The Pale Tale

The building breathes. It breathes with the heavy, wet lungs of old stone. You stand in the center of the rotunda. The floor is cold. Your boots are wet. The water is black. It pools at your ankles. It rises. Slowly. The walls are high. They curve. They loom. They are not just walls. They are ribs. The ribs of a beast. A beast that sleeps. A beast that waits. You are the soldier. You are the keeper. You are the key. And the lock. And the key is turning.

The door opens. It does not creak. It sighs. The sound is deep. It is old. It is the sound of a man who has held his breath for a century. He steps out. He is small. He is grey. He wears a coat that fits too well. The fabric is dark. It drinks the light. He looks at you. His eyes are clear. They are empty. They are full of nothing.

"Ah," he says. His voice is dry. Like leaves. "You are early."

You do not answer. You cannot. The water is higher. It touches your knees. The cold is a knife. It cuts. It bites. It does not stop. You look at the water. You look at him. You look at the walls. The walls are watching. The shadows are moving. They are not shadows. They are faces. They are the faces of the dead. They are the faces of the men you saved. They are the faces of the men you failed.

"You know why I am here," he says. It is not a question. It is a statement. It is a fact. It is the ground under your feet. It is the water in your lungs.

"Yes," you say. The word is small. It is weak. It is a leaf on the wind.

"Then we must hurry. The tide is coming. The tide always comes. It does not care for us. It does not care for the stone. It only cares for itself. It is hungry. It is eternal. It is time."

Time. The word hangs in the air. It is thick. It is sweet. It is rotten. You think of your hands. They are shaking. They are not your hands anymore. They are the hands of the building. They are the hands of the past. They are the hands of the future. You think of the men. You think of the noise. You think of the silence. You think of the choice.

"Why?" you ask. The word is a tear. It falls into the water. It makes a ripple. The ripple spreads. It touches the wall. The wall shudders.

"Because I am tired," he says. He smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a kind smile. It is the smile of a father. It is the smile of a friend. It is the smile of a ghost. "I have carried this for a long time. It is heavy. It is cold. It is dark. I cannot carry it anymore. I must put it down. I must let it go. I must let you go."

He reaches into his coat. He pulls out a key. It is small. It is gold. It is warm. It glows. It pulses. It beats. It is a heart. It is a soul. It is the life of the building. He holds it out to you. His hand is steady. His eyes are wet.

"Take it," he says. "Take it and be free. Take it and be lost. Take it and be alone. Take it and be the keeper. Take it and be the lock. Take it and be the door."

You look at the key. You look at him. You look at the water. The water is at your waist. It is strong. It is fierce. It is alive. It wants you. It wants him. It wants the key. It wants the stone. It wants all of it.

"I cannot," you say. The words are hard. They are sharp. They are steel. "I am not ready. I am not strong. I am not worthy. I am just a man. I am just a soldier. I am just a body. I am just a breath."

He nods. He does not argue. He does not plead. He understands. He has always understood. He is the mirror. He is the shadow. He is the truth.

"Then I will stay," he says. His voice is soft. It is gentle. It is final. "I will hold the door. I will hold the stone. I will hold the breath. I will hold the pain. I will hold the guilt. I will hold the love. I will hold it all. Until the end. Until the water rises. Until the stone breaks. Until the light goes out."

He steps back. He steps into the shadow. The shadow swallows him. It is quick. It is silent. It is absolute. The key remains in his hand. He holds it up. He glows. He shines. He is a star. He is a sun. He is a fire. He is a memory.

"Go," he says. "Go now. Go home. Go to sleep. Go to rest. Go to life. Leave me here. Leave me with the dead. Leave me with the dark. Leave me with the stone. Let me be the sacrifice. Let me be the redemption. Let me be the end."

You turn. You walk. Your feet are heavy. The water is deep. It is cold. It is wet. It is alive. You walk. You walk. You walk. The door is behind you. The door is closing. The sound is low. The sound is long. The sound is a song. It is a lullaby. It is a dirge. It is a prayer.

You step out. The air is fresh. It is cold. It is crisp. It is real. You look back. The building is there. It is tall. It is dark. It is silent. The windows are black. The doors are shut. The lights are off. It is empty. It is dead. It is gone.

But it is not gone. It is in you. It is in your bones. It is in your blood. It is in your breath. You feel it. You feel the weight. You feel the cold. You feel the pain. You feel the love. It is instinct. It is primal. It is beyond reason. It is the love of a community. It is the love of a people. It is the love of a world. It is the love of a soul.

You walk on. The street is empty. The sky is grey. The rain is falling. It is light. It is soft. It is gentle. It is a blessing. It is a curse. It is a memory. It is a truth. You walk. You walk. You walk. You are alone. You are together. You are free. You are bound. You are the soldier. You are the keeper. You are the key. And the lock. And the door.

The building breathes. It breathes with the heavy, wet lungs of old stone. It breathes with you. It breathes with the world. It breathes with time. It breathes with life. It breathes with death. It breathes with hope. It breathes with despair. It breathes with love. It breathes with loss. It breathes with sacrifice. It breathes with redemption. It breathes with truth. It breathes with lies. It breathes with everything. It breathes with nothing.

You stop. You look up. The rain stops. The clouds break. The sun shines. It is pale. It is weak. It is fragile. It is beautiful. It is the sun of the morning. It is the sun of the day. It is the sun of the night. It is the sun of the end. It is the sun of the beginning. It is the sun of the middle. It is the sun of all.

You close your eyes. You breathe in. You breathe out. You let go. You let it go. You let the pain go. You let the guilt go. You let the fear go. You let the love go. You let the building go. You let the man go. You let the key go. You let the water go. You let the stone go. You let the time go. You let the life go. You let the death go. You let it all go.

And in the silence. In the stillness. In the peace. In the quiet. In the dark. In the light. In the cold. In the warm. In the wet. In the dry. In the past. In the future. In the now. In the always. In the never. In the yes. In the no. In the maybe. In the surely. In the perhaps. In the certainly. In the doubt. In the faith. In the hope. In the despair. In the joy. In the sorrow. In the love. In the hate. In the kindness. In the cruelty. In the truth. In the lie. In the good. In the bad. In the right. In the wrong. In the high. In the low. In the fast. In the slow. In the loud. In the quiet. In the strong. In the weak. In the brave. In the coward. In the wise. In the foolish. In the rich. In the poor. In the old. In the young. In the dead. In the alive. In the here. In the there. In the when. In the where. In the who. In the what. In the why. In the how. In the is. In the was. In the will be. In the has been. In the is being. In the will have been. In the is. In the is. In the is.

You are free. You are lost. You are alone. You are the keeper. You are the lock. You are the door. You are the sacrifice. You are the redemption. You are the end. You are the beginning. You are the truth. You are the lie. You are the building. You are the man. You are the key. You are the water. You are the stone. You are the time. You are the life. You are the death. You are the love. You are the loss. You are the breath. You are the silence. You are the voice. You are the song. You are the dirge. You are the prayer. You are the memory. You are the present. You are the future. You are the past. You are the now. You are the always. You are the never. You are the yes. You are the no. You are the maybe. You are the surely. You are the perhaps. You are the certainly. You are the doubt. You are the faith. You are the hope. You are the despair. You are the joy. You are the sorrow. You are the love. You are the hate. You are the kindness. You are the cruelty. You are the truth. You are the lie. You are the good. You are the bad. You are the right. You are the wrong. You are the high. You are the low. You are the fast. You are the slow. You are the loud. You are the quiet. You are the strong. You are the weak. You are the brave. You are the coward. You are the wise. You are the foolish. You are the rich. You are the poor. You are the old. You are the young. You are the dead. You are the alive. You are the here. You are the there. You are the when. You are the where. You are the who. You are the what. You are the why. You are the how. You are the is. You are the was. You are the will be. You are the has been. You are the is being. You are the will have been. You are the is. You are the is. You are the is.
