The Pale Tale

The rain hits the glass. It stutters. It stops. You sit in the chair. The wood creaks. It is a small office. The walls are thin. The air is cold. You are the investigator. You hold the object. It is a key. It is brass. It is old. It is worn. The edges are smooth. You turn it over. You look at the teeth. They are chipped. You know why. You have held it for years. You have turned it in your hand. You have polished it. You have lost sleep. You have lost weight. You have lost friends. You are alone now. The clock ticks. The rain returns.

You are not rich. You are poor. The rent is due. The landlord waits. He is a man of silence. He does not knock. He stands in the hall. You hear his breathing. It is shallow. It is fearful. You know he is afraid. You are afraid too. But you do not move. You look at the key. It is the only thing of value. It is the proof. It is the curse. You found it in the dirt. You dug it out. Your hands bled. You did not stop. You knew you had to find it. You knew it would destroy you. You kept digging.

A knock comes. It is not the landlord. It is softer. It is hesitant. You open the door. A woman stands there. She is small. She is gray. Her eyes are dark. They are deep. They are tired. She holds an umbrella. It is black. It is wet. Water drips from it. It pools on the floor. You look at her feet. They are bare. She is cold. You step aside. She enters. The door closes. The sound is heavy. It is final.

She sits. She does not speak. She looks at you. You look at her. She knows who you are. You know who she is. She is the ally. She has been watching. She has been waiting. She has no money. She has no power. She has only the truth. She places a paper on the table. It is thin. It is white. It is stained. You do not touch it. You look at her hands. They are trembling. They are old. They are strong.

"You found it," she says. Her voice is low. It is rough. It is like gravel. It is like stone.

"Yes," you say. You do not look at the paper. You look at the key. It rests in your palm. It is warm. It is alive. It is burning. You want to throw it. You want to break it. You want to run. You cannot move. You are frozen. You are bound.

"Who told you?" she asks.

"No one," you say. "I saw it. I felt it. It called to me." She smiles. It is not a happy smile. It is a sad smile. It is a pitying smile. She knows it is not true. You know it is not true. You lied. You wanted to be the hero. You wanted to be the one who knew. You wanted to be special. You were wrong. You are nothing. You are just a man. You are just poor. You are just tired.

She points to the paper. You lean forward. Your neck aches. Your back aches. Your soul aches. You read the words. They are small. They are clear. They are cold. They list the names. They list the dates. They list the deaths. You know the names. You have heard them. They are the missing. They are the poor. They are the forgotten. You have looked for them. You have searched the streets. You have searched the alleys. You have searched the graves. You have found nothing. You have found only silence. You have found only dirt.

"This is the map," she says. "The key opens the door. But the door leads nowhere. It leads to a cellar. The cellar is empty. There are no bodies. There are no secrets. There is only dust."

You stare at her. You do not believe her. You shake your head. Your hair falls over your eyes. You brush it away. Your hands are dirty. Your hands are stained. You look at the key again. It is still in your hand. It is still warm. It is still burning.

"No," you say. "There is more. I have felt it. The wind changed. The light changed. I heard a voice. It was her voice. She called me. She said I was the chosen one. I am the one who must end it."

She looks at you. Her eyes are wet. She does not cry. She does not beg. She waits. The rain hammers the glass. The glass shakes. The table shakes. The key shakes. You are shaking. You are falling apart. You are unraveling. You are a thread. You are a fraying rope.

"You are not chosen," she says. "You are trapped. The key is not a key. It is a weight. It is a stone. You have carried it for so long. You have forgotten what it is. You have made it into a god. You have made it into a savior. It is nothing. It is just brass."

You laugh. It is a dry laugh. It is a hollow laugh. It echoes in the room. It bounces off the walls. It dies in the corner. You look at the door. You look at the window. You look at the floor. You are alone. You have always been alone. The ally is a stranger. The key is a lie. The quest is a dream. The dream is over.

The landlord knocks. It is loud. It is violent. It is angry. You do not move. The woman does not move. The knocking stops. It is worse than the noise. It is the silence. It is the threat. It is the end.

"I will open it," you say. Your voice is steady. It is calm. It is strange. You stand up. Your legs are weak. Your knees buckle. You hold onto the table. The table holds you. You walk to the door. You open it. The man stands there. He is tall. He is broad. He is red. His face is red. His eyes are red. He looks at you. He looks at the woman. He looks at the table. He looks at the paper.

"Rent is late," he says.

"Yes," you say.

"Get out," he says.

"No," you say.

The man steps forward. His shadow falls over you. It is long. It is dark. It is heavy. You feel it on your skin. You feel it in your bones. You feel it in your blood. You are small. You are weak. You are afraid. But you do not move. You look at him. You look into his eyes. You see fear. You see guilt. You see shame.

"I have the proof," you say. "I have the names. I have the key."

The man blinks. He steps back. He looks at the woman. He looks at the paper. He looks at you. He sees your madness. He sees your poverty. He sees your hunger. He sees your nothingness. He turns away. He walks to the door. He opens it. The rain pours in. The cold rushes in. The man disappears. He is gone. He is vanished. He is forgotten.

You are alone. You are with the woman. She stands up. She walks to you. She reaches out. She takes the key from your hand. Her fingers are cold. Her fingers are soft. She holds it. She looks at it. She looks at you.

"It is done," she says.

You feel a lightness. It is sudden. It is violent. It is sweet. Your chest expands. Your lungs fill. Your mind clears. The noise in your head stops. The ticking of the clock stops. The rain stops. The silence is deep. The silence is pure. The silence is holy.

You look at the key in her hand. It is just brass. It is just metal. It is just old. It is just worn. It is nothing. It is everything. It is the end.

She walks to the door. She opens it. The rain is still falling. The street is dark. The street is wet. The street is empty. She steps out. She does not look back. The door closes. The sound is soft. The sound is gentle. The sound is final.

You are alone. You are in the chair. The wood creaks. It is a small office. The walls are thin. The air is cold. You are the investigator. You hold nothing. Your hands are empty. Your hands are open. Your hands are free. You look at the table. The paper is there. It is thin. It is white. It is stained. You look at it. You know the names. You know the dates. You know the deaths. You know the truth. The truth is empty. The truth is dust. The truth is silence.

You stand up. Your legs are strong. Your back is straight. Your soul is light. You walk to the window. You look out. The rain is stopping. The clouds are breaking. The sky is gray. The sky is open. The sky is vast. You see the street. You see the dark. You see the wet. You see the empty. You see the life. You see the death. You see the end.

You turn away. You walk to the door. You open it. You step out. The rain hits your face. It is cold. It is clean. It is fresh. It washes you. It cleanses you. It frees you. You walk into the street. You walk into the dark. You walk into the wet. You walk into the empty. You walk into the life. You walk into the death. You walk into the end.

You are gone. You are vanished. You are forgotten. You are free.
