She feels a pulse. She looks into the fissure. She sees the light. She is not afraid. She smiles. She whispers a name. It is your name. It is her name. It is the name of the truth.

You answer. You do not speak with a voice. You speak with the wind. You speak with the rain. You speak with the growth of the vine that climbs the wall. You tell her that she is not alone. You tell her that the city is not sick. You tell her that the Root is alive. You tell her that she is free.

The child runs away. She runs to her mother. She tells her what she saw. Her mother laughs. She says it is a game. She says it is a dream. She does not believe. But the child remembers. The child keeps the memory. She passes it on. The truth is delayed. The truth is visible. The truth is the shadow you see in the mirror. The truth is the root that fades and grows. The truth is the choice that defines you.

You are the faded root. You are the hidden strength. You are the silent witness. You are the sacrifice that saves. You are the lie that becomes the truth. You are the city. You are the self. You are the choice. You are the end. You are the beginning.

The mist lifts. The sun rises. The city breathes. The Root pulses. You are there. You are always there. You are the anchor. You are the blood. You are the love that consumes. You are the love that frees. You are the definition. You are the self. You are the choice.
