The Distant Threshold
You wake with dust in your teeth. It tastes like chalk and old stone. The room is dark. A single candle burns. The wax is black. It smells of rot. You are in a tower. You are a child. You are afraid.
Look at the door. It is wood. Oak. Heavy. The handle is iron. Cold. You reach for it. Your fingers tremble. You pull. It does not open. You pull again. Nothing. You push. Nothing. The lock is jammed. Or perhaps it is sealed. By magic. By law. By blood.
Who is outside?
You hear footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. They stop at the door. Silence. Then a knock. Three soft taps.
“Is someone there?” The voice is low. Smooth. It belongs to a man. You know the voice. It is the voice of the Lord. The High Justiciar. He wears white. He wears silver. He does not sweat. He does not bleed. Not anymore.
You do not answer. You cannot. Your throat is tight. Your heart hammers against your ribs. It sounds like a trapped bird.
The knocking stops.
“He is there,” a new voice says. It is rough. Gravelly. It belongs to the Guard. Or the Jailer. One of them. They are always there. Like shadows. Like stains.
“Let him in,” the Lord says.
The door groans. It opens. Light floods in. It is harsh. It blinds you. You squint. You see two figures. The Lord. And a woman.
The woman is your mother.
She is small. She is grey. Her hair is tangled. Her eyes are red. She looks at you. Her face is a mask. It is stone. She does not cry. She does not smile. She just looks.
“Thomas,” she says. Her voice is thin. A wire. It could snap. “Come here.”
You step forward. Your feet do not move. They are rooted. The floor is cold. It bites into your soles.
“You are safe now,” she says. It is a lie. You know it is a lie. The air is thick. It tastes of fear.
The Lord steps forward. He smiles. It is a gentle smile. It is warm. It is false.
“Child,” he says. “You have been naughty. You have broken the rules. You have touched the forbidden.”
You look at your hands. They are clean. You have touched nothing. You have hidden nothing. You have stolen nothing.
“I didn’t do it,” you say. Your voice is small. It is a mouse in a cathedral.
The Lord sighs. He shakes his head. He looks sad. He looks disappointed.
“Proof is not needed,” he says. “Intent is enough. You looked at the Gate. You wanted it. That is the crime. That is the sin.”
The Gate.
You think of the Gate. It is at the end of the hall. It is tall. It is black. It has no handle. It has no lock. It is just a wall. A wall of darkness. But you can hear it. It hums. It sings. It calls to you. It promises freedom. It promises truth. It promises the end.
You wanted it. Yes. You wanted to open it. You wanted to see what was behind it. You wanted to escape.
The Lord steps closer. He smells of lavender and metal.
“We will fix this,” he says. “We will clean you. We will make you good. We will make you fit.”
He reaches out. He touches your cheek. His hand is cold. It is heavy. It feels like a stone.
“Mother,” he says. “Please. Help me. Help your son.”
Your mother steps forward. She looks at the Lord. She looks at you. Her eyes are wet. But she does not weep. She nods. She nods slowly.
She reaches out. She takes your hand. Her grip is tight. It hurts. It burns.
“I am sorry, Thomas,” she whispers. “I am so sorry.”
You pull away. You try to run. You run to the window. The glass is thick. It is cold. You look out. The world is grey. The trees are bare. The sky is low. It presses down.
You bang on the glass. You scream. Your voice breaks.
“Let me out! Let me out!”
No one comes. The Lord watches. The Guard watches. Your mother watches.
They do not move. They do not help. They wait.
The Lord speaks. His voice is calm. It is final.
“The system is just,” he says. “The system is kind. You are part of it. You must be corrected. You must be aligned.”
He signals to the Guard. The Guard steps forward. He holds a key. It is small. It is silver. It glints in the candlelight.
He opens the door.
But you do not go out. You go in.
The Lord leads you. You follow. Your legs are weak. Your head spins. The floor tilts. The walls breathe.
You walk down the hall. The stones are cold. The shadows are long. The air is still.
You pass the mirrors. They show you. But you are not alone. There are ghosts in the glass. They are your friends. They are your teachers. They are dead. They are watching. They are judging.
They look at you with pity. They look at you with horror.
You want to look away. You cannot.
The Lord walks ahead. He does not turn. He knows the way. He knows the rules. He knows the price.
You reach the end of the hall.
The Gate.
It is there. It is huge. It is black. It hums. It sings.
It is beautiful. It is terrible.
The Lord stops. He turns. He looks at you.
“Now,” he says. “Look.”
You look.
Behind the Gate, you see it.
You see the truth.
You see the people. They are not dead. They are not gone. They are there. They are alive. They are free. They are laughing. They are playing. They are living.
But they are not human.
They are shadows. They are smoke. They are echoes.
They are the ones who came before. They are the ones who failed. They are the ones who were “corrected.”
They are you.
You see your face in the crowd. You see your mother’s face. You see the Lord’s face.
They are all there. They are all trapped. They are all free.
The Lord smiles.
“See?” he says. “It is not a prison. It is a home. It is a family. You belong here.”
You shake your head. You cannot stop. Your mind is a storm. Your thoughts are shards.
“No,” you say. “No. It’s a lie.”
The Lord frowns. He looks confused. He looks hurt.
“It is the truth,” he says. “It is the only truth.”
You look at your mother. She is crying. She is holding the key. She looks at you with love. It is obsessive. It is deep. It is dark.
She wants you to stay. She wants you to be safe. She wants you to be with her.
She would rather you be a ghost in a cage than a man in the world.
You understand. You understand the trap.
The system is not unjust. The system is loving. The system is kind. The system is cruel. It is all of it. It is none of it.
You look at the Gate. You look at the Lord. You look at your mother.
You have a choice.
You can go through. You can join them. You can be free. You can be gone.
You can stay. You can be broken. You can be fixed. You can be hers.
You close your eyes.
You feel the weight. You feel the cold. You feel the love.
It is heavy. It is crushing.
You open your eyes.
You look at the Lord.
“I refuse,” you say.
The word hangs in the air. It is small. It is sharp.
The Lord’s face changes. The smile vanishes. The warmth vanishes. The mask drops.
Behind the mask, there is nothing. There is only hunger.
“You cannot refuse,” he says. His voice is ice.
“I can,” you say.
You step forward. You do not run. You do not hide. You stand.
You take the key from your mother’s hand. She tries to stop you. She grabs your arm. Her nails dig into your skin. It bleeds.
“Thomas,” she screams. “Don’t. Please. Don’t.”
You pull away. You break free. You hold the key.
You look at the Lord.
“I choose the pain,” you say. “I choose the world. I choose the truth. Even if it hurts. Even if it kills me. I choose to be real.”
The Lord laughs. It is a dry sound. It is the sound of breaking bone.
“Then die,” he says.
He raises his hand. The air ripples. The shadows move. The Gate opens.
But you do not go in.
You turn. You run.
You run to the window. You break the glass. You shatter it. The shards cut your face. The blood runs. It is warm.
You jump.
You fall.
The wind roars. The world spins.
You hit the ground.
It is hard. It is cold. It is real.
You lie there. You look up.
The sky is open. It is blue. It is vast.
You are alone.
Your mother is screaming above. The Lord is silent. The Guard is gone.
You are free.
You are broken.
You are alive.
You stand up. Your legs shake. Your body aches. Your head spins.
You walk. You walk away from the tower. You walk into the forest.
The trees are bare. The leaves are dry. The ground is soft.
You walk.
You do not look back.
You cannot.
If you look back, you will see them. You will see the love. You will see the trap. You will see the peace.
And you will go back.
You will join the shadows. You will join the family. You will join the lie.
So you walk.
You walk into the dark. You walk into the cold. You walk into the fear.
You walk alone.
But you are not empty.
You are full.
You are full of pain. You are full of choice. You are full of truth.
And that is enough.
That is all you have.
That is all you need.
You walk.
The snow begins to fall.
It is white. It is clean. It covers your footprints. It covers your past. It covers your name.
You are no one.
You are everyone.
You are free.
