The Distant Crown

The bell rings. You stop. The sound is not mechanical. It is a throat clearing. A dry, rusted cough from the iron tower that stands above the roof of the church. It hangs in the air, thick and sweet, like rotting fruit.

You hold the crown. It is heavy. It is made of glass. It is your mirror.

Thomas stands by the door. He does not look at you. He looks at the street. The street is empty. The fog is high. It eats the houses. It eats the names on the front doors.

You are a prisoner. You know this. You have always known this. The cell is small. The walls are white. The light is cold. But you are free to walk. You are free to think. You are free to hate.

Hate is easy. Hate is warm.

The crown sits in your hand. It fits your head. It fits your skull. It is cold against your skin. It is the size of your mind. It is the shape of your guilt.

You remember the day you took it. You remember the hands of the old priest. You remember the smell of incense. You remember the lie. You told them you found it. You told them it was lost. You told them it was yours.

They believed you.

That is the worst part. Not the theft. Not the lie. The belief.

Thomas turns. His face is pale. His eyes are wet. He is the helper. He is the friend. He is the one who opened the door for you. He is the one who handed you the key.

He is the traitor.

You know this. You have known this for years. But you do not say it. You cannot say it. If you say it, the glass will break. If the glass breaks, you will die.

"Go," Thomas says. His voice is soft. It is the voice of a child. It is the voice of a ghost. "The town is waiting. They are waiting for you."

You look at him. You want to scream. You want to hit him. You want to pull the crown off and throw it into the fire.

But you do not.

You put the crown on your head. It settles into place. It feels like ice. It feels like bone.

You walk out.

The town is asleep. The windows are dark. The streets are wet. The air is thick with the scent of wet stone and old blood.

You walk fast. Your heart beats fast. Thump. Thump. Thump.

You pass the bakery. The sign is broken. The glass is cracked. You pass the school. The playground is empty. The swings do not move. There is no wind.

The bell rings again.

You stop.

The sound is louder. It is in your head. It is in your teeth. It is in the glass on your forehead.

You turn around. Thomas is behind you. He is smiling. It is a bad smile. It is a smile that does not reach his eyes.

"Did you forget?" he asks.

"No," you say.

"Good."

He walks beside you. He does not speak. He does not touch you. He is a shadow. He is a lie.

You reach the square. The church is there. The iron tower is there. The door is open.

You step inside.

The pews are empty. The altar is bare. The candles are out.

But there are people.

They are standing in the shadows. They are faceless. They are made of fog. They are the town. They are the judgment.

They do not move. They do not speak. They only watch.

You feel the crown tighten. It hurts. It burns.

You look at Thomas. He is standing by the door. He is watching them. He is watching you.

He nods.

It is a small nod. It is a final nod.

He leaves.

The door closes.

The sound is like a gunshot.

You are alone.

The faceless ones step forward.

They do not attack. They do not hurt you. They just stand there. They surround you. They are a wall. They are a cage.

You try to speak. You try to explain. You try to tell them that you were tired. You try to tell them that you were cold. You try to tell them that you needed to be seen.

But your mouth is dry. Your tongue is heavy.

The crown presses against your eyes. You see only darkness. You see only the shape of your own face in the glass.

You are the monster. You are the sinner. You are the one who broke the law.

The law is the town. The town is the law.

You have betrayed them. You have betrayed Thomas. You have betrayed yourself.

You want to take the crown off. You reach up. Your hands are shaking.

The faceless ones lean in.

You feel their breath. It is cold. It is dead.

You pull the crown off.

It is heavy. It is wet.

You hold it in your hands.

You look at it.

It is not glass.

It is skin.

It is your skin.

It is the skin of your face.

You have not stolen a crown. You have stolen your own face. You have hidden it. You have kept it safe.

And now, you are naked.

The faceless ones step back.

They look at you.

They do not see a prisoner. They do not see a sinner.

They see a hole.

They see an empty space where a person should be.

You scream.

The sound is not a sound. It is a tear. It is a rip.

The bell rings.

The tower shakes.

The fog pours in.

It fills the church. It fills the pews. It fills the air.

You cannot breathe.

You cannot see.

You drop the face.

It hits the stone floor.

It does not break.

It laughs.

A dry, rusted laugh.

The same laugh as the bell.

You fall to your knees.

You are small. You are nothing.

The faceless ones begin to fade.

They are not angry. They are not sad.

They are bored.

You have nothing to offer them. You have no face. You have no name. You have no story.

You are just a body.

A body in a church.

A body in the fog.

You wait for the end.

You wait for the light.

You wait for Thomas.

But he does not come.

He will never come.

He never came.

He was never real.

He was the fog.

He was the bell.

He was the lie.

You are alone.

You have always been alone.

The crown is on the floor.

You look at it.

It is waiting for you.

It is patient.

It is kind.

It is the only thing that knows what you are.

You pick it up.

You put it back on.

The pain returns.

The cold returns.

The weight returns.

But you are whole again.

You are a prisoner.

You are a sinner.

You are a king.

The bell rings one last time.

It is a soft sound.

It is a goodbye.

The fog lifts.

The sun comes out.

It is a small sun. It is a pale sun. It is a dead sun.

But it is light.

You stand up.

You walk to the door.

You open it.

The town is there.

The people are there.

They are not faceless.

They are real.

They are looking at you.

They are waiting.

You have your face.

You have your name.

You have your guilt.

You are free.

You walk out.

The bell is silent.

The sky is clear.

The air is cold.

You are alive.

You are the only one who knows the truth.

You are the only one who carries the weight.

You are the hero.

You are the fool.

You are the crown.

And you are the head that holds it.

The story ends.

The pain remains.

The love remains.

The hate remains.

But the silence is new.

It is quiet.

It is clean.

It is yours.
