The Golden Compass

The bell tolled. It was a heavy sound. It shook the dust from the rafters. It shook the soul of the prisoner.

"Thou hast failed," the King said. His voice was dry. Like parchment. Like old bones. "The rite is broken. The seal is cracked."

Silence filled the hall. The air was thick. It tasted of iron. It tasted of fear. Thomas knelt. His knees pressed into the cold stone. The stone bit. It did not care. He did not care. He was empty. He was a vessel. A broken vessel.

"Speak," the King commanded.

"I have no words, my liege."

"Then thou hast no breath. And without breath, there is no life. And without life, there is no penalty. Only dust. Only nothing."

The King stood. He was tall. He was shadowed. His crown caught the light. It was gold. It was bright. It was cold. He looked down. He looked at Thomas. He looked at the blood on the floor. The blood was dark. It was wet. It was still.

"Thou wert the chosen," the King said. "Thou wert the vessel. Now thou art the waste."

Thomas looked up. He saw the faces. The courtiers. They stood in rows. They were still. They were watching. They were judging. They were hungry. Their eyes were sharp. Their lips were thin. They wanted the blood. They wanted the end.

"I am sorry," Thomas whispered.

"It is too late for sorrow. Sorrow is a flower. It blooms in spring. This is winter. This is night. This is the end."

The King turned. He walked to the window. The window was high. The glass was thin. The moon was out. The moon was full. The moon was white. It hung in the sky. It hung like a plate. It hung like a mirror. It reflected the hall. It reflected the King. It reflected the blood.

"Look," the King said. He did not turn. "Look at the moon."

Thomas looked. He looked at the moon. He looked through the glass. The glass was cold. The glass was hard. The moon was far. The moon was silent. The moon was watching.

"It is beautiful," Thomas said.

"It is cruel," the King said. "It does not care. It does not feel. It only shines. It only burns. It only is. Like us. Like thee. Like the stone. Like the blood. We are all just light. And light fades. And then there is dark. And the dark is kind. The dark is rest. The dark is peace."

Thomas looked at the floor. The blood was spreading. It was moving. It was slow. It was creeping. It was reaching for his feet. It was reaching for his soul. He felt a pull. He felt a weight. He felt a cold. The cold was inside. The cold was deep. The cold was old.

"I do not feel peace," Thomas said.

"No," the King said. "Peace is for the dead. Thou art not dead. Thou art only lost. Thou art only broken. And broken things do not rest. They only hurt. They only ache. They only wait."

The King turned back. His face was pale. His face was hard. His face was stone. "Thou must go now. Thou must leave the court. Thou must leave the city. Thou must leave the world. Go to the edge. Go to the waste. Go to the place where no one goes. There, thou wilt find thy end. There, thou wilt find thy truth."

Thomas stood. His legs were weak. His legs were shaking. He looked at the King. He looked at the court. He looked at the blood. He looked at the moon.

"Where is the edge?" Thomas asked.

"There is no edge," the King said. "The world is round. There is no end. There is only more. More pain. More loss. More dark. Go. Walk. Walk until thy feet bleed. Walk until thy heart stops. Walk until thou art dust. Walk until thou art gone. Then, thou wilt be free."

Thomas walked. He walked out of the hall. He walked out of the castle. The air was cold. The air was sharp. The air was dead. He walked into the night. The night was black. The night was deep. The night was full. He walked on. He walked fast. He walked hard. He did not stop. He did not look back. He did not think. He did not feel. He only walked.

He walked for days. He walked for nights. The sun rose. The sun set. The moon rose. The moon set. The stars came out. The stars went out. The world turned. The world moved. The world changed. He did not change. He was the same. He was the stone. He was the blood. He was the dust.

He walked to the forest. The trees were tall. The trees were dark. The trees were silent. The branches reached out. The branches grasped. The branches held. He pushed through. He pushed hard. The thorns bit. The thorns cut. The blood flowed. The blood dripped. The blood fell. It fell on the leaves. It fell on the roots. It fell on the earth. The earth drank. The earth kept. The earth hid.

He walked to the river. The water was cold. The water was clear. The water was fast. The current pulled. The current dragged. The current tugged. He stepped in. The water rose. It rose to his waist. It rose to his chest. It rose to his mouth. He gasped. He choked. He sputtered. He tried to swim. He tried to float. He tried to breathe. But the water was heavy. The water was cold. The water was dark. It pulled him down. It pulled him deep. It pulled him under.

He sank. He sank slowly. He sank gently. He sank quietly. The bubbles rose. The bubbles popped. The bubbles faded. The light faded. The sound faded. The pain faded. The fear faded. The anger faded. The sorrow faded. Everything faded. Everything was gone. Everything was still.

He was in the dark. He was in the deep. He was in the water. He was in the cold. He was in the silence. He was in the peace. He was in the rest. He was in the end.

He opened his eyes. He was not dead. He was not gone. He was not free. He was alive. He was wet. He was cold. He was alone. He was on the bank. The grass was wet. The grass was green. The grass was soft. The sun was out. The sun was warm. The sun was bright. The birds were singing. The birds were happy. The world was alive. The world was loud. The world was full.

He looked at his hands. They were red. They were stained. The blood was dry. The blood was dark. The blood was part of him. It was not just on his skin. It was in his skin. It was in his bones. It was in his blood. It was in his soul.

He looked at the river. The river was clear. The river was fast. The river was gone. It had carried him. It had taken him. It had given him back. It had shown him. It had told him.

He looked at the sky. The sky was blue. The sky was vast. The sky was empty. The moon was gone. The sun was there. The sun was real. The sun was here. The sun was now.

He stood up. His legs were steady. His legs were strong. He took a step. He took another. He walked. He walked away from the river. He walked away from the forest. He walked away from the dark. He walked toward the light. He walked toward the world. He walked toward the people. He walked toward the life.

He did not stop. He did not look back. He did not think. He did not feel. He only walked. He walked with purpose. He walked with power. He walked with grace. He walked with truth.

The truth was this. He was not a vessel. He was not a broken thing. He was not waste. He was not dust. He was a man. He was a soul. He was a light. He was a fire. He was a spark. He was a seed. He was a beginning.

The King was wrong. The court was wrong. The world was wrong. They thought the end was death. They thought the end was dark. They thought the end was silence. But the end was not the end. The end was a door. The end was a gate. The end was a key.

Thomas walked on. He walked into the village. The villagers saw him. They saw his blood. They saw his clothes. They saw his face. They saw his eyes. They saw his soul. They did not fear him. They did not hate him. They did not judge him. They welcomed him. They held him. They fed him. They healed him. They loved him.

He was not alone. He was not lost. He was not broken. He was found. He was whole. He was home.

The sun set. The moon rose. The stars came out. The world turned. The world moved. The world changed. He changed with it. He grew with it. He lived with it. He loved it. He was it. He was the light. He was the fire. He was the spark. He was the seed. He was the beginning. And the beginning was endless. And the endless was alive. And the alive was free. And the free was true. And the true was golden. And the golden was his. And his was the world. And the world was his. And they were one. And one is all. And all is nothing. And nothing is everything. And everything is now. And now is always. And always is here. And here is home.
