The Distant Threshold

The dream is not a dream at all but a fever that has settled into the marrow of your bones, a sticky, golden syrup that coats the inside of your skull and makes every thought feel like it is being pulled through wet sand, and you are standing in the vast, echoing atrium of the old city hall, the place where the air always tastes of dust and old paper and the faint, metallic tang of fear, and you are wearing your best suit, the one that fits too tightly in the shoulders because you have not eaten properly in weeks, and you are looking up, always looking up, at the figure suspended in the center of the room, the Mayor, or the Judge, or the thing that wears the face of the Mayor, who is not a man but a geometry of shadow and authority, a towering silhouette that blocks out the light from the high windows and casts a square of darkness directly over you, and you know, with a certainty that bypasses logic and goes straight to the gut, that you have lost, that the case is closed, that the verdict was written before you ever opened your mouth, and the thing is speaking, but the words do not come out of its mouth, they vibrate in the air, a low, resonant hum that you feel in your teeth, and it is telling you that you are nothing, that your truth is a small, fragile thing that can be crushed between the thumb and forefinger of power, and you are trying to speak, to argue, to show them the file, the photograph, the witness statement, but your mouth is full of cotton, your tongue is a dead weight, and your hands are shaking so badly that you cannot hold the evidence, you cannot hold your own life together, and the shadows are moving, they are creeping up the walls, they are reaching for you, and you are running, or you are trying to run, but your legs are heavy, like they are filled with lead, and the floor is tilting, the world is spinning, and you are falling, falling into the dark, into the cold, into the place where the secrets go to die, and then you wake up, gasping, your sheets soaked with sweat, the morning light pale and gray through the curtains, and you are in your small apartment, the one with the leaking tap and the peeling wallpaper, and you are alone, you are so alone it hurts, and you know that the dream was not a dream, it was a message, a warning, a promise, and you know that you have to go back, you have to go to the office, you have to face the man who is eating the city alive, one by one, and you get up, and you wash your face, and you look at yourself in the mirror, and you do not recognize the eyes looking back at you, they are too hard, too cold, too far away, and you know that something has broken, something fundamental, and you cannot fix it, you can only move forward, you can only walk into the fire, and you dress, slowly, carefully, buttoning the shirt, tying the tie, putting on the shoes, and you take the file from the drawer, the one with the name of the woman who disappeared, the one everyone says is dead, the one who is not, and you go out into the city, into the morning, into the noise and the grime and the life, and you walk, and you think, and you remember, and you feel the weight of the past pressing down on you, the weight of the choices you made, the choices you didn't make, the ones you are about to make, and you know that you are not the same person you were yesterday, you are something new, something harder, something darker, and you are afraid, but you are also ready, and you keep walking, and the city grows around you, a maze of stone and steel and shadow, and you are the mouse in the maze, and you are the trap, and you are the hunter, and you do not know which one you are anymore, and you do not care, because you know that the truth is out there, hidden in the cracks, buried in the dust, waiting to be found, and you will find it, or you will die trying, and there is no middle ground, there is no compromise, there is only the choice, the choice that defines you, the choice that breaks you, the choice that makes you who you are, and you are making it, step by step, breath by breath, and you are not afraid, you are just sad, and the sadness is a heavy thing, a stone in your chest, and you carry it, and you walk, and the day begins, and the hunt begins, and the end is coming, and it is beautiful, and it is terrible, and it is yours.

The office is a cathedral of silence and glass, the kind of place where the air is filtered and the light is artificial and the people are polished, and you walk in, and they look at you, and they see the change, they see the hardness in your eyes, the tension in your jaw, and they back away, they give you space, they do not want to be near you, they do not want to be part of this, and you go to your desk, and you sit down, and you open the file, and you look at the picture of the woman, Sarah, or whatever her name is, the woman who was taken, the woman who is gone, and you touch the photo, and you remember your sister, your little sister, who was taken by the world, by the city, by the men like the Mayor, who are so big, so powerful, so untouchable, and you remember how you held her hand, how you promised to protect her, how you failed, how you let them take her, and you remember the face of the man who did it, the man who smiled, the man who said it was just business, the man who is now the Mayor, and you remember the day you met him, the day you shook his hand, the day you believed him, the day you became his friend, his ally, his weapon, and you remember the day you realized the truth, the day you saw the money, the day you saw the bodies, the day you knew you had to stop him, and you remember the fear, the cold, the dark, the feeling of being small, being powerless, being alone, and you remember the choice, the choice to stay silent, the choice to look away, the choice to save your own skin, and you remember how easy it was, how hard it was, how it cost you, how it cost you your soul, and you remember the night you made up your mind, the night you decided to fight, the night you decided to burn it all down, and you remember the dream, the dream of the shadow, the dream of the loss, the dream of the fall, and you know that it was a test, a trial, a preparation, and you know that you passed, you know that you are ready, and you pick up the phone, and you dial the number, the number you have memorized, the number you have been waiting to use, and you wait for it to ring, and you think about your sister, you think about her face, you think about her smile, you think about her voice, and you feel the love, the primal, instinctual love, the love that is beyond reason, beyond logic, beyond life, and you know that this is why you are doing it, this is why you are here, this is why you are willing to die, and the phone rings, and you pick it up, and you say his name, and you say, I know what you did, and you say, I am coming for you, and you hang up, and you stand up, and you take your coat, and you leave the office, and you walk out into the street, and you look up at the sky, and it is blue, it is clear, it is bright, and you breathe in the air, and it is clean, it is fresh, it is new, and you smile, and it is a sad smile, a broken smile, a final smile, and you walk away, and you do not look back, and you do not turn around, and you do not stop, and you go, and you go, and you go, and the city fades behind you, and the truth fades ahead of you, and the light fades around you, and the dark fades into you, and you are gone, and you are here, and you are everything, and you are nothing, and you are the threshold, and you are the door, and you are the key, and you are the lock, and you are the end, and you are
