The Pale Shadows

You hold the ring in your palm. It is cold. The metal is silver, tarnished to the color of a bruise. It is heavy. You feel its weight in your bones. It is not just a ring. It is a key. It is a chain. It is the only thing you have left of him. You do not look at it. You look at the floor. The floor is marble. It is white. It is cold.

"Is it true?"

The voice is soft. It is the voice of Elias. He stands by the window. The glass is fogged. Outside, the city screams. The factories roar. The smoke rises. It chokes the sky. The air is thick. It tastes of iron. It tastes of ash.

You do not answer. You turn the ring over. The inscription is worn. You cannot read it. You never could. Elias says he can. Elias says he knows. Elias is the scholar. Elias is the man who understands the old ways. Elias is the man who taught you how to see. You trusted him. You trusted him completely. You gave him your silence. You gave him your secrets. You gave him your heart.

"I have read the files," Elias says. He does not look at you. He looks at the smoke. "The Magistrate has made his decision."

Your hand trembles. You stop turning the ring. You place it on the table. It lands with a soft click. It is a small sound. It is a loud sound. It fills the room.

"What decision?" you ask. Your voice is thin. It is like paper. It is like dry leaves.

"They are taking it," he says. "The Guild. The Council. They want the artifact. They want the power. They say it is for the safety of the city. They say it is for order."

You laugh. It is a dry sound. It is a broken sound. "For order," you repeat. "They always say that."

Elias turns. He looks at you. His eyes are dark. They are deep. They are full of something. Is it pity? Is it fear? Is it guilt? You cannot tell. You do not want to know. You want to look away. You cannot. He is the only person in this room who knows the truth. Or so you thought.

"We must stop them," you say. "We must hide it. We must destroy it."

"You cannot destroy it," Elias says. His voice is firm. His voice is cold. "It is not just a ring, Margaret. It is a memory. It is a history. If you break it, you break the past. You break us."

"We are already broken," you say. "We are already gone."

He shakes his head. He steps closer. He steps into your space. You do not move. You are a statue. You are a stone. You are cold.

"I have made a choice," he says. "I have gone to the Council. I have spoken to them."

The room tilts. The floor moves. The air changes. You feel it in your chest. You feel it in your throat. You cannot breathe.

"You did what?" you whisper.

"I gave them the map," he says. "I told them where the vault is. I told them how to open it."

Silence. The smoke outside continues to rise. The factories continue to roar. The world continues to turn. But here, in this room, time has stopped. The dust motes hang in the air. They are frozen. They are suspended. They are waiting.

"Why?" you ask. The word is small. It is a seed. It grows. It expands. It fills the room. It crashes against the walls.

"Because I am tired," he says. "Because I am afraid. Because I loved you. And I loved you too much to let you destroy everything. I loved you too much to let you burn it all down. I had to save what was left. I had to save the city. I had to save myself."

You look at him. You look into his eyes. You look for the man you knew. You look for the friend. You look for the lover. You look for the scholar. You do not find him. You find a stranger. You find a coward. You find a traitor.

"You betrayed me," you say.

"I saved you," he says.

"You saved nothing. You saved yourself. You left me to die. You left me to be forgotten. You left me to be erased."

He flinches. He steps back. He hits the wall. He does not seem to care. He is distant. He is far away. He is gone.

"The Council comes in an hour," he says. "They will come for you. They will take the ring. They will take the knowledge. They will take the truth. And you will be nothing. You will be a shadow. You will be a ghost."

"Let them come," you say.

"You will fight them," he says. "You will resist. You will be defeated. You will be broken."

"I am already broken," you say.

He looks at the ring. He looks at you. He looks at the door. He is ready to leave. He is ready to run. He is ready to disappear.

"Margaret," he says. "I am sorry."

You do not answer. You do not want to hear him. You do not want to see him. You do not want to be here. You want to be gone. You want to be free. You want to be nothing.

He walks to the door. He opens it. The cold air rushes in. It bites your face. It bites your skin. It bites your soul.

He does not look back. He steps out. The door closes. The latch clicks. It is a final sound. It is a definitive sound. It is the sound of an ending.

You are alone.

You sit down. You are tired. Your body is heavy. Your mind is empty. You reach for the ring. You pick it up. You hold it again. It is cold. It is heavy. It is real.

You look at the window. The smoke is thicker. It is darker. It is black. It covers the sun. It covers the sky. It covers the world.

You stand up. You walk to the table. You open the drawer. You take out the knife. It is small. It is sharp. It is clean. You hold it in your hand. You feel the edge. It is smooth. It is cold. It is waiting.

You think of Elias. You think of his face. You think of his voice. You think of his betrayal. You think of his love. You think of your love. You think of the years. You think of the nights. You think of the days. You think of the promises. You think of the lies.

You realize you do not hate him. You do not want to hurt him. You do not want to kill him. You do not want to destroy him. You only want to be free. You only want to be yourself. You only want to be true.

The truth is in the ring. The truth is in the silver. The truth is in the memory. The truth is in the past. The past is a prison. The past is a cage. The past is a chain.

You must break the chain. You must break the ring. You must break the past.

You place the ring on the table. You raise the knife. Your hand is steady. Your heart is still. Your mind is clear.

You think of the city. You think of the people. You think of the factories. You think of the smoke. You think of the future. The future is blank. The future is white. The future is empty.

You swing the knife.

The blade hits the silver. It does not cut. It rings. The sound is high. The sound is pure. The sound is beautiful.

The ring does not break. It does not shatter. It does not fall apart. It remains whole. It remains strong. It remains true.

You stop. You lower the knife. You look at the ring. You look at your hands. You look at the door.

They are coming. You can hear them. The footsteps. The heavy boots. The clash of metal. The voice of the Magistrate.

You do not run. You do not hide. You sit down. You wait.

The door opens. Light floods in. It is bright. It is harsh. It is blinding.

You see the men. You see the Magistrate. You see Elias. He is behind them. He is pale. He is shaking. He is watching.

The Magistrate steps forward. He is tall. He is thin. He is cold. He looks at you. He looks at the ring.

"Give it to us," he says. His voice is loud. His voice is flat. His voice is dead.

You do not move. You do not speak. You look at the ring. You look at the light. You look at the shadow.

You realize you are not afraid. You realize you are not sad. You realize you are not angry. You are only tired. You are only done.

You pick up the ring. You hold it out. You offer it. You give it.

The Magistrate takes it. He holds it up. He looks at it. He smiles. It is a small smile. It is a cold smile. It is a hollow smile.

"Thank you," he says.

He turns. He walks away. The men follow. Elias stays. He looks at you. He does not say anything. He does not need to say anything.

You look at him. You see his face. You see his eyes. You see his fear. You see his regret. You see his love.

You do not hate him. You do not forgive him. You do not remember him.

You close your eyes. You breathe. You let the air fill your lungs. You let the air fill your soul. You let the air take you.

The room is quiet. The smoke is gone. The sun is out. The world is bright. The world is new. The world is yours.

You are free.

You are nothing.

You are everything.
