The Distant Nightmare

The rain hits the glass. It sounds like teeth chattering. You are sitting in the break room. The coffee is cold. You stare at your hand. It is shaking. The tremor is fine. It is constant. It lives in the knuckles. It lives in the wrist. You have had it for three days. You went to the doctor. He looked at your chart. He looked at your face. He did not look at your hand.

"You are stressed, David," he said.

Stress. A word for the tired. A word for the broken. You nodded. You paid the bill. You drove home. You locked the door. You sat on the floor. The tremor stopped. It only stops when you are alone. It only stops when you are safe.

Your phone buzzes. It is Mark. Mark is your boss. Mark is your friend. Or he was. Mark is the one who signed the contract. Mark is the one who told you to work late. Mark is the one who said, "We are a family here, David."

You do not pick up. You let it ring. It stops. You pick up.

"David?"

"I am here, Mark."

"Where are you? The server is down. The client is screaming. We need you."

"I am at home, Mark."

"We need you at the office. Now. Bring your laptop. Bring your head. Bring your soul if you have to, but bring your skills."

"Okay, Mark."

You hang up. You stand up. Your knees crack. You walk to the car. The city is wet. The neon lights bleed into the puddles. Red. Blue. Green. Sickness. You drive. The wipers slap the windshield. Left. Right. Left. Right. A metronome for the dying.

You arrive at the office. The lobby is empty. The lights are low. You take the elevator up. Floor ten. The doors open. The air is stale. It smells of ozone and fear. You walk down the hall. Your footsteps echo. Tap. Tap. Tap. A heartbeat. A countdown.

You enter the server room. The fans are roaring. The heat is thick. You can feel it on your skin. It is a living thing. It breathes on your neck. You sit at the console. The screens are red. Errors. Thousands of them. A cascade of failure.

You type. Your fingers fly. The tremor is gone. When you type, the hand is steady. The hand is a tool. The hand is a weapon. You fix the code. You patch the holes. You save the day. The screens turn green. The fans slow down. The heat drops.

Your phone buzzes. Mark again.

"Did you fix it?"

"Yes, Mark."

"Good. I am coming up. I have something to show you. Something important."

You wait. The elevator dings. The doors open. Mark walks in. He is wearing his suit. It is crisp. It is white. He looks tired. He looks happy.

"David," he says. "Come with me."

You follow him. You walk out of the server room. You walk into the conference room. The lights are bright. Too bright. Mark sits down. He opens a folder. He pulls out a file. He pushes it to you.

You look at the name. Your name. David Miller.

"What is this, Mark?"

"Read it."

You open the file. It is a report. A medical report. It is from the hospital. It is dated today. It is dated an hour ago. You did not go to the hospital. You went to the clinic. But this is a hospital.

You read the text. The words blur. The room tilts.

"Primary Tremor. Progressive. Neurodegenerative."

"No," you say. "I was at the clinic. I saw Dr. Evans."

"Dr. Evans is a general practitioner, David. He is not a specialist. He is a friend. I am not. I am your manager. I am responsible for your output. I am responsible for the company."

Mark leans forward. His eyes are cold. They are hard. They are stones.

"We cannot have you here, David. We cannot have you in the office. You are a liability. Your hands shake. You make mistakes. You scare the clients. You scare the staff."

"I am fine, Mark. I am healthy."

"You are not. I called the hospital. I sent you there. I paid for the test. I wanted to be sure. I wanted to be certain."

"You sent me?"

"I sent you. I called the lab. I told them to flag your blood. I told them to look for the markers. I told them to find the truth."

You look at the paper. It is real. It is ink. It is blood. It is your life.

"Why, Mark?"

"Because I love you, David."

The words hit you. They are heavy. They are soft. They are a knife.

"I love you," Mark says. "I have loved you for ten years. You are my best friend. You are my brother. I could not watch you suffer. I could not watch you break. I could not watch you fail. I had to take it from you. I had to take the choice from you."

You stand up. The chair scrapes the floor. It is a loud sound. It is a scream.

"You took it from me?"

"I took the burden. I took the guilt. I took the decision. You do not have to decide to quit. You do not have to decide to fight. You do not have to decide to die. I did it for you. I did it so you could be free."

Mark smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a gentle smile. It is the smile of a father. It is the smile of a god.

"You are free, David. You are safe. You are home."

You look at your hand. It is still. It is quiet. It is dead. You look at Mark. You see yourself. You see your shadow. You see your fear. You see your desire to be let go. You see your wish to be held.

"I hate you," you say.

"I know," Mark says. "I know you do. But you are grateful. I can see it in your eyes. You are grateful."

You walk out. You do not look back. You walk down the hall. You take the elevator. You go to the ground floor. You walk out into the night. The rain has stopped. The air is cold. The air is clean.

You walk to the park. You sit on a bench. You look at the city. The lights are far away. They are small. They are dim. You look at your hand. You flex your fingers. You make a fist. You open your hand. You close it again.

The tremor is gone. It is not gone. It is hidden. It is sleeping. It is waiting. You know it will come back. You know it will take you. You know it will eat you. You know it will kill you.

But for now, you are still. For now, you are quiet. For now, you are free.

You think of Mark. You think of his face. You think of his words. You think of his love. It is a terrible love. It is a dark love. It is a love that consumes. It is a love that destroys. It is a love that saves.

You realize something. You realize that Mark is you. Mark is the part of you that wants to die. Mark is the part of you that wants to be saved. Mark is the part of you that cannot bear the pain. You are Mark. You are the monster. You are the victim. You are the doctor. You are the patient.

The boundary is gone. The self is split. The self is shattered.

You stand up. You walk to the edge of the park. You look at the water. It is black. It is deep. It is still. You look at your reflection. It is blurry. It is distorted. It is wrong.

You do not jump. You turn around. You walk away. You walk home. You walk to your apartment. You unlock the door. You walk in. You close the door. You lock it.

You go to the kitchen. You open the cabinet. You take out a glass. You fill it with water. You drink it. It is cold. It is clean. You feel it go down your throat. You feel it fill your stomach.

You go to the bedroom. You get in bed. You pull the covers up. You close your eyes. You wait. You wait for the tremor. You wait for the pain. You wait for the end.

It does not come.

You sleep. You sleep deeply. You sleep without dreams. You sleep without fear. You sleep without self.

In the morning, you wake up. The sun is shining. The light is bright. You sit up. You look at your hand. It is steady. It is calm. It is yours.

You get out of bed. You go to the bathroom. You look in the mirror. Your face is pale. Your eyes are dark. But they are clear. You are you. You are alone. You are free.

You pick up your phone. You look at the name. Mark. You do not call him. You delete the number. You delete the file. You delete the memory. You delete the truth.

You dress. You put on your suit. You put on your tie. You look in the mirror. You smile. It is a small smile. It is a real smile.

You leave your apartment. You walk to the office. The city is busy. The people are moving. The cars are moving. The world is turning. You are part of it. You are a gear. You are a wheel. You are a piece.

You enter the office. The lobby is bright. The lights are on. The air is fresh. You take the elevator up. Floor ten. The doors open. You walk down the hall. Your footsteps echo. Tap. Tap. Tap.

You enter the server room. The fans are roaring. The heat is thick.

It is an unknown number.

You pick up.

"David?"

It is a new voice. It is a kind voice. It is a soft voice.

"I am here," you say.

"We have something for you. Something important. Come to the conference room."

You hang up. You stand up. You walk out. You walk into the conference room. The lights are bright. Too bright. A man is sitting there. He is wearing a suit. It is crisp. It is white. He looks tired. He looks happy.

"David," he says. "Come with me."

You follow him. You walk out of the conference room. You walk into the hall. You walk to the elevator. You go down. You go to the street.

The rain has started again. It is light. It is soft. It is a whisper. You stand in the rain. You let it fall on you. You let it wash you. You let it clean you.

You look at your hand. It is shaking. It is fine. It is constant. It is alive.

You smile. You close your eyes. You open them. The world is the same. The world is different. You are the same. You are different.

You walk into the rain. You walk into the dark. You walk into the light. You walk into yourself.
