The Golden Ritual

The feast was loud. It was a roar of iron and blood. You sat at the end of the long oak table, the wood splintered under the weight of the elders. The air smelled of roasted goat and stale wine. You held your cup. Your hand shook. Not from cold. The cold was in the bones. It was in the marrow. You were far from home. The miles were too many to count. They had taken your name. They had given you a title. Exile. Traitor. You drank. The wine burned. It tasted of ash.

Across the table, Lord Blackwood laughed. He was a large man. His face was red. His eyes were wet. He looked at you. He smiled. It was a bad smile. It showed too many teeth.

"To the guest," he said. His voice was thick. "The one who walks between the worlds."

The hall erupted. They clapped. They shouted. They threw bones at the floor. The dogs howled. You did not smile. You could not. You looked at the floor. You saw a shadow. It moved. It was not your shadow. It was smaller. It was curled up. It was afraid.

You knew who it was. You knew what it was. The Mark. The Sigil. It had followed you. It had crossed the sea. It had crossed the border. It was here. It was in the hall. It was in the air. You could feel it. It tickled your skin. It whispered to you. It told you to run. It told you to hide. You did not listen. You were too tired to run.

Blackwood leaned forward. He poured more wine. The liquid splashed. It ran over your knuckles. It was warm. It felt like blood.

"You look well," Blackwood said. "Stronger than we expected. The journey did not break you."

"I am not broken," you said. Your voice was low. It was dry. "I am only waiting."

"Waiting for what?" Blackwood asked. He tapped the table. The sound was sharp. "Waiting for the king? For the pardon? Do not dream, exile. The law is the law. The border is the border. You are nothing here. You are less than nothing. You are a stain on our land."

The room went quiet. The laughter died. The dogs stopped howling. The air stopped moving. Everyone looked at you. Their faces were masks. White. Hard. They were waiting for you to beg. They were waiting for you to break. You did not break. You held your cup. You held your breath.

Behind you, the door opened. A wind blew in. It was cold. It carried the scent of snow. A man walked in. He wore a grey cloak. His face was hidden. He walked to the center of the hall. He stopped. He took off his hood.

It was Thomas.

Thomas was your brother. He was dead. You had buried him. You had watched the dirt fall. You had wept. But here he was. He looked young. He looked thin. His eyes were dark. They were hollow. He looked at you. He did not smile. He did not wave. He just stood there. He was the Traitor. The one they had sent to watch you. The one who had sold your secrets. The one who had led the soldiers to your door.

You felt a punch in your gut. It was not anger. It was fear. It was a cold, sharp fear. It spread through your chest. It spread to your limbs. You looked at Blackwood. Blackwood was watching Thomas. Blackwood was smiling.

"Thomas," Blackwood said. "My faithful servant. Tell them. Tell them why you are here."

Thomas looked at you. His eyes were wet. He opened his mouth. He said nothing. He closed his mouth. He looked down. He looked at his hands. His hands were shaking. Like yours.

"Tell them," Blackwood said again. His voice was hard. "Tell them what he did. Tell them what he stole."

Thomas looked up. He looked at the table. He looked at the wine. He looked at the bones. He looked at the shadows. Then he looked at you. He saw the fear in your eyes. He saw the Mark. He saw the truth. He knew. He always knew.

"He is innocent," Thomas said.

The hall was silent. The silence was heavy. It pressed on your ears. It pressed on your chest. Blackwood’s face changed. The smile vanished. His eyes narrowed. His hands tightened on the table.

"Innocent?" Blackwood said. "You lie. You always lie. You are his brother. You are part of him. You are part of the sin."

"No," Thomas said. His voice was steady now. "It is not a sin. It is a gift. He did not steal the Mark. He carried it. He protected it. He kept it safe. For you. For us. For the land."

Blackwood stood up. He pushed his chair back. The chair scraped against the floor. The sound was loud. It was a scream. Blackwood’s face was red. His veins were bulging.

"Insolence," Blackwood said. "Absolute insolence. You are both traitors. You are both thieves. You will be judged. You will be punished. The law will have its way."

Thomas stepped forward. He walked toward you. He moved slowly. He moved like a ghost. He stopped next to you. He did not touch you. He did not speak. He just stood there. He was a mirror. He reflected your pain. He reflected your shame. He reflected your love.

You looked at him. You wanted to speak. You wanted to ask why. You wanted to ask how. You wanted to ask if it was real. But your throat was closed. Your voice was gone. You were mute. You were empty. You were nothing.

Blackwood pointed at you. He pointed at Thomas. He pointed at the door.

"Seize them," Blackwood said. "Take them to the cells. Keep them apart. Keep them silent. Let them rot. Let them think. Let them know their place."

The guards moved. They were large. They were strong. They had swords. They had chains. They moved like shadows. They came for you. They came for Thomas.

You did not run. You did not fight. You stood up. You walked to the door. You walked past the guards. You walked into the night. The snow fell. It was white. It was soft. It was silent. It covered the ground. It covered the stones. It covered the blood.

Thomas walked behind you. He did not speak. He did not look at you. He just followed. He was a shadow. He was a ghost. He was a memory.

You walked for miles. The cold was deep. The cold was real. It bit into your skin. It bit into your bones. You felt it. You felt everything. You felt the Mark. It was warm. It was alive. It pulsed in your chest. It beat with your heart. It was not a curse. It was a life. It was a truth.

You stopped. You turned around. Thomas was there. He was close. He was so close. You could see his face. You could see his eyes. They were wet. They were full. They were full of love. It was not romantic love. It was not soft love. It was primal love. It was wild love. It was the love of the blood. The love of the bone. The love of the earth.

You reached out. You took his hand. Your hand was cold. His hand was warm. You held it. You held it tight. You did not let go. You would not let go.

"We are not exiles," you said. Your voice was small. It was quiet. But it was clear. It cut through the wind. It cut through the snow. "We are not traitors. We are the keepers. We are the roots. We are the truth."

Thomas nodded. He did not speak. He did not need to. You understood. You had always understood. The misunderstanding was theirs. The lie was theirs. The fear was theirs. You had accepted it. You had been defeated. You had been broken. But you were not dead. You were not gone. You were here. You were real.

The snow fell. It covered you. It covered him. It covered the world. The world was white. The world was clean. The world was new. You stood there. You held his hand. You waited. You did not run. You did not hide. You were the Mark. You were the Sigil. You were the truth.

The guards came. They came with torches. They came with swords. They came with fury. They saw you. They saw Thomas. They saw the snow. They saw the truth. They stopped. They hesitated. They looked at the snow. They looked at the ground. They looked at the Mark. It was glowing. It was bright. It was beautiful. It was terrifying.

The guards dropped their swords. The swords clattered on the ice. The sound was sharp. The sound was final. The guards turned. They ran. They ran into the darkness. They ran away from the light. They ran away from the truth.

You stood alone. Thomas was gone. He had vanished. He was part of the snow. He was part of the wind. He was part of the Mark. You were alone. But you were not empty. You were full. You were complete. You were the ritual. You were the golden ritual. You were the end. You were the beginning.

You closed your eyes. You felt the cold. You felt the warmth. You felt the love. You felt the fate. It was not yours to fight. It was not yours to change. It was yours to bear. It was yours to hold. It was yours to be.

You opened your eyes. The snow was falling. The night was deep. The road was long. You took a step. You took another step. You walked into the dark. You walked into the light. You walked into the truth. You were the exile. You were the keeper. You were the truth. And the truth was enough.
