The Pale Path
You stand at the edge of the wire. The air tastes like iron and old rain. It is cold here. Colder than it should be. You are a man. You are a badge. You are the law. But the law is broken. You know this now. You have always known it. You just could not say it out loud.
The man across from you is tall. He wears a suit that costs more than your yearly salary. His face is smooth. He looks bored. He looks at you the way a cat looks at a mouse. He does not fear you. He pities you. That is worse.
"Is this necessary?" he asks. His voice is soft. It is polite. It is the voice of men who own the ground you stand on.
You do not answer. You check your belt. Your gun is heavy. Your shield is heavier. It is scratched. It is dented. It is yours. It is your skin. You are not a person behind the shield. You are the shield. The shield is your body. The shield is your soul. You have worn it for twenty years. You have worn it until the metal bit into your flesh. You have worn it until you forgot what you looked like without it.
"Step back," he says. He smiles. It is a small smile. It does not reach his eyes. "There is no need for violence. We can talk. We can fix this. We can make it right."
You shake your head. No. There is no fixing it. There is only the wire. There is only the cold. There is only the truth. The truth is that the system is a lie. The truth is that you are a tool. The truth is that the tool is broken.
The crowd watches. They are far away. They are behind the fence. They are silent. They are watching you die. They do not care. They want to see the show. They want to see if the law works. They want to see if the monster can be stopped. You are the monster to them. You are the shield. You are the wall.
You look down at your boots. The mud is dark. The mud is deep. You sink in. You sink further. The earth takes you. The earth is soft. The earth is patient.
"I have a family," the man says. He takes a step forward. His shoes are clean. His shoes are dry. He does not sink. He floats. "I have children. They need me. If you shoot me, you destroy them. Is that what you want? To be a hero? To be a martyr? Or do you want to be a man?"
You feel a pain in your chest. It is not a heart attack. It is a memory. You remember your brother. He died in this town. He died because of a mistake. A mistake by the police. A mistake by the law. A mistake by the system. They buried him. They buried the truth. They buried your grief. You have carried it. You have carried it like a stone. You have carried it like a shield.
You look at the man. You see his eyes. They are empty. They are hollow. He is not a man. He is a position. He is a title. He is a name on a list. He is the enemy. But the enemy is not him. The enemy is the space between you. The enemy is the wire. The enemy is the rule.
"Last chance," he says. He raises his hands. They are open. They are empty. He has no weapon. He has no need for a weapon. He has the power. He has the money. He has the law. "Step aside. Let me go. And I will protect you. I will protect your family. I will protect your life. All you have to do is let go."
You look at your shield. The scratches are deep. The dents are sharp. The metal is cold. It is your friend. It is your enemy. It is your self. You have lived in it. You have died in it. You have become it.
You think of your sister. She is in the crowd. She is behind the fence. She is watching. She knows what you are going to do. She knows because you are one. She knows because you are the same. She knows because the system has eaten you. She knows because the system has eaten her. She knows because the system has eaten everyone.
You do not step aside. You do not step back. You stand still. You are still. You are stone. You are iron. You are the wall.
The man frowns. He does not understand. He expects you to hesitate. He expects you to fear. He expects you to be human. He does not understand that you are no longer human. You are the law. The law does not hesitate. The law does not fear. The law does not feel.
You take a step forward. The mud grips your boots. It pulls at you. It tries to stop you. You do not stop. You keep moving. You keep moving. You are moving. You are always moving. You are moving toward the end. You are moving toward the truth.
"I am not afraid," you say. Your voice is low. It is rough. It is like gravel. It is like wind.
The man laughs. It is a short laugh. It is a dry laugh. "Of course you aren't. You are a machine. You are a tool. You are nothing."
He is right. You are nothing. You are everything. You are the end.
You close your eyes. You breathe in. The air is cold. The air is sweet. The air is life. You breathe out. The air is warm. The air is wet. The air is death.
You open your eyes. The man is waiting. He is smiling. He is winning. He is always winning.
You raise your shield. You do not raise your gun. You do not need your gun. Your gun is a lie. Your shield is the truth. Your shield is your body. Your shield is your heart. Your shield is your soul.
You run.
The mud splashes. The mud flies. The mud covers you. The mud covers the man. The mud covers the world.
You do not see his face. You do not see his eyes. You do not see his mouth. You see only the blur. You see only the motion. You see only the impact.
The impact is loud. The impact is heavy. The impact is final.
You fall. You fall into the mud. You fall into the cold. You fall into the dark.
The shield is heavy. The shield is broken. The shield is gone.
You feel the pain. It is sharp. It is bright. It is real. It is the first real thing you have felt in years. It is the first real thing you have felt in your life.
You are on the ground. The ground is hard. The ground is cold. The ground is alive.
The man is on the ground. He is on his back. He is looking at the sky. The sky is gray. The sky is empty. The sky is vast.
He is breathing. He is gasping. He is alive. He is not dead. He is hurt. He is bleeding. The blood is red. The blood is warm. The blood is real.
You look at him. He looks at you. There is no hatred in his eyes. There is no fear in his eyes. There is only confusion. There is only pain. There is only life.
You realize it then. You realize the truth. The truth is not that you are the law. The truth is that you are a man. The truth is that he is a man. The truth is that you are the same. The truth is that the system is a cage. The truth is that the cage is broken. The truth is that you are free.
You are not the shield. You are not the wall. You are not the law. You are a man. You are a brother. You are a friend. You are a son. You are a father. You are a part of the world. You are a part of the life.
You look at your hands. They are covered in mud. They are covered in blood. They are covered in truth. They are your hands. They are real. They are yours.
The crowd is silent. The crowd is still. The crowd is waiting. They are waiting for the hero. They are waiting for the monster. They are waiting for the end.
But the end is not here. The end is there. The end is in the past. The end is in the memory. The end is in the lie.
You are here. You are now. You are real.
The man reaches out his hand. His hand is shaky. His hand is weak. His hand is human.
You look at his hand. You look at your hand. They are the same. They are different. They are connected. They are separate. They are one.
You do not take his hand. You do not reject his hand. You let it hang there. You let it be. You let it be what it is.
You lie in the mud. You lie in the cold. You lie in the truth.
The pain is fading. The pain is becoming something else. The pain is becoming peace. The pain is becoming rest. The pain is becoming home.
You close your eyes. You breathe. You breathe in. You breathe out. You breathe. You live.
The world is quiet. The world is still. The world is waiting.
You are not afraid. You are not angry. You are not sad. You are not happy. You are just. You are just a man. You are just a man in the mud. You are just a man in the cold. You are just a man in the truth.
And that is enough. That is more than enough. That is everything.
The rain begins to fall. It is soft. It is gentle. It is clean. It washes the mud from your face. It washes the blood from your hands. It washes the lie from your soul.
You open your eyes. The rain is falling. The rain is real. The rain is life.
You are alive. You are free. You are home.
The man is gone. The crowd is gone. The wire is gone. The shield is gone. The law is gone.
Only you remain. Only the mud remains. Only the rain remains. Only the truth remains.
And you are enough.
