The Distant Nightmare

The ceiling tile cracks.

It splits down the middle. A jagged tear in the white gypsum. Dust falls. It lands on your lap. You do not move. You stare at the fracture. It looks like a wound.

You are in the basement. The fluorescent lights buzz. It is a low, sickly sound. You are looking for evidence. You are always looking for evidence. The file folder is open. It is thin. It holds your life.

"Stop staring," says Miller.

He stands by the door. He holds a coffee cup. His sleeve is rolled up. He looks tired. He looks like you.

"I am working," you say.

"You are wasting time."

Miller sets the cup on the desk. The ceramic clinks against the metal. The sound is sharp. It cuts the air.

"Find it," he says.

"Find what?"

"The anomaly."

"There is no anomaly."

"Check the ledger."

You turn the page. The numbers are small. They are black. They are neat. They lie. You know they lie. You have always known.

Miller leans against the wall. He watches you. His eyes are cold. They are the color of the concrete floor.

"Your wife called," he says.

You freeze. Your hand stops moving. The pen is still in your grip. It is white. It is cheap.

"What did she say?"

"Nothing."

"She called."

"She called to say you are late."

"I am not late."

"It is six o'clock."

You look at the clock. It is six o'clock. The second hand ticks. It ticks. It ticks. It is a heartbeat. It is a countdown.

"I have to go," you say.

"Not yet."

"I have to go."

"Sit down."

"I will not sit."

Miller sighs. He looks at the ceiling. He looks at the crack. He looks at you.

"You are breaking," he says.

"I am fine."

"You are shaking."

You look at your hands. They are steady. They are pale. They are yours.

"I am holding it together," you say.

"Are you?"

"Yes."

"Liar."

The word hangs in the air. It is heavy. It is soft. It lands on you. You do not flinch. You do not blink. You look at him. You see the truth in his face. You have always seen it. You just refused to name it.

"Who are you?" you ask.

Miller smiles. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is the smile of a man who has lost something.

"I am the one who keeps you," he says.

"No."

"Yes."

"Who did you work for?"

"Me."

"Who are you?"

"I am the system."

You laugh. It is a dry sound. It is a cracked sound. It is the sound of the ceiling falling.

"You are no one," you say.

"I am everyone."

Miller reaches into his pocket. He pulls out a key. It is silver. It is small. It is cold. He places it on the desk.

It sits next to the pen. It sits next to the coffee. It sits next to the file.

"Open it," he says.

"I will not open it."

"You will."

"Why?"

"Because you want to."

You look at the key. It glints under the light. It is a trap. It is a door. It is a choice.

You pick it up. It is heavy. It is cold. It bites your fingers.

Miller nods. He turns away. He walks to the door. He stops. He looks back.

"Be careful," he says.

"Of what?"

"Of being free."

He leaves. The door closes. The latch clicks. The sound is final. The room is silent. The lights buzz. The dust settles.

You hold the key. You look at the wall. There is a door behind you. It is small. It is gray. It is locked.

You stand up. Your legs are stiff. Your back is sore. You walk to the door. You turn the key in the lock. It turns. It clicks. It opens.

The door swings open.

There is a room. It is white. It is empty. It is clean. It is yours.

You step inside. The door closes behind you. You turn around. You look at the door. It is gone.

You are alone.

You are free.

The room is silent. The air is still. You breathe in. You breathe out. The air is cool. The air is clean.

You look at your hands. They are shaking. They are pale. They are yours.

You look at the floor. There is a crack. It is small. It is black. It is deep. It is in the concrete.

You kneel down. You touch the crack. It is rough. It is cold. It is real.

You remember the house. The house in the suburbs. The white picket fence. The garden. The flowers. You remember the smell of the roses. You remember the sound of the wind. You remember the feeling of the sun on your skin.

You remember her.

Her name is Elena. She is gone. She has been gone for years. She is dead. She is buried. She is in the ground.

You remember the day she left. It was a Tuesday. It was raining. The sky was gray. The streets were wet. She stood on the porch. She held her coat. She held her bag. She looked at you.

"Go," she said.

"I will not go."

"You must."

"Why?"

"Because you are sick."

"I am not sick."

"You are lost."

"I am here."

"You are not here."

She walked away. Her heels clicked on the pavement. The sound faded. The rain fell. The world turned.

You stayed. You stayed in the house. You stayed in the chair. You stayed in the dark. You waited. You waited for the truth. You waited for the evidence. You waited for the crack.

It came.

It came in the form of Miller. It came in the form of the basement. It came in the form of the key.

You stand up. You look at the white walls. You look at the empty space. You look at the door.

You are free.

The freedom is heavy. It presses on your chest. It weighs on your shoulders. It pulls at your mind.

You want to scream. You want to cry. You want to run. You want to hide. You want to be safe.

You are not safe. You are not home. You are not loved.

You are alone.

You look at the crack in the floor. It is growing. It is spreading. It is eating the concrete. It is eating the foundation.

You look at your hands. They are empty. They are open. They are ready.

You reach for the wall. You grab the edge of the crack. You pull.

The concrete breaks. It crumbles. It falls.

The wall falls.

The light floods in. It is bright. It is blinding. It is white.

You fall.

You land on the floor. The dust rises. It swirls around you. It fills your lungs. It fills your eyes. It fills your mouth.

You cough. You gasp. You taste the dust. It is dry. It is bitter. It is real.

You look up. The ceiling is gone. The sky is above you. It is blue. It is vast. It is empty.

You are outside.

You are in the street. The cars are moving. The people are walking. The world is turning.

You stand up. Your legs are weak. Your head is spinning. You are alive.

You look at your hands. They are covered in dust. They are covered in blood. They are covered in life.

You look at the sky. You look at the sun. It is shining. It is warm. It is bright.

You are free.

The price is high. The cost is great. The debt is due.

You pay it.

You pay it with your memory. You pay it with your name. You pay it with your love.

You pay it with yourself.

You walk down the street. The crowd parts. They look at you. They see the dust. They see the blood. They see the void.

They do not see you. They see the ghost. They see the crack. They see the fall.

You keep walking. You do not stop. You do not look back. You do not turn around.

You are going somewhere. You do not know where. You do not know why. You do not know who.

You know what.

You know the cost.

You know the price.

You know the truth.

The truth is simple. The truth is hard. The truth is cold.

You are free.

The freedom is a cage. The cage is open. The door is gone. The lock is broken. The key is lost.

You are in the cage.

You are in the world.

You are in the life.

You are in the pain.

You are in the joy.

You are in the end.

The end is now. The end is here. The end is you.

You breathe in. You breathe out. The air is cool. The air is clean. The air is life.

You walk on.

The sun sets. The stars come out. The moon rises. The night falls. The dark comes.

You are in the dark.

You are in the light.

You are in the middle.

You are in the crack.

You are in the break.

You are in the fall.

You are in the rise.

You are in the truth.

You are free.
