The Distant Threshold

The sword is in your hand. It is wet. Not with rain. With blood. It is old blood. The color of rust. The color of dried roses. The air is thin. It tastes of iron and ozone. You are in the Hall of Mirrors. Or perhaps the Hall of Ghosts. The walls are made of silver. The floor is made of ice. But the ice does not break. It holds. It waits.

You are a soldier. You have always been a soldier. Your name is Thomas. Thomas Bradshaw. But here, names are heavy. They drag. You leave yours behind. You are only the arm. The eye. The will.

Across the hall stands the enemy. He is tall. He wears armor of black glass. He does not breathe. He does not blink. His face is a smooth mask. It reflects your face. It reflects your fear. It reflects your doubt.

You strike. The sword sings. It is a high note. A clear note. The black glass cracks. A spiderweb of white lines. The enemy does not fall. He steps back. He does not bleed. He smiles. The smile is wrong. It is too wide. It is too long.

You are the Ally. You are the shield. You protect the truth. Or so you think. You have spent years believing this. You have bled for this belief. You have broken bones for this belief. You have killed men who looked at you with suspicion. You killed them because they were wrong. You were right. You are always right. That is the rule. That is the law. The law of the sword. The law of the clear line. Good is light. Evil is dark. You are the light.

But the light is flickering.

The enemy speaks. His voice is like grinding stones. Like dry leaves skittering on pavement.

"You do not know what you fight," he says.

You laugh. It is a cold laugh. A sharp laugh.

"I know exactly what I fight," you say. "I fight the lie."

The enemy nods. He raises his hand. His fingers are long. They are thin. They point at your chest. At the heart.

"Look," he says.

You look down. You see the sword in your hand. You see the blood on the blade. You realize the blood is not black. It is red. It is your blood. You are wounded. You did not feel the cut. You did not feel the pain. Pain is a distraction. Pain is a weakness. You have trained it away. You have beaten it down.

You look up. The enemy is closer. He is very close. You can see the reflection of your own eyes in his mask. Your eyes are wide. Your eyes are wild. They are the eyes of a beast.

You swing again. You are faster now. You are desperate. The sword bites into the black glass. It shatters. The mask falls away. Beneath it is not a face. It is a void. A dark hole. It is empty. It is nothing.

And yet. It looks like you.

You freeze. Your hand drops. The sword clatters to the ice floor. The sound is loud. It echoes. It bounces off the silver walls. It becomes a drumbeat. Thump. Thump. Thump.

The void does not speak. It does not threaten. It simply is. It waits.

You remember the mission. You remember the order. You were sent to capture the traitor. The traitor who stole the King’s crown. The crown is gold. It is heavy. It is real. The void is light. It is airy. It is false. You must capture the false. You must destroy the lie.

You pick up the sword. Your hand shakes. The shake is small. It is a tremor. It travels up your arm. It enters your chest. It settles in your heart.

"I will not let you win," you whisper.

The void smiles. It does not have a mouth. But you see the smile. It is the smile you wear when you kill. It is the smile you wear when you are sure. It is the smile of the victor.

You attack. You do not stop. You do not think. You strike. And strike. And strike. The air turns red. The silver walls stain red. The ice floor turns red. The red is thick. It is warm. It is alive.

You are drowning in it.

The void is gone. You are alone. The hall is empty. The walls are covered in blood. Your blood. The sword is in your hand. It is dull. It is broken. It is useless.

You fall to your knees. The ice is cold. It bites into your skin. You do not care. You close your eyes. You listen.

There is a sound. It is soft. It is distant. It is a voice.

"Thomas."

You open your eyes.

You are in a field. The grass is green. The sky is blue. The sun is warm. It is summer. The air smells of hay and rain.

You are sitting on a hill. The hill is gentle. It slopes down to a river. The water is clear. It moves slowly. It is peaceful.

Beside you sits a man. He is old. His hair is white. His face is lined. His hands are rough. They are the hands of a farmer. They are the hands of a friend.

His name is Edward. Edward Ashworth.

You have known him for thirty years. You served with him. You fought with him. You bled with him. You are brothers. In all ways that matter.

He looks at you. His eyes are kind. They are sad.

"You are back," he says.

"Where was I?" you ask.

You do not know where you were. You do not remember the hall. You do not remember the sword. You do not remember the void. You only remember the red. The thick, warm red.

Edward does not answer. He picks up a stone. He is smooth. He is grey. He holds it in his palm. He looks at it. He looks at you.

"We had a fight," he says. "A long time ago."

You remember. You remember the camp. The fire. The smoke. The other men. They pointed at you. They whispered. They called you traitor. They said you had spoken to the enemy. They said you had taken gold. They said you were weak. They said you were afraid.

You were not afraid. You were angry. You were hurt. You struck one of them. He fell. He did not get up. He died.

You ran. You ran into the forest. You ran for days. You ran until your feet bled. You ran until you could not run anymore. You sat down. You waited to die.

But you did not die. Edward found you. He brought you water. He brought you food. He did not ask why you ran. He did not ask who you killed. He simply sat beside you. He held your hand. He let you cry.

You did not cry. You are a soldier. You do not cry.

But you wept. Inside. Deep inside. Where the soul is.

"You killed him," Edward says now. His voice is low. "You killed the man who accused you."

You nod. You do not look at him. You look at the river. The water flows. It does not stop. It does not judge. It just goes.

"It was self-defense," you say. The words are dry. They are hard. They are stones.

"Was it?" Edward asks.

You look at him. You see the truth in his face. You see the doubt. You see the pity.

"I am a soldier," you say. "I protect. I defend. I kill when I must."

"Must," Edward repeats. "Did you must?"

You have no answer. The silence grows. It is heavy. It is thick. It presses against your chest.

You think of the hall. The silver walls. The black glass. The void. You think of the blood. Your blood. The enemy was you. The lie was you. The traitor was you. You have been fighting yourself for thirty years. You have been protecting a lie. You have been defending a ghost.

The ghost is your pride. The ghost is your certainty. The ghost is the belief that you are good. That you are right. That the line is clear.

But the line is not clear. The line is blurred. The line is bleeding.

You look at Edward. He is waiting. He is patient. He is kind. He is the anchor. He is the friend who stays.

"I was wrong," you say. The words are small. They are quiet. They are true.

Edward nods. He does not smile. He does not frown. He simply nods.

"It is late," he says. "We should go home."

You stand up. Your legs are weak. Your knees are stiff. The grass is soft under your feet. The sun is setting. The sky is orange. The sky is purple. The sky is beautiful.

You take a step. Then another. You walk with Edward. You do not speak. You do not need to. The silence is comfortable. It is warm. It is safe.

You walk down the hill. You walk to the river. You walk to the village. The village is small. It is quiet. The houses are made of stone. The chimneys smoke. The dogs bark. The children play.

You are home.

But you are not the man you were. The soldier is gone. The warrior is gone. The man in the black glass is gone.

You are only Thomas. Thomas Bradshaw. A man with blood on his hands. A man with a broken heart. A man with a friend.

You enter the house. It is old. It is dark. It smells of wood and bread. A fire burns in the hearth. The light is yellow. The light is warm.

Edward sits by the fire. He looks at you. He offers you a cup. You take it. Your hands shake. The tea is hot. It is bitter. It is good.

You drink. You feel the warmth. It spreads. It heals. It does not erase. It does not forget. It simply holds.

You look out the window. The night is falling. The stars are coming out. They are bright. They are far. They are cold.

You look at your hands. They are clean. The blood is gone. The red is gone. The hall is gone.

You are here. You are now. You are free.

The freedom is heavy. The freedom is light. It is both. It is neither. It is everything.

You close your eyes. You breathe. You live.

The threshold is behind you. The distant threshold. You have crossed it. You have passed through. You have left the war. You have left the lie.

You have found the truth. The truth is simple. The truth is hard. The truth is you.

You are not the hero. You are not the villain. You are the man in between. You are the shadow and the light. You are the blood and the bone.

You are human.

The fire crackles. The wind blows. The world turns.

You are alive.

You are free.

The end is not a death. The end is a beginning. The end is a breath. The end is a hope.

You open your eyes. You look at Edward. He is smiling. It is a small smile. It is a real smile.

"Thank you," you say.

"For what?" he asks.

"For staying," you say.

He nods. He picks up his stone. He holds it. He looks at you.

"We are still here," he says.

You nod. You drink your tea. You feel the warmth. You feel the peace.

The story is over. The story is just beginning.

The threshold is open. The door is open. The path is clear.

You walk. You walk. You walk.

Into the light. Into the dark. Into the unknown.

You are Thomas. You are alive.

You are free.
