The Distant Machine

The letter is dated. October the fourteenth. The ink is smudged where your thumb rested too long. You are reading it by candlelight. The wax has hardened on the floorboards. You are a warden. Or you were. Now you are a prisoner of the stone. The walls are old. They breathe. They do not care if you are there.

The keep is a mouth. It has swallowed you. It is swallowing the light.

You remember the day you came here. The air was thick with dust and decay. The archway was low. You had to bow. You thought it was a test. You passed. You were the best. You were the shield. You were the law.

They told you the system was broken. They said the gears were stuck. You said we will fix it. You said we will clean the rust. You said we will make it run again.

You were wrong.

The rust was the point.

You find the ledger. It is open on the desk. The paper is yellow. The edges are brittle. You run your finger over the names. James Whitmore. Eleanor Fairchild. Thomas Bradshaw. They are all dead. They are all gone. You wrote their names down. You signed the orders. You felt the weight of the pen. It felt like a sword. It felt like a key.

You did not know what it unlocked.

The mentor is dead. Old Edward Ashworth. He sat in this chair. He smelled of pipe tobacco and fear. He looked at you with eyes like polished glass. He said, “The machine does not break, boy. It grinds.”

You laughed then. You thought it was a joke. You thought he was tired. You thought he was afraid.

You were not afraid. You were strong. You were the hand on the wheel. You were the eye in the window.

Now the window is broken. Now the glass is on the floor. Now you are the one on the other side.

You stand up. Your knees crack. The sound is loud in the silent room. The candles flicker. The shadows dance. They look like hands. They look like teeth.

You walk to the door. It is heavy. It is iron. It is cold. You push it. It does not move. You push harder. Your hands bleed. The pain is sharp. It is real. It is the only thing that is real.

You remember the trial. The last one. Margaret Holloway. She stood in the center of the circle. She did not beg. She did not cry. She looked at you. She looked through you. She saw the man you were. She saw the man you had become.

She said, “You are the gear.”

You did not understand. You said, “The law is the law.”

She smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a kind smile. She said, “The law is the cage.”

Then the door closed. Then the wheel turned. Then the stone fell.

You did not see her face after that. You did not want to see it. You went back to your desk. You drank your tea. You wrote the report. You signed it. You felt nothing.

That was the first time.

The second time was different. The second time was louder. The second time was blood.

You were in the yard. The prisoners were screaming. The guards were shouting. The air was thick with smoke. You held your baton. You held it tight. Your fingers were white.

A man ran at you. He was tall. He was strong. He had eyes like fire. He did not look at you. He looked at the sky. He looked for something that was not there.

You hit him. You hit him again. You hit him until he fell. You hit him until he stopped moving.

You stood over him. You breathed hard. The sweat ran down your face. You looked at your hands. They were shaking.

You felt a surge of pride. You felt a surge of power. You felt like a god.

Then you felt the cold.

The cold started in your chest. It spread to your arms. It spread to your legs. It was the cold of the tomb. It was the cold of the void.

You realized you had killed him. You realized he was just a man. You realized you were just a tool.

The machine did not care. The machine kept turning.

The third time was the worst. The third time was yourself.

You were in the mirror. The mirror was cracked. Your face was broken. Your eyes were dead. You looked at the reflection. It did not look back.

You saw the truth. You saw the lie. You saw the cage.

You were not the warden. You were the key. You were the lock. You were the door.

You were the thing that was locked.

You tried to break the mirror. You threw your fist. The glass shattered. The shards cut your hand. The blood dripped. It looked like rain. It looked like tears.

You wiped the blood on your clothes. You cleaned the desk. You made your bed. You ate your food. You did what you were told.

You were good. You were obedient. You were the perfect part.

But the part was broken. The part was rusted. The part was worn.

The fourth time was the end. The fourth time was the silence.

You are in the cell. The cell is small. The cell is dark. The cell is yours.

The door opens. The light is bright. It hurts your eyes.

A man walks in. He is young. He is new. He is strong. He has eyes like fire. He has eyes like yours.

He looks at you. He sees the blood on your hand. He sees the fear in your eyes.

He says, “What happened?”

You do not answer. You cannot answer. The words are stuck in your throat. The words are stone.

You look at the wall. The wall is worn. The wall is old. The wall is the machine.

You think of Margaret. You think of the fire in the yard. You think of the mirror.

You think of the lesson.

The machine does not break. It grinds.

You look at the young man. You see the future. You see the cycle. You see the wheel turning.

You want to warn him. You want to scream. You want to break the wheel.

But you are the gear. You are the rust. You are the silence.

You smile. It is a sad smile. It is a kind smile.

You say, “The law is the law.”

The young man frowns. He does not understand. He is strong. He is brave. He is you.

He will break. He will grind. He will become the stone.

You close your eyes. The darkness comes. The darkness is warm. The darkness is quiet.

You are free. You are lost. You are home.

The letter ends. The candle burns low. The wax pools on the floor.

You fold the letter. You put it in your pocket.

You stand up. Your knees crack. The sound is loud.

You walk to the door. It is heavy. It is iron. It is cold.

You push it.

It opens.

The light is bright. The air is fresh. The world is waiting.

You step out.

You are the warden.

You are the prisoner.

You are the machine.

The wheel turns.

The stone falls.

The silence remains.

You walk down the hall. The shadows follow you. They are long. They are thin. They are like fingers.

You pass the cells. You see the faces. They are blank. They are empty. They are like mirrors.

You see yourself. You see the blood. You see the fear.

You do not stop. You do not look back.

You walk to the gate. The gate is open. The sky is gray. The rain is falling.

You step into the rain. The water is cold. The water is clean.

It washes the blood from your hands. It washes the dust from your face.

It does not wash the guilt.

It does not wash the truth.

The truth is in your bones. The truth is in your blood.

You are the machine.

You are the gear.

You are the rust.

And the wheel turns.

And the stone falls.

And the silence remains.

You are alone.

You are free.

You are lost.

You are home.

The end.
