The Distant Nightmare

The iron gate is cold. It bites into your palm. You do not let go.

The village is asleep. Or it is dead. The distinction is academic here. The fog rolls in thick, a gray wool that swallows the spires. You hold the lantern. It is a heavy thing. Brass and glass. The glass is cracked. The brass is tarnished. It has been with you for thirty years.

You are a prisoner. Not in a cell. In the light.

The doors open. Creaking. Slow. A hinge screams in the dark.

"Enter," says the Voice. It is not a voice. It is the wind through a keyhole.

You step inside. The floor is stone. Wet. Slipped. You grip the lantern tighter. The crack spreads. A hairline fracture. A tiny bleed of light.

They are waiting. Three figures. Robed. Faces hidden. The fabric is coarse. Wool. It smells of damp earth and old blood.

"Who are you?" you ask. Your voice is thin. A thread.

"We are the keepers," the first says.

"Of what?"

"Of the debt."

You look at the lantern. The flame flickers. It is weak. It is dying. You know this. You have always known this. The oil is low. The wick is black.

"I am here to pay," you say.

"Payment is not a thing," the second says.

"Then what is it?"

"Time."

The third figure steps forward. It smells of lavender. A sharp, clean scent. It cuts through the damp.

"Your father," the third says.

Your breath catches. The air is thin.

"He is here," the figure says.

"No," you say. "He is dead. He died in the snow. I buried him. I watched the snow cover the wood."

"Burial is a metaphor," the figure says.

The lantern shakes in your hand. The crack widens. A drop of oil falls. It hits the stone. A sizzle. A hiss.

"You broke the seal," the first figure says.

"I did nothing."

"You held the light. You kept it burning. You refused to let it go out. That is the crime."

The room is cold. The cold is inside you. It is in your bones.

"My father wanted it out," you say.

"Your father wanted rest," the figure says. "You wanted to watch."

You think of the night. The snow. The wood. The smell of woodsmoke. His hands. Blue. Stiff. You held him. You held him for hours. You did not let go. You kept the fire in the hearth. You kept the light in the window. You watched the door. You waited for him to come back.

He did not come back.

But the light stayed.

The lantern grows heavier. It is an anchor. It is a chain. It is a mirror.

"You are the prisoner," the first figure says.

"I am the guard," you reply.

"No. You are the one who refuses to open the door."

The second figure moves. It is close. Too close.

"Open it," the figure says.

"I cannot."

"Try."

You try. The handle is ice. The wood is warped. It does not move.

"Why?" the third figure asks.

"Because if I open it, the dark will come in."

"The dark is already here," the first says. "The dark is you."

You look at the lantern. The flame is low. It is a small, orange eye. It looks at you. It knows.

"I loved him," you say.

"Love is not a shield," the third says.

"Love is a lock."

"Then break the lock."

You shake your head. No. If you break it, you are nothing. If you break it, the night takes you. You are the light. You are the fire. You are the only thing keeping the cold at bay.

The figures are silent. They watch. They wait.

The crack in the glass is wide now. The light spills out. It is sharp. It is jagged.

"Look," the second says.

You look.

The lantern is empty. There is no oil. There is no flame. There is only the glass. And the brass. And the crack.

You are holding nothing.

The weight is gone.

The cold is gone.

The room is empty. The figures are gone. The stone floor is bare.

You are alone.

You drop the lantern. It hits the ground. It does not break. It is just metal. Just glass. Just a thing.

You stand up. Your knees are stiff. Your back is sore. You are old. You are so old.

The door is open. The fog is thick. The village is there. The spires. The streets. The quiet.

You step out. The air is cold. It is sharp. It is clean.

You walk. Your feet are heavy. Your hands are empty.

You do not look back.

There is nothing to look back at.

The lantern is on the floor. The crack is a scar. It is a line. It is a memory.

You walk into the fog. The fog takes you. It does not bite. It does not hold. It lets you go.

You are free.

The freedom is terrible. It is vast. It is empty.

You are no one. You are no one's keeper. You are no one's prisoner.

You are just a man. Walking. In the dark.

The dark is not evil. The dark is not good. The dark is just the absence of light. And you are the light. And the light is gone.

You are the dark.

You are the shadow.

You are the truth.

The truth is simple. You stayed. You stayed because you could not bear to be alone. You stayed because the light gave you a purpose. You stayed because you were afraid.

You are not afraid anymore.

The fear is gone. The guilt is gone. The love is gone.

What is left?

Nothing.

And that is enough.

You walk. The fog lifts. The sun is rising. It is weak. It is pale. It is gray.

It is real.

You see the village. The houses. The chimneys. Smoke. Life.

You see a child. A boy. He is small. He is red. He is cold.

He looks at you. His eyes are wide. They are dark. They are deep.

"Grandfather?" he asks.

You stop. You look at him. You know him. You do not know him.

"Yes," you say.

Your voice is steady. Your hands are still.

"Come," you say. "The night is over."

He does not move. He waits.

You reach out. Your hand is open. Your palm is flat.

He takes your hand.

It is warm. It is small. It is strong.

You walk together. The fog parts. The sun rises. The light is real. It is bright. It is hard.

It does not hurt.

You are not the prisoner. You are not the keeper. You are the father. You are the son. You are the man who let go.

The lantern is behind you. It is a thing. It is a memory. It is a lesson.

You do not look back.

You walk forward. Into the light. Into the day. Into the life.

The end is a beginning. The beginning is a choice. The choice is to be here. Now. Alive.

The shadow is long. It stretches out behind you. It is yours. You accept it. You carry it.

It is light.

The story is done. The door is open. The key is in the lock.

You are free.

The nightmare is over.

You are awake.

The light is bright.

The light is real.

You are here.

You are now.

You are alive.

The end.
