The Distant Threshold

The iron gate screams. It is a sound like tearing meat. You stand in the mud. The mud is black. It sucks at your boots. You hold the manuscript. Your hands shake. The rain falls. It is cold. It is sharp. It bites through your wool coat. You are a scholar. You are old. Your back aches. But you are not alone. There are men. They are in armor. The armor is dented. The armor is bloodied. They are the court guard. They are here for you.

You look up. The sky is gray. It is heavy. It presses down. You see the tower. It is white. It is tall. It stands against the storm. It does not move. It has stood for a thousand years. It will stand for a thousand more. You know this. You have read the histories. You have mapped the stones. You know the tower is eternal. You know the tower does not care for men.

A voice calls out. It is loud. It is angry.

"Stop there."

You stop. Your feet sink deeper. The mud pulls. You pull free. You turn. You face them. There are three men. Their faces are hidden behind visors. Only their eyes are visible. The eyes are wet. The eyes are afraid. But they hold their spears. The spears are long. The spears are sharp.

"Who are you?" one asks.

"I am Dr. Elias Thorne."

You say your name. You say it clearly. You say it with dignity. You do not beg. You do not plead. You are a man of letters. You are a man of reason. But reason is dead here. Reason is dead in the war.

"Thorne." The voice is cold. "We have orders. Surrender the scroll."

You look at your hands. The scroll is wrapped in oilcloth. It is dry. It is safe. Inside is the map. You drew it yourself. You spent ten years drawing it. You walked the fields. You measured the roots. You listened to the wind. You found the truth. The truth is simple. The land is alive. The land remembers. The land knows the names of the dead. The land keeps the secrets of the court. The court knows. The court has always known. But the court is afraid. The court wants to bury the truth. The court wants to build a wall. The court wants to silence the earth.

"You cannot take it," you say.

Your voice is soft. It is quiet. But it carries. The rain fills the silence.

"Try," the guard says.

He steps forward. He is big. He is strong. He raises his sword. The sword glints. It is wet. It is ready. You do not move. You do not run. You are too old to run. Your legs are weak. Your heart is tired. But your spirit is hard. Your spirit is stone.

A shadow falls over you. It is not a man. It is a dog. It is a large dog. It is black. It is matted. It growls. The sound is low. The sound is deep. The dog looks at the guard. The dog looks at you. The dog knows you. You have fed it. You have spoken to it. The dog is the only friend you have. The dog is the only truth you have left.

"Kill it," the guard says.

He lifts his sword. He swings. The dog moves. It is fast. It is dark. It is a blur. The sword hits the dog. The dog screams. The sound is terrible. It is a sound of pain. It is a sound of death. The dog falls. It rolls in the mud. It does not get up.

You scream. You scream for the dog. You scream for the injustice. You scream for the cruelty. Your voice breaks. It is raw. It is broken. The tears come. They mix with the rain. You cannot tell them apart. You are not crying for the dog. You are crying for yourself. You are crying for the loss. You are crying for the end.

The guard steps over the dog. He steps on the fur. He steps on the blood. He comes to you. He grabs your arm. His grip is tight. It is painful. He pulls you. You stumble. You fall. You hit the ground. The mud covers your face. You taste it. It is bitter. It is metallic.

"Take the scroll," he says.

He rips it from your hands. He tears the oilcloth. He holds the paper. He looks at it. He does not know what it says. He does not care. He is just a tool. He is just a hand. The hand of the court. The hand of the power.

He rolls the paper. He puts it in a tube. He hands it to the other guard. The other guard takes it. He walks away. He walks into the rain. He walks toward the tower. The tower stands. The tower waits. The tower accepts the truth. The tower hides the truth.

You stay in the mud. You lie there. You look at the sky. The sky is still gray. The sky is still heavy. The rain continues. It does not stop. It never stops. You look at the dog. The dog is still. The dog is gone. The mud covers the dog. The mud covers the blood. The mud covers the pain.

You try to stand. Your legs do not work. Your arms are weak. You are broken. You are empty. You are hollow. You are a shell. You are a name. You are Dr. Elias Thorne. You are a scholar. You are a traitor. They will call you a traitor. They will say you stole the map. They will say you betrayed the king. They will say you sold the land. But they are wrong. You did not sell it. You gave it. You gave it to the land. You gave it to the earth. You gave it to the silence.

The guards leave. Their boots splash. The sound fades. The sound disappears. The silence returns. The silence is loud. The silence is heavy. The silence is full.

You look at the tower. It is white. It is tall. It is beautiful. It is cruel. It is eternal. It does not care for you. It does not care for the dog. It does not care for the rain. It is the threshold. It is the door. It is the end. You cannot go in. You cannot go out. You are stuck. You are caught. You are here.

You think of the past. You think of the library. You think of the books. The books are dry. The books are clean. The books are safe. You think of the students. You think of the questions. The questions are simple. The answers are complex. You think of the life. The life is short. The life is brief. The life is gone.

You think of the map. The map is in the tower. The map is in the vault. The map is under the stone. The map is with the dead. The map is with the roots. The map is with the water. The map is with the earth. The map is safe. The truth is safe. The truth is hidden. The truth is buried. The truth is sleeping.

You smile. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is a true smile. You are not angry. You are not afraid. You are not alone. You are with the rain. You are with the mud. You are with the dog. You are with the land. You are with the silence.

The rain falls. It falls on your face. It falls on your hair. It falls on your clothes. It washes you. It cleans you. It purifies you. It erases you. You are wet. You are cold. You are still.

You close your eyes. The darkness comes. The darkness is warm. The darkness is soft. The darkness is kind. You do not resist. You do not fight. You let it come. You let it take you. You let it hold you.

The tower stands. The tower watches. The tower remembers. The tower keeps. The tower waits. The tower is the threshold. The threshold is crossed. The threshold is closed. The threshold is done.

You are gone. The mud is still. The rain is still. The dog is still. The guard is gone. The scroll is gone. The map is gone. The truth is gone. The truth is here. The truth is everywhere. The truth is in the rain. The truth is in the mud. The truth is in the stone. The truth is in the silence. The truth is in you. The truth is in the land. The truth is in the air. The truth is in the time. The truth is in the end. The end is beginning. The beginning is end. The circle is closed. The circle is open. The circle is whole.

You breathe. The breath is deep. The breath is slow. The breath is last. The breath is first. The breath is now. The now is forever. The forever is now. The now is here. The here is you. You are here. You are now. You are here.

The rain stops. The sky clears. The sun comes. The sun is bright. The sun is gold. The sun is warm. The sun shines on the tower. The tower shines. The tower glows. The tower is white. The tower is bright. The tower is new. The tower is old. The tower is eternal.

You stand. You are not in the mud. You are not in the rain. You are not in the past. You are in the light. You are in the air. You are in the silence. You are in the truth. You are free. You are let go. You are released. You are released from the fear. You are released from the pain. You are released from the self.

You look at the tower. You do not see the stone. You see the spirit. You see the soul. You see the memory. You see the life. You see the death. You see the birth. You see the end. You see the beginning. You see the all. The all is one. The one is all. The all is you. You are all.

You walk. You walk toward the tower. You walk through the light. You walk through the air. You walk through the silence. You walk through the time. You walk through the space. You walk through the self. You walk through the world. You walk through the dream. You walk through the wake. You walk through the life. You walk through the death. You walk through the end. You walk through the beginning. You walk through the now. You walk through the forever. You walk through the here. You walk through the there. You walk through the nothing. You walk through the everything.

You arrive. You are at the door. The door is open. The door is closed. The door is you. You are the door. You are the threshold. You are the crossing. You are the passing. You are the going. You are the staying. You are the being. You are the nothing. You are the everything.

You step in. The light takes you. The light holds you. The light keeps you. The light is you. You are the light. The light is you. You are one. The one is you. You are all. The all is you. You are here. The here is you. You are now. The now is you. You are forever. The forever is you. You are end. The end is you. You are beginning. The beginning is you. You are life. The life is you. You are death. The death is you. You are silence. The silence is you. You are sound. The sound is you. You are rain. The rain is you. You are mud. The mud is you. You are stone. The stone is you. You are tree. The tree is you. You are bird. The bird is you. You are wind. The wind is you. You are earth. The earth is you. You are sky. The sky is you. You are sun. The sun is you. You are moon. The moon is you. You are star. The star is you. You are galaxy. The galaxy is you. You are universe. The universe is you.

You are you. You are here. You are now. You are real. You are true. You are free. You are whole. You are one. You are all. You are nothing. You are everything. You are. You are. You are.
