The Distant Machine

The letter is sealed with wax the color of dried blood. You hold it in your hand. The wax is warm. It smells of smoke and old iron. You are in the keep. The stones are cold against your back. Outside, the wind howls. It tears at the shutters. It screams in the dark. You do not look up. You know who sent it. You know what it says.

Your father is dead.

He died in the valley. They say he fell. They say the mud took him. But you know the truth. The truth is a stone in your throat. You cannot swallow it. You cannot speak it. You are a knight. You serve the Crown. You wear the silver on your breast. You carry the heavy sword. You are the shield of the realm. Or so they say.

Your father was the King’s right hand. He was the strongest. He was the most loyal. He never questioned. He never hesitated. He died for the flag. Or so they say.

You look at the letter again. The wax cracks under your thumb. A small sound. Sharp and final. You break the seal. You unfold the paper. The ink is faded. The words are blurred. But you can read them. You have read them in your mind a thousand times.

*My Son,*

*The body is failing. The mind is clear. I see the end. It is not fear. It is peace. I have done my duty. I have protected the throne. I have protected you. Do not seek vengeance. It is a pitfall. It is a lie. The system holds. The King is safe. You are safe. Let it go. Love the stone. Love the duty. It is the only thing that remains.*

You fold the letter. You put it in your pocket. You stand up. Your legs are stiff. Your joints ache. The old pain. The pain that lives in your bones. It has been with you for years. It whispers to you. It tells you to run. It tells you to break.

You do not break. You are the mirror. You reflect the strength. You reflect the silence. You walk to the window. The glass is thick. It is stained with grime. You press your face against it. The cold bites your skin. You see the courtyard below. It is empty. The moon is high. It is a pale coin. It hangs in the sky.

There is a knock at the door.

It is soft. Gentle. You know who it is. It is Sir Thomas. Your ally. Your friend. He has been by your side for ten years. He has bled with you. He has laughed with you. He is the only one who knows the weight of the sword. He is the only one who sees the crack in the armor.

You open the door.

Thomas stands there. He is tall. He is broad. His face is lined. His eyes are tired. He holds a bottle of wine. He holds a cloth. He does not speak. He looks at you. He looks at your eyes. He sees the death in them.

"Inside," he says. His voice is low. It is rough. Like gravel.

You step back. He enters. The door closes behind him. The lock clicks. It is a small sound. It is final.

He pours the wine. The liquid is dark. It swirls in the cup. He hands it to you. You take it. You do not drink. You hold it in your hand. The warmth seeps into your palm.

"He is gone," Thomas says.

You nod. You say nothing.

"They will bury him tomorrow," Thomas says. "In the crypt. With the others."

You nod again.

"You look like him," Thomas says. "Same jaw. Same eyes. Same silence."

You look at him. You see the pain in his face. You see the fear. He is afraid for you. He knows what you might do. He knows the rage that simmers in your blood.

"I am not him," you say. Your voice is quiet. It is steady.

"No," Thomas says. "You are not. He was a man. You are a monument."

You laugh. It is a dry sound. It is bitter.

"A monument," you repeat. "Yes. That is what I am. That is what I was always meant to be. Stone. Cold. Unmoving."

Thomas puts his hand on your shoulder. His grip is firm. It is heavy.

"Listen to me," he says. "The King is weak. He is old. He is sick. The council is hungry. They want power. They want blood. If you react. If you show weakness. They will take it. They will use it. They will break you."

"I am not weak," you say.

"Then do not let them see the wound," Thomas says. "Heal it. Hide it. Become the stone. Become the wall. It is the only way to save what remains."

You look at the wine. The surface is still. It reflects the candlelight. It reflects your face. You see your own eyes. They are dark. They are deep. They are empty.

"My father asked me to let it go," you say.

"Did he?" Thomas asks.

"Yes. He said it was a lie."

Thomas is silent. He looks at the floor. He looks at the shadows.

"Sometimes," he says slowly. "The lie is the only truth that holds."

You drink the wine. It burns your throat. It burns your chest. It is sweet. It is bitter. It is fire. You drink it all. You set the cup down. Your hand is steady.

"Thank you," you say.

Thomas nods. He picks up the bottle. He picks up the cloth. He walks to the door. He stops. He turns to you.

"Tomorrow," he says. "You must stand at the funeral. You must be the shield. You must be the sword. You must be the image. Do not falter."

"I will not falter," you say.

He leaves. The door closes. The lock clicks. You are alone.

The silence returns. It is heavy. It is thick. It presses against your ears. You walk to the mirror. You look at yourself. You see the armor. You see the steel. You see the man beneath. The man is tired. The man is broken. The man is gone.

You touch your face. The skin is dry. The cheekbones are sharp. You are becoming the stone. You are becoming the place. You are the keep. You are the wall. You are the guard.

You think of your father. You think of his hand. You think of his voice. You think of the day he taught you to hold the sword. He said, *The sword does not ask. The sword does not feel. The sword protects.*

You realize the truth. It is not a lie. It is a sacrifice. It is a redemption. To be the stone is to save the house. To be the wall is to hold the sky. To be the guard is to keep the light.

Your father did not die for nothing. He died so you could be the stone. He died so the house could stand. He died so you could be free. Free of feeling. Free of pain. Free of the human weakness that breaks the soul.

You feel a strange calm. It is cold. It is clear. It is like the air in the crypt. It is like the silence after the storm.

You pick up the letter. You hold it to the candle flame. The paper curls. The ink blurs. The wax melts. The letter burns. The ashes fall. They are gray. They are light. They drift to the floor.

You watch them fall. You feel no regret. You feel no sorrow. You feel only the duty. You feel the weight. You feel the strength.

You are the distant machine. You are the mechanism. You are the gear. You turn. You turn. You turn.

The next day, the sun is bright. The sky is blue. The birds sing. The court gathers. The King sits on the throne. He is pale. He is thin. He looks at you. He sees the steel. He sees the silence. He nods.

You stand at the head of the table. You wear the silver. You carry the sword. Your face is still. Your eyes are cold. You are the mirror. You reflect the power. You reflect the order.

Your father’s body is carried in. It is covered in black. It is still. It is silent. The priest speaks. The words are hollow. The sounds are flat. You do not listen. You do not see. You are the stone.

The casket is lowered. The earth is thrown. The hole is filled. The grass is green. The stone is placed.

It is done.

You walk away. Your steps are measured. Your breath is controlled. Your heart is steady. You are the wall. You are the guard. You are the sacrifice.

You have let it go. You have become the thing. You have saved the house. You have redeemed the blood.

The machine works. The machine turns. The machine endures.

You are alone. But you are not lonely. You are full. You are complete. You are the stone.
