The Pale Tale
The stone bites.
You feel it in the marrow. The chisel slips. Blood mixes with dust. Your fingers numb. The cold is ancient. It seeps through the wool, through the skin, into the bone. You are in the vault. The air is thick. It tastes of iron and rot. You swing again. The sound is dull. A thud. A crack. The ceiling groans.
You are Elias. You are the Archivist. You are the keeper of words. But today, words are useless. Only stone matters. Only the break matters.
Above you, the world is burning. Below, the silence is heavy. You are not alone. You are never alone in the dark. The shadows have faces. They are the faces of the men who sent you here. They are the faces of the men who will kill you when you fail.
The chisel hits a vein of quartz. It sparks. A tiny blue light. It dies. The dark rushes back.
You remember the library. The smell of vellum. The quiet hum of scribes. You remember the peace. That peace is gone. It was a lie. A polite lie. A lie woven from ink and fear.
The door above opens. Light floods in. It is blinding. It burns. You shield your eyes. A hand grabs your shoulder. It is gentle. Too gentle.
"Done?"
The voice is soft. It is the voice of Father Thomas. He is the Abbot. He is the one who ordered this. He is the one who will burn the books if you do not destroy them.
"Not yet," you say. Your voice is a rasp. It is the voice of a dead man.
"Take your time." He steps closer. He smells of lavender. It is a sick smell. It covers the stench of the crypt. "The men are waiting. The fire is ready."
You look at the hole in the wall. It is small. It is a mouth. It is a wound in the side of the church. You are the surgeon. You are cutting out the rot. But the rot is the heart. You are killing the church to save it. That is the paradox. That is the madness.
"I need more light," you say.
Thomas smiles. It does not reach his eyes. "We have no more tallow. The war takes it all."
The war. The kings fight for land. They fight for gold. They fight for God. They do not know what God is. They do not know what knowledge is. They only know power. And power is a hunger. It eats. It always eats.
You look at Thomas. You see the fear in his eyes. He is afraid of you. He is afraid of what you know. He is afraid of the truth. The truth is a weapon. And you are holding it.
"Who else knows?" you ask.
The smile fades. The gentleness drops away. It is like a mask falling off. Underneath is the stone. Hard. Cold. Unyielding.
"No one," he says. "No one knows but us."
That is a lie. You know it is a lie. The lie is in the air. It is in the way he stands. It is in the shadow he casts.
"Who sent the soldiers?" you ask.
Thomas steps back. His hand goes to his sword. It is a reflex. A muscle memory. "Answer the question, Elias."
"Who sent them?"
"I did."
"No." You shake your head. The movement is slow. Heavy. "You did not. You are a coward. You follow. You always follow."
The words hang in the air. They are sharp. They cut. Thomas’s face changes. It hardens. The fear is gone. In its place is anger. Cold anger. The anger of a man who has been caught.
"You are tired," he says. His voice is low. It is a hiss. "You are broken. The weight of the past has crushed you. You see enemies where there are none."
"I see you," you say. "I see the truth."
"The truth is what I say it is."
"No." You strike the wall again. The chisel flies. It lands at your feet. You kick it away. It clatters in the dark. "The truth is that you are burning the world. And you are calling it light."
Thomas draws his sword. The steel sings. It is a beautiful sound. It is the sound of death.
"Step away from the wall," he says.
"I cannot."
"Step away."
"I am part of it."
You press your back against the stone. The cold bites into you. It is familiar. It is home. The stone is your body. The crack is your soul. You are breaking. You are shattering. But you are not falling.
Thomas steps forward. He swings. The sword misses. It hits the wall. It chatters. It bites deep. A chunk of stone falls. It hits the floor. It makes a small dust cloud.
You do not flinch. You do not move. You watch him. You see the tremor in his hand. You see the sweat on his brow. He is old. He is weak. He is afraid.
"You were my friend," you say.
The words stop him. He freezes. The sword hangs in the air. His eyes widen. The anger flickers. It dies. In its place is pain. Sharp. Raw.
"We studied together," you say. "We dreamed. We believed. We thought we could hold the light. We thought we could keep the dark at bay."
"We tried," he whispers.
"We failed."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because the light is heavy. It burns. It consumes. And we were not strong enough. We were not pure enough."
He lowers the sword. It is a slow movement. A surrender. Or a trap. You do not know. You do not care.
"I am tired, Elias," he says. His voice is thick. It is wet. "I am so tired."
"I know."
"I want to go home."
"There is no home."
"Yes, there is." He looks at the hole in the wall. He looks at you. "There is always a home. Inside."
He sheathes his sword. The sound is final. A click. A lock.
"Leave," he says.
"You sent the soldiers."
"I sent the soldiers to save the library. To protect the knowledge. They will burn the outer halls. They will burn the gardens. But the vault... the vault must stand."
"You are lying."
"Am I?" He steps closer. He is close now. You can see the tears in his eyes. They are dry. They have dried up long ago. "Look at the wall, Elias. Look at what you have done."
You look. The crack has spread. It runs like a vein. It runs through the stone. It runs through the foundation. The wall is weak. It is dying.
"If the wall falls," he says, "the books fall. If the books fall, the knowledge dies. And then we are nothing. We are dust. We are ash."
"So let it die," you say.
"No." He grabs your arm. His grip is tight. It hurts. "No. We must hold it. We must hold the line. Even if it kills us. Even if it breaks us. We must hold."
You look at him. You see the madness. You see the devotion. It is a terrible thing. It is a beautiful thing. It is the end.
"I will not hold it," you say.
"You will."
"Why?"
"Because you are the Architect. You built this place. You made the walls. You made the vault. You are the stone. You are the mortar. You are the bond."
The words hit you. They are true. They are terrible. You are the structure. You are the integrity. If you break, everything breaks.
You look at the crack. It is wider now. It is a gash. It is a scream.
"I am tired," you say.
"I know."
"I want to sleep."
"Sleep, then."
You close your eyes. The dark rushes in. It is warm. It is soft. It is the dark of the womb. The dark of the grave. The dark of the void.
You feel the vibration. It starts in the ground. It moves up through your feet. It moves up through your legs. It moves up through your spine. It is a hum. It is a song. It is the song of the earth.
The wall shakes. Dust falls. It lands on your face. It tastes of time.
Thomas speaks. His voice is far away. It is like a whisper. It is like a ghost.
"Elias."
You open your eyes.
The wall is gone.
The hole is not a hole. It is a door. It is a window. It is a sky.
Light floods in. It is not the light of the sun. It is the light of the stars. It is the light of the fire. It is the light of the end.
The books are burning. The ink is curling. The pages are turning. They are becoming ash. They are becoming smoke. They are becoming memory.
Thomas is gone. He is ash. He is smoke. He is memory.
You are alone. You are in the center of the storm. You are the eye. You are the silence.
You stand. Your legs are weak. They are shaking. You lean against a pillar. It is cold. It is solid. It is real.
You look at the fire. It is hungry. It is alive. It dances. It leaps. It laughs.
You feel a surge. It is not fear. It is not anger. It is peace. It is a deep, profound peace. It is the peace of the drop returning to the ocean.
You take a step. You move toward the fire. The heat hits you. It is hot. It is painful. It is good.
You walk into the light.
The world ends.
The silence begins.
