The Distant Machine

The rain fell in sheets.

It struck the mud. It soaked the cloak.

He walked.

The road was long. The sky was low.

His hands shook.

Not from cold.

From fear.

He looked at his right hand.

The fingers were stiff.

The skin was pale.

A map was drawn there.

Lines of blue.

Veins like rivers.

They pulsed.

They did not stop.

He had seen them before.

In the mirror.

In the morning.

He had tried to hide them.

Bandages.

Thick wool.

They did not work.

The truth seeped through.

Like water.

Like blood.

He was Thomas.

He was a scholar.

He had left home.

Years ago.

For the books.

For the light.

He had thought the light would heal.

It did not.

It only showed.

It showed everything.

The cracks.

The rot.

The end.

He walked on.

The forest closed in.

Dark trees.

High branches.

The wind whispered.

It sounded like names.

Old names.

Forgotten names.

He heard his own.

Thomas.

Thomas.

Thomas.

He stopped.

He leaned against a tree.

The bark was rough.

It hurt.

He welcomed the pain.

It was real.

He was not alone.

A figure appeared.

In the mist.

A woman.

Grey hair.

A heavy dress.

She held a lantern.

The flame danced.

She walked slowly.

Her face was kind.

But eyes were sharp.

She knew him.

He knew her.

Margaret.

His sister.

She had died.

Ten years ago.

Or was it more?

Time was strange.

Here.

In the wild.

She stopped.

She looked at him.

She did not speak.

She waited.

He opened his mouth.

No sound came.

His throat was tight.

He tried again.

“Margaret.”

Her voice was soft.

Like dry leaves.

“You look tired, Tom.”

He nodded.

“I am.”

“Why did you stop?”

“I could not go on.”

“Why?”

He looked at his hand.

The veins glowed.

Bright blue.

Like ice.

“I cannot hide it.”

She looked at the hand.

Her face did not change.

“I know.”

“You know?”

“I saw it.”

“When?”

“Long ago.”

“In the mirror.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was alone.”

“You were not.”

He laughed.

A dry sound.

A crack in stone.

“It is a curse.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“Is it?”

He looked at her.

Her eyes were sad.

But clear.

“You think it is a curse.”

“I feel it.”

“Feelings lie.”

“Do they?”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

The lantern light touched his face.

It was warm.

It was gentle.

“You seek the machine.”

He froze.

The machine.

The old myth.

The source of time.

The end of all things.

He had written about it.

In his books.

He had called it a metaphor.

A trick of the mind.

A fear of the void.

He had not believed.

He had lied.

To himself.

To the world.

“Yes,” he whispered. “I seek it.”

“It is not a machine.”

“It is the heart.”

“It is not a machine.”

“It is the heart.”

He shook his head.

“It is the end.”

“It is the beginning.”

He looked at his hand.

The veins pulsed.

Faster now.

His heart beat.

In sync.

A rhythm.

A drum.

He remembered his youth.

Running.

Breathing.

The joy of life.

The simplicity.

He had lost it.

In the study.

In the ink.

In the words.

He had built a cage.

Of knowledge.

He had locked himself in.

He had thought it was wisdom.

It was prison.

Margaret held out her hand.

Her palm was open.

Empty.

But full.

Full of light.

“Give it to me.”

“I cannot.”

“You can.”

“Take my hand.”

He hesitated.

The fear was strong.

The cold was deep.

But the pain was worse.

The pain of hiding.

The pain of lying.

He reached out.

His fingers touched hers.

They were warm.

They were soft.

He felt a pull.

A tugging.

In his chest.

In his soul.

The veins in his hand glowed brighter.

Blue turned white.

White turned gold.

The light spread.

Up his arm.

Into his shoulder.

Into his neck.

It was not pain.

It was release.

It was breath.

He gasped.

The air was sweet.

The rain stopped.

The clouds broke.

The moon emerged.

Full.

Round.

Bright.

He looked at Margaret.

She was smiling.

It was a small smile.

A private smile.

She was not a ghost.

She was not a memory.

She was a truth.

She was the part of him that remained.

The part that loved.

The part that lived.

“You are not a curse,” she said.

“I am a gift.”

He wept.

The tears fell.

Hot.

Clean.

They washed the dirt.

They washed the fear.

The veins in his hand faded.

Not gone.

But quiet.

They were just veins.

Just life.

Just blood.

He looked at his hand.

It was his own.

He held it up.

He looked at the moon.

The moon looked back.

It did not judge.

It did not demand.

It simply was.

He understood.

Knowledge was not a shield.

It was a window.

He had closed it.

He had painted over it.

He had thought the darkness was safety.

It was blindness.

The light was not the enemy.

The light was the way.

He had fought the light.

He had feared the end.

But the end was not death.

The end was acceptance.

The end was peace.

Margaret’s form began to fade.

Not into nothing.

Into everything.

Into the air.

Into the trees.

Into the stone.

She was gone.

But she was here.

In the silence.

In the calm.

He stood alone.

But he was not empty.

He was full.

Full of the rain.

Full of the moon.

Full of the life.

He looked at his hand.

The veins were blue.

They pulsed.

Strong.

Steady.

He made a fist.

He opened it.

The fingers moved.

Free.

He turned.

The road was still there.

But it looked different.

It was not a path to nowhere.

It was a path to home.

Not the house.

Not the town.

The home within.

He began to walk.

The steps were light.

The breath was deep.

The mind was clear.

He did not run.

He did not hide.

He walked.

The forest opened.

The hills rose.

The stars appeared.

They were countless.

They were bright.

He looked up.

He saw the patterns.

The constellations.

The old stories.

The new truths.

He was part of it.

A small part.

A vital part.

The machine was not outside.

It was inside.

It was the heart.

It was the rhythm.

It was the love.

He had tried to fix it.

To understand it.

To control it.

He had failed.

But he had learned.

The lesson was simple.

To let go.

To trust.

To live.

The sun would rise.

The day would come.

The world would turn.

And he would be there.

Not as a scholar.

Not as a prisoner.

As a man.

As a brother.

As a friend.

To himself.

To the world.

He walked on.

The mud was soft.

The air was cool.

The heart was strong.

The end was not the end.

It was the beginning.

Of the real.

Of the true.

Of the free.

He did not look back.

There was nothing to see.

Only the path ahead.

Only the light.

Only the life.

He breathed.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

The rhythm held.

The heart beat.

The soul sang.

He was Thomas.

He was here.

He was alive.

The story was not over.

It was just beginning.

And that was enough.

That was everything.

The rain had stopped.

The sky was clear.

The earth was quiet.

He walked.

And the world turned.

And he turned with it.

Not in fear.

In hope.

In faith.

In love.

The distant machine was close.

It was here.

It was him.

It was them.

It was all.

And it was good.

It was right.

It was true.

He smiled.

A small smile.

A private smile.

He walked on.

Into the light.

Into the life.

Into the end.

Which was the start.

Of everything.

Of anything.

Of nothing.

Of all.

He was free.

Finally.

Truly.

Completely.

He was home.

The road stretched out.

Endless.

Beautiful.

He walked.

And walked.

And walked.

The moon followed.

The stars watched.

The earth held.

He was held.

He was safe.

He was loved.

He was known.

He was seen.

And he did not hide.

He did not lie.

He was.

Simply.

Purely.

Humanly.

Thomas.

The scholar.

The wanderer.

The friend.

The brother.

The man.

He was enough.

He was all.

He was free.

The story ends.

But the life goes on.

And on.

And on.

Into the dawn.

Into the day.

Into the light.

Into the truth.

Into the peace.

Into the love.

Into the end.

Into the beginning.

Into the now.

Into the here.

Into the heart.

Into the soul.

Into the self.

Into the world.

Into the all.

He was free.

He was home.

He was alive.

He was here.

He was now.

He was enough.

He was all.

He was free.
