The Distant Threshold
The iron gate was rusted shut. You stood before it, your hand resting on the cold metal, feeling the vibration of the earth beneath your feet. It hummed. A low, persistent drone that traveled up your arm and settled in your chest. You had walked for three days to get here. Your legs ached. Your skin was raw from the wind. You did not look back. There was nothing behind you worth looking at.
"Is it open?" you asked. Your voice sounded thin. It belonged to a stranger.
The gate did not open. It did not close. It simply existed, a barrier of oxidized steel against the grey sky. You pressed your shoulder against it. You pushed. The metal groaned. It was heavy. Heavier than it had any right to be. You pushed again. Your muscles burned. You thought of Thomas. You thought of his hands. How they had trembled when he held yours. How he had whispered your name like a prayer.
"Thomas," you said to the gate.
The wind picked up. It whistled through the bars. It sounded like a warning. You pulled your coat tighter. You were cold. You had been cold for a long time. The cold was not in the air. It was in your bones. It had been there since the first frost. Since the first crack in the mirror.
You stopped pushing. You sat down on the cold ground. You waited.
Hours passed. The sun moved across the sky. It was pale. It offered no warmth. You watched the shadows lengthen. They stretched out toward the gate. They seemed to reach for you. You did not move. You were still. You were a statue. A monument to patience.
Then, a voice.
"Are you there?"
You looked up. A woman stood behind the bars. She was old. Her face was a map of lines. Her eyes were dark. They watched you.
"Yes," you said.
"You have been here a long time."
"I am waiting."
"For what?"
"To enter."
She laughed. It was a dry sound. Like leaves scraping on stone.
"You cannot enter," she said. "Not yet. Not until you are ready."
"Ready for what?"
"For the truth."
You frowned. "I know the truth."
"Do you?"
"Yes. I know what I did."
"Everyone knows what they did," she said. "Few know what it means."
You looked at the gate. You looked at her. You felt a surge of anger. It was hot. It rose in your throat.
"Let me in," you said.
"No."
"Then let me out."
"There is no out."
You stood up. Your knees popped. You walked to the bars. You gripped them. The metal was cold. It bit into your skin.
"I am a warrior," you said. "I have fought for this."
"You have fought against yourself," she said. "That is a different kind of war."
"I will not stop."
"You must stop."
"I will break this gate."
"Break it, then."
You raised your fist. You swung. The metal rang. It was a clear, sharp note. It echoed in the air. You swung again. And again. Your hand bled. The blood was red. It was bright. It looked like life.
The woman watched. She did not flinch.
"Stop," you told yourself.
But you could not. The anger was a beast. It was inside you. It was eating you. You swung harder. The gate shook. The rust flaked off. It rained down on your shoulders. It was like ash.
You stopped. Your chest heaved. You looked at your hand. It was swollen. It was bruised. You looked at the gate. There was a dent. A small, dark mark.
"It is not enough," you whispered.
"No," the woman said. "It is never enough."
You fell back to the ground. You closed your eyes. You remembered Thomas. You remembered the way he looked at you. The way he smiled. It was a small smile. It did not reach his eyes. But it was enough. It was everything.
You had loved him. You had loved him with a ferocity that scared you. You had wanted to save him. You had wanted to keep him. You had tried to hold him in time. You had failed.
Time was a thief. It stole the days. It stole the years. It stole the people you loved. You had fought it. You had fought it with your fists. With your will. With your blood.
But time did not bleed. Time did not break.
You opened your eyes. The woman was gone. The gate was still there. It was silent. The wind had stopped. The air was still.
You looked at the dent in the gate. It was small. It was insignificant. But it was yours. It was the mark of your effort. Your struggle. Your failure.
You stood up. You walked away from the gate. You walked into the wilderness. The trees were bare. The ground was hard. You walked. You did not look back. You did not look forward. You looked at your feet. You looked at the dirt. You looked at the stones.
You were alone. You had always been alone.
You walked for another day. The sun set. The stars came out. They were bright. They were cold. You walked. Your legs ached. Your heart ached. You did not stop.
You reached a river. It was wide. It was dark. It flowed silently. You stood at the edge. You looked into the water. You saw your face. It was old. It was tired. It was yours.
You picked up a stone. It was heavy. It was smooth. You threw it. It skipped across the water. One, two, three. It sank.
You waited.
Nothing happened.
You picked up another stone. You threw it. It skipped. It sank.
You did this many times. You threw stones into the river. You watched them sink. You watched the ripples fade. You watched the water return to its calm.
You were throwing away your anger. You were throwing away your grief. You were throwing away your past.
You threw the last stone. It was small. It was grey. It sank without a sound.
You sat on the bank. You looked at the river. It was beautiful. It was indifferent. It did not care about you. It did not care about Thomas. It did not care about the gate.
It just flowed.
You realized something. You had been fighting the river. You had been trying to hold the water. You had been trying to stop the flow. You had been trying to keep the moment.
But you could not hold water. You could only let it go.
You closed your eyes. You let the tears fall. They were warm. They were wet. They mixed with the dust on your face. You let them fall. You did not fight them. You did not hold them back. You let them flow.
Like the river.
Like time.
Like love.
You opened your eyes. The sky was lightening. The sun was rising. It was pale. It was soft. It touched your face. It was warm.
You stood up. You looked toward the horizon. You could see a shape in the distance. It was a gate. It was iron. It was rusted.
It was the same gate.
You smiled. It was a small smile. It did not reach your eyes. But it was enough.
You walked toward it. Your steps were light. Your heart was quiet. You did not push. You did not fight. You did not swing.
You walked to the gate. You stood before it. You looked at it.
It was open.
The bars were wide. The path beyond was clear. It was a path of dirt. It was a path of stone. It was a path of memory.
You walked through.
You did not look back.
The gate closed behind you.
It did not clang. It did not groan. It simply closed. It was soft. It was silent. It was final.
You were inside.
You looked around. The place was empty. It was white. It was bright. There were no walls. There was no ceiling. There was only light.
You felt a weight lift from your shoulders. It was heavy. It was grey. It was iron.
You dropped it.
It fell. It did not make a sound. It disappeared.
You were free.
You were not saved. You were not redeemed. You were not forgiven.
You were just you.
You stood in the light. You felt the warmth. You felt the stillness. You felt the end.
You took a breath. It was deep. It was full. It was clean.
You exhaled.
The air was sweet.
You closed your eyes.
You were gone.
The light remained.
The gate remained.
The wilderness remained.
The river flowed.
Time continued.
You were part of it.
You were part of the flow.
You were part of the silence.
You were part of the end.
And that was enough.
That was everything.
You had fought.
You had failed.
You had lost.
You had loved.
You had let go.
You were free.
The end was not a door.
It was a breath.
It was a sigh.
It was a release.
It was a gift.
You had given it.
You had received it.
You had lived.
You had died.
You were both.
You were neither.
You were the space between.
You were the silence after the sound.
You were the peace after the war.
You were the light after the dark.
You were the truth.
You were the lie.
You were the story.
You were the teller.
You were the listener.
You were the end.
You were the beginning.
You were the now.
You were the here.
You were the always.
You were the never.
You were the one.
You were the many.
You were the self.
You were the other.
You were the same.
You were the different.
You were the whole.
You were the part.
You were the sum.
You were the difference.
You were the equation.
You were the answer.
You were the question.
You were the mystery.
You were the secret.
You were the open book.
You were the closed door.
You were the key.
You were the lock.
You were the fit.
You were the turn.
You were the click.
You were the open.
You were the free.
You were the light.
You were the dark.
You were the balance.
You were the harmony.
You were the peace.
You were the rest.
You were the sleep.
You were the wake.
You were the life.
You were the death.
You were the love.
You were the loss.
You were the gain.
You were the cost.
You were the price.
You were the value.
You were the worth.
You were the meaning.
You were the purpose.
You were the reason.
You were the why.
You were the how.
You were the what.
You were the who.
You were the where.
You were the when.
You were the when.
You were the when.
You were the when.
You were the when.
You were the when.
