Carteret did not knock. He opened the gate and walked up the gravel path to Oakhaven's porch, where the columns were leaning at angles that would have made an architect weep. He was a thin man with thin lips and a briefcase that contained the death certificate of my family.

"Mr. Whitfield," he said. Not "Seolas." Not "cousin." Mr. Whitfield. As if we were strangers. As if the last time I had seen him, he had been at my grandmother's funeral, standing at the back of the crowd in a suit that was too big for his narrow shoulders.

The third was the mystery. A man in a dark suit who arrived without introduction and stood at the tree line, watching us with the patience of a snake. He never spoke. He never moved. On the sixteenth day, we hit something.

Carteret arrived that afternoon. He had brought the final notice from the bank: Oakhaven had been foreclosed. The auction was in forty-eight hours.

"I knew you would find it," he said. Not a question. A statement.

"Knew what?" I asked.

"That you would find your family's sin." He opened his briefcase and removed a copy of the diary. "I have had this since yesterday morning. I knew you would dig. Men like your grandfather always dig when they are cornered. The question is: what will you do with what you find?"

The three creditors gathered on the morning of the auction. Harlan stood with his one arm crossed over his chest. Price sat in his Packard with a briefcase full of cash. The man in the dark suit stood at the tree line, as he always had.

Carteret read the terms. Price bid first—ten thousand. Harlan said nothing. The man in the dark suit said nothing. I said nothing.

Vivian stepped forward. She was wearing a dress that had been her mother's, shoes that had been her grandmother's, and a dignity that had been her own.

"I bid," she said.

Carteret looked at her. "Miss Vivian, you have no funds."

"I am bidding something Price cannot bid," she said. "The truth."

She held up the ledger. "This property was built on slavery. Every dollar of value in this soil came from the labour of people who were owned. If this land is sold to the highest bidder, I will take these documents to the newspaper in Jackson. Every name, every price, every photograph. The Whitfield name will not just be dead. Price's face went white. In this county, reputation was everything. A Whitfield scandal would destroy half the families in three counties.

Harlan spoke for the first time. His voice was rough, unused. "I fought in a war to keep people like you in chains. And now you're going to use their names to save your house?" He shook his head. "No. Let it burn."

The man in the dark suit finally moved. He walked to the edge of the auction circle and placed a envelope on Carteret's briefcase. "I represent the state historical society," he said. "We would like to acquire these documents for preservation. They are too important to be used as a weapon. They should be used as a record."

Vivian looked at me. I looked at Vivian.

We took the envelope.

Oakhaven was auctioned the next day. Price bought it for twelve thousand dollars. He will discover, I expect, that a plantation built on slavery is difficult to operate in the twentieth century. The hands who worked the land will not return. The soil is exhausted. The world has moved on.

Vivian left her husband. She and I moved to Memphis, where she sings in a church choir and I work in a warehouse. The documents are in a vault in Jackson, where historians can read them and remember.

Sometimes, on hot Mississippi nights, I dream of the oak trees. They are standing in a row, their branches heavy with Spanish moss, and beneath them, in the dark earth, the iron box is still waiting.

Not for gold. For truth.

And truth, like an oak tree, outlives everything.
