The Distant Legend
The iron gate is open.
You are bleeding from the left cheek. The blood is hot. It stings. You wipe it away. The red smear is bright against your pale skin. You do not flinch. You never flinch.
The hall is long. It is dark. The torches sputter in the draft. The air smells of wet stone and old fear. You walk down the center aisle. Your boots clang on the flagstones. The sound is sharp. It cuts the silence.
They are waiting.
Three men. They wear the grey coats of the Wardens. Their faces are hidden behind hoods. They hold their pikes low. The metal glints. It is a dull, sickly light.
"Stop," one says. His voice is rough. It scrapes like sand on wood.
You stop. You do not breathe. You look at the pikes. You look at the hands that hold them. They are trembling. Just a little. But you see it.
"Who are you?" the first Warden asks.
"I am Thomas Bradshaw," you say. Your voice is steady. It is a low rumble. "I am the Captain of the West Gate."
"That name is dead," the second Warden says. He steps forward. The hem of his coat brushes the stone. "The Council has spoken. You are a traitor. You are a beast."
"I protected the people," you say.
"You protected the chaos," the third one whispers. He is young. You can see the fear in his eyes. It is wide. It is raw. "The King is dead. The Council rules. Order is required. Order is peace."
"Peace is a lie," you say.
The first Warden raises his hand. The pikes lower. They form a circle. It is tight. It is perfect.
"Draw your sword," the first Warden says.
You draw it. The steel sings. It is a high, clear note. It hangs in the air. The light catches the edge. It is sharp. It is honest.
You are alone.
The three are many.
The iron gate is open behind you. You could run. The night is cold. The wind is howling. You could disappear. You could vanish into the dark.
But you do not run.
You step forward.
The first Warden lunges. The pike thrusts. You sidestep. It is a small movement. It is quick. The pike misses your shoulder by an inch. You feel the wind of the shaft. It is cold.
You strike back.
Your sword cuts the air. It connects with the first Warden’s arm. The leather glove tears. The pike falls. It clatters on the stone. It rolls away.
The second Warden swings. His pike is heavy. It is slow. You see the motion before it happens. You duck. The shaft whistles over your head. It is close. Too close.
You spin. Your sword flashes. It cuts the second Warden’s leg. He screams. It is a short, sharp cry. It is not a battle cry. It is a pain cry. He falls. He hits the ground. He does not get up.
The third Warden is left.
The young one.
He stands still. He does not move. His pike is raised. It is shaking. His eyes are locked on yours. They are wide. They are full of tears.
"Kill him," he whispers. His voice is breaking. "Please. I must kill him. Or I am dead."
You look at him. You do not attack. You wait.
The torches flicker. The shadows dance on the walls. They are long. They are thin. They reach for you.
"I will not hurt you," you say. Your voice is soft. It is tired. "Drop the pike."
"I cannot," he says. "The Council watches. I must obey."
"The Council is gone," you say.
"No," he says. He shakes his head. "The Council is the law. The law is the state. The state is eternal. You are the error. You are the mistake. We must correct the mistake."
"You are a boy," you say.
"I am a Warden," he says. "I am the arm of justice."
"Justice is a blade without a hand," you say. "It cuts only in the dark."
The boy raises the pike. He screams. It is a wail. It is high. It is desperate.
He thrusts.
You do not dodge.
The pike enters your side.
The pain is white. It is hot. It is immediate. You gasp. The air leaves your lungs. You do not fall. You stand. You grip the pike with your left hand. You pull it out.
Blood sprays. It is hot. It is red. It splatters on the boy’s face. It splatters on the hood. He freezes. He stares at the red on his skin.
"You..." he starts.
You raise your sword.
You could kill him. You could cut his throat. You could end this. It is so easy. The anger is there. It is deep. It is old. It lives in your bones.
But you do not kill him.
You step forward. You put the point of your sword under his chin. It is not a threat. It is a fact.
"Go," you say.
"Go?" he asks. His voice is a whisper. It is small. It is broken.
"Go," you say. "Tell the Council. Tell them Thomas Bradshaw is dead. Tell them the traitor is slain. Tell them the order is restored."
He looks at you. He looks at the blood on his face. He looks at the pike in your hand. It is stained red.
"Why?" he asks.
"Because I am not the enemy," you say. "I am the wall. And walls do not fight. They hold."
He drops the pike. It clatters on the stone. The sound is final.
He turns. He runs. His feet slap on the floor. It is fast. It is frantic. He disappears into the darkness. He is gone.
You are alone.
The pain is growing. It is spreading. It is moving through your chest. It is moving down your arms. Your vision blurs. The edges of the world are soft.
You lean on your sword. The steel is cold. It is the only thing that is solid.
You think of your son.
He is eight. He has your eyes. He has your hands. He is small. He is quiet. He waits for you to come home. He waits for the iron gate to open. He waits for the father who promised he would always return.
He will not return.
The lie is simple. It is clean. It is white.
The Council will say you died in battle. They will say you died for the state. They will say you were a hero. They will bury you in the crypt. They will put a stone on your chest. They will write your name in gold.
They will lie.
They will always lie.
The truth is dirt. The truth is blood. The truth is the weight of the iron.
The torches die. One by one. The flame gutters. It sputters. It goes out. The dark rushes in. It is thick. It is heavy. It presses against your skin.
You fall to your knees.
The stone is cold. It bites into your skin. It is hard. It is unyielding.
You look up.
The iron gate is open.
The night is there. It is vast. It is empty. The wind howls. It is a low, mournful sound. It sounds like a ghost. It sounds like a mother.
You close your eyes.
You do not fight the dark. You let it in. It is warm. It is soft. It is the only thing that is true.
You think of the legend. The old story. The king who fought the dragon. The dragon was not a monster. The dragon was the king’s shadow. The king killed the shadow. And then the king became the shadow.
You are the shadow now.
The system is the dragon. It is big. It is strong. It eats the light. It eats the hope. It eats the men who try to stand up.
You tried to stand up.
And the system ate you.
But you did not scream. You did not beg. You did not break.
You held.
The pain fades. It becomes distant. It becomes a hum. It is a low note. It is a chord.
You are not dead. You are not alive. You are between. You are in the gap. You are in the space where the truth lives.
The Council will wake tomorrow. They will open the gate. They will find you. They will see the blood. They will see the pike. They will see the sword.
They will be afraid.
Not of you. Of the idea. The idea that a man can hold. The idea that a man can refuse. The idea that the state is not eternal.
They will bury the idea. They will bury you with it.
But the idea is not in the stone. The idea is in the air. The idea is in the wind. The idea is in the memory of the boy who ran.
He will remember.
He will remember the blood on his face. He will remember the sword under his chin. He will remember the silence.
He will carry it. He will carry it in his chest. It will burn. It will ache. It will never go away.
He will be a Warden. He will wear the grey coat. He will hold the pike.
But he will know.
He will know that the iron gate can be open. He will know that the dark can be cold. He will know that the man who held the wall was not a monster.
He will know that the system is a lie.
And that is enough.
The wind howls.
The dark is complete.
You are at peace.
The iron gate is open.
The legend is dead.
The truth remains.
