The Pale Mist
The door locks. The metal click is final. A sound like a bone breaking. You stand in the hallway. The air is stale. It smells of damp wool and old paper. You are here to witness. You are here to end it. Your hands are steady. Your heart is not.
Margaret is at the table. She does not look up. Her hands are folded. They are white. They are still. She knows you are there. She has always known.
You place your badge on the wood. It slides. It stops against the edge. A small, metallic tombstone.
"Margaret," you say. Your voice is low. It is a rumble in the chest. "We need to speak."
She lifts her head. Her eyes are pale. They are the color of the sky before a storm. She looks at you. She sees the gun in your holster. She does not flinch. She knows the weight of it. She has carried it herself, in her mind, for years.
"You are late," she says. Her voice is thin. It is like dry leaves. "I was waiting for the rain."
"There is no rain," you reply. "There is only the order."
"The order," she repeats. She smiles. It is a sad smile. It does not reach her eyes. "They always have an order. A paper. A signature. A stamp. It makes it clean. It makes it right."
"It makes it necessary," you say.
"Necessary," she says. "A word we use to hide our fear. We are afraid, Thomas. We are afraid of what we have become."
You step closer. The floorboards creak. The sound is loud. It fills the room. You see the dust motes dancing in the single beam of light from the window. They are like ghosts. They are like time.
"Do you remember the war?" you ask.
She looks at the wall. The wallpaper is peeling. It curls like a dried leaf. "I remember the mud," she says. "I remember the smell of blood. It is in my nose. It never leaves. I have scrubbed my hands. I have scrubbed my face. It is inside me."
"I remember too," you say. "I remember your face. You were brave. You were the best."
"Brave," she says. "A word for the dead. The living are only afraid. And tired. And guilty."
The room is small. It is a box. The walls are closing in. You feel the pressure. It is in your lungs. It is in your throat. You want to speak. You want to explain. But there are no words. Words are useless here. They are like water in a sieve. They fall through. They leave nothing behind.
"Why them?" you ask. "Why did you do it?"
"Because they were coming," she says. "Because they would have hurt my son. I did it for him. I did it for you."
You freeze. Your hand goes to your holster. Your fingers touch the cold steel. "For me?"
"You are his father," she says. "In your eyes, I see him. I see his fear. I see his anger. I could not let them break him. So I broke them."
The truth hits you. It is a physical blow. It knocks the wind out of you. You stumble back. You hit the wall. The plaster dusts your shoulder.
"You lied," you whisper. "For years. You lied to me."
"I protected you," she says. "I protected us. From the truth. From the horror. If you knew, you would have stopped me. And he would be dead. And you would be a murderer. Instead, you are a hero. And I am a traitor. And we are free."
Free. The word hangs in the air. It is light. It is heavy. It is a chain. It is a wing.
"You are a traitor," you say. "And I am your executioner."
"Yes," she says. "But you are also my husband. In the eyes of the law, we are enemies. In the eyes of God, we are one. Which is it, Thomas? Which is the truth?"
You look at her. You look at the woman you loved. You look at the woman who saved your life. You look at the woman who damned her soul to save yours. The images shatter. They fall into pieces. They are like glass. They are like ice. You cannot hold them. You cannot put them back together.
"I don't know," you say. "I don't know what is true anymore."
"Then let me go," she says. "Let me walk out that door. Let me be free. Or let me stay. Let me be a prisoner. But do not make me a ghost. Do not make me a memory. I am here. I am alive. I am breathing."
You look at the gun. It is a black shape. It is a shadow. It is a promise. It is a lie.
"I have an order," you say.
"I know," she says. "I have lived with it. Every day. Every night. I have waited for it. I have prepared for it. I have made my peace. You have not."
You close your eyes. You see the mud. You see the blood. You see your son’s face. He is a child. He is a man. He is a ghost. He is everything. He is nothing.
"Thomas," she says. "Look at me."
You open your eyes. She is looking at you. Her eyes are clear. They are calm. They are empty. They are full.
"I forgive you," she says.
The words are a knife. They cut you. They cut deep. They cut to the bone. You gasp. You fall to your knees. The floor is cold. It seeps into your knees. It seeps into your soul.
"I forgive you," you whisper. "I forgive you for leaving. I forgive you for lying. I forgive you for saving me. I forgive you for killing yourself."
She nods. She stands up. She walks to the window. She looks out. The sky is gray. It is heavy. It is waiting.
"I am not dead," she says. "I am just tired. I am just alone. I am just you. Without you."
You stand up. Your legs are shaky. Your head is spinning. The room is tilting. It is like a ship. It is like a dream.
"We are one," you say. "We have always been one. Even in the dark. Even in the blood. We are one."
She turns. She looks at you. She smiles. It is a real smile. It is bright. It is warm. It is the sun. It is the light. It is the end.
"Come," she says. "Let us go. Let us leave this place. Let us leave this life. Let us be free."
You take her hand. Her hand is warm. It is soft. It is strong. It is yours. It has always been yours.
You walk to the door. You turn the handle. It is stiff. It resists. Then it gives. It opens. The air rushes in. It is cold. It is fresh. It is new.
You step out. She steps out. You are together. You are apart. You are one.
The door closes behind you. The metal click is final. A sound like a bone breaking. A sound like a heart beating. A sound like a life ending. A sound like a life beginning.
You walk into the street. The mist is pale. It is thick. It is heavy. It swallows you. It swallows her. It swallows the world. You cannot see. You cannot hear. You cannot feel. You are blind. You are deaf. You are numb.
But you are together. You are holding hands. You are walking. You are moving. You are alive.
The mist rises. It covers the sky. It covers the earth. It covers your faces. It covers your names. It covers your past. It covers your future. It covers everything.
You are no one. You are everyone. You are nothing. You are everything.
You are free.
