The door was open.

Mara saw it first. A gap of white light. Cold. Sharp.

She ran.

The floorboards shook. Dust fell from the ceiling.

"Go," she said.

Her daughter, Elise, did not move.

Elise stood in the center of the room. Her eyes were wide. Her lips were pale.

"Mom," Elise whispered.

Mara grabbed her arm. She pulled.

Elise was heavy. Not with weight. With stillness.

They were in the Hall. It was not the Hall they knew.

The walls were white. The floor was white. The ceiling was gone.

Above them, the sky was a churning ocean of grey and black. Clouds twisted like smoke. Lightning flashed. But there was no sound.

Only the light.

"Look up," Mara said. Her voice was thin.

Elise looked.

Mara looked.

The clouds were not clouds.

They were faces.

Thousands of them. Blurred. Screaming silently.

Mara felt a spike of fear. Cold. Deep.

She looked at Elise.

Elise was crying. No tears. Just sound. A low, continuous hum.

"We have to go," Mara said.

"Where?" Elise asked.

"I don't know."

"Find it."

Mara turned.

The Hall stretched out before them. Endless.

Doors lined the walls. Hundreds of them.

All white.

All closed.

Except one.

At the far end.

It was open.

Dark.

Mara started to walk.

Her legs felt wooden.

She walked.

The floor was soft. Like sand.

The light hummed.

Elise followed.

Silent.

Mara counted the doors.

One.

Two.

Three.

The faces in the sky watched.

Mara did not look up.

She could not.

If she looked, she would stop.

She had to keep moving.

The door was dark.

It was not a door.

It was a mouth.

Black.

Round.

Mara stopped.

"Elise," she said.

Elise stood behind her.

Close.

Too close.

"Mom," Elise said.

"Mara looked at the dark.

It breathed.

In.

Out.

A low vibration in her chest.

"I can't," Mara said.

"Go," Elise said.

Mara turned.

Elise’s face was calm.

Peaceful.

Wrong.

"Elise," Mara said. "We need to leave."

"No," Elise said.

"We have to go back."

"There is no back."

Mara’s heart hammered.

She reached for Elise.

Her hand passed through.

Not through air.

Through Elise.

Mara froze.

She pulled her hand back.

Elise was solid.

She was there.

But Mara’s hand had gone through.

"Elise?"

Elise smiled.

It was not her smile.

It was wide.

Too wide.

"Look," Elise said.

She pointed at the mouth.

Mara looked.

The darkness was moving.

It was opening.

Something was coming out.

Not a monster.

A light.

Blue.

Bright.

It hit Mara’s face.

She blinded.

She screamed.

The sound was sharp.

Piercing.

The Hall shook.

The walls cracked.

The faces in the sky fell.

One by one.

Like leaves.

Like ash.

They hit the floor.

Silent.

Mara fell to her knees.

The light faded.

The dark closed.

The mouth shut.

Silence.

Mara was alone.

Elise was gone.

Mara looked down.

Her hands were empty.

She looked around.

The Hall was gone.

She was in a room.

Small.

Dark.

Wooden walls.

A single window.

Rain on the glass.

She was in the attic.

The old house.

Her home.

Mara stood up.

Her knees shook.

She looked at her hands.

They were real.

Dirty.

Shaking.

She looked at the door.

It was closed.

She walked to it.

Her hand trembled.

She turned the knob.

It opened.

The hallway was dark.

The stairs were below.

She went down.

Step by step.

Her feet were bare.

Cold on the wood.

She reached the bottom.

The kitchen.

The light was on.

Yellow.

Warm.

Her mother sat at the table.

She was small.

Fragile.

Her white hair was loose.

She held a cup of tea.

Steam rose from it.

"Hello, Mara," her mother said.

Mara stopped.

Her breath caught.

"Mom," she said.

Her voice was a whisper.

"Sit," her mother said.

She did not look at Mara.

She looked at the tea.

Mara sat.

The chair was hard.

Cold.

"Are you hurt?" her mother asked.

"No."

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

Her mother nodded.

She drank her tea.

Slowly.

Mara watched her.

The steam curled in the air.

"Where is Elise?" Mara asked.

Her mother set the cup down.

"Safe," she said.

Mara felt a surge of hope.

Hot.

Bright.

"Where?"

"Here," her mother said.

She pointed to the window.

Mara looked.

The rain was gone.

The sky was clear.

Stars.

Bright.

Sharp.

"Elise is in the stars," her mother said.

Mara shook her head.

"No."

"She is free," her mother said.

Mara felt a pain.

Deep.

Sharp.

In her chest.

"Mom," she said.

Her voice broke.

"I lost her."

Her mother looked at her.

Her eyes were kind.

Sad.

"You did not lose her," she said.

"You let her go."

Mara looked down.

Her hands were still shaking.

She remembered the light.

The cold.

The silence.

She remembered Elise’s smile.

Too wide.

Wrong.

She had let her go.

She had not pulled her back.

She had watched.

She had chosen.

Not the girl.

The light.

The truth.

Mara closed her eyes.

Tears fell.

Hot.

Fast.

"I didn't know," she said.

"I didn't know what it was."

"I didn't know what I was."

Her mother reached out.

She touched Mara’s hand.

Warm.

Solid.

Real.

"It is okay," her mother said.

"It is done."

Mara opened her eyes.

The kitchen was quiet.

The clock on the wall ticked.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Time.

It moved.

Forward.

Always.

Mara looked at her mother.

Her mother’s face was peaceful.

She was not afraid.

She was not angry.

She was just there.

Waiting.

Mara felt a shift.

Inside.

Small.

Quiet.

The pain was still there.

But it was different.

It was not a hole.

It was a scar.

It was part of her.

She could carry it.

She could live with it.

She did not need to fix it.

She did not need to undo it.

She just had to breathe.

Mara took a breath.

In.

Out.

The air was cool.

It filled her lungs.

She felt alive.

"Mom," she said.

"Yes?"

"Thank you."

Her mother smiled.

It was small.

Real.

"You are welcome, my love."

Mara stood up.

Her legs were steady.

She walked to the door.

She opened it.

The night was outside.

Dark.

Quiet.

She stepped out.

The air was cold.

It hit her face.

She looked up.

The stars.

Bright.

Sharp.

One of them was brighter than the others.

Blue.

Faint.

She looked at it.

For a long time.

Then she looked away.

She turned back to the house.

The light was on.

Yellow.

Warm.

She went in.

The door closed behind her.

Silence.

Mara stood in the hallway.

She was alone.

But she was not lonely.

She was here.

She was real.

The pain was there.

It would always be there.

But it was hers.

And she could carry it.

She walked to the stairs.

Step by step.

Up.

To the bedroom.

The bed was made.

The sheets were cool.

She lay down.

She closed her eyes.

She did not sleep.

She waited.

For the morning.

For the sun.

For the day to begin.

It would come.

It always came.

Mara breathed.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

The dark was not empty.

It was full.

Full of memory.

Full of love.

Full of loss.

She held it.

Tight.

Then she let it go.

Not away.

Just... loose.

She was Mara.

She was alive.

And that was enough.

The clock ticked.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Time.

Moving.

Forward.

Always.
