The Faded Paradox
The fog is thick. It tastes of iron. You wake. You are not in your bed. You are in the mud. The cold bites your neck. You sit up. Your hands shake. They are black with dirt. And blood. Whose blood? You do not know. You do not care. You look around. The forest is grey. The trees are skeletons. The sky is a bruise. You are a soldier. Or you were. The badge on your chest is gone. The rifle is gone. You have only your boots. And the mud.
You walk. Your legs are heavy. Lead. You do not remember how you got here. You remember the order. Move north. Secure the line. That is all. But the line is not there. The world is broken. The path is a wound in the earth. It splits. Left and right. You must choose. This is the boundary. The edge of the map. You step left.
The silence is loud. It presses against your ears. You hear a breath. Not yours. It is close. You turn. No one is there. Just a fox. It watches you. Its eyes are glass. It runs. You follow. You are hunting. You are the hunter. But what are you hunting? The truth. The thing that broke you.
You find a cabin. Wood. Rotting. The door hangs off its hinge. You enter. The air is stale. Dust hangs in the air like ghosts. There is a table. A chair. A mirror. The glass is cracked. A spider web spans the corner. You look in the mirror. Your face is pale. Your eyes are red. You look like a corpse. You spit on the glass. The spit slides down. You are alive.
Who are you? You ask the room. The room does not answer. You take out your notebook. The pages are wet. You write. I am here. I am lost. The ink smears. You write again. I am looking for the traitor.
You remember. There was a man. A voice in the dark. He said, Go. He said, Stop. He was with you. Or so you thought. He was the guide. The one who knew the way. But the way led to a cliff. To a fall. To the end. You do not trust him. You do not trust anyone.
You leave the cabin. The fog is thicker now. It eats the trees. You walk faster. Your heart beats like a drum. Boom. Boom. Boom. You hear a sound. A whistle. Thin. Sharp. It cuts the air. You stop. You listen. It comes from the left. The path you did not take.
You turn back. You go to the right path. The one with the cabin. No. The other. The one you abandoned. You walk into the fog. The ground is soft. Mire. It pulls at your ankles. You fight it. You pull free. You keep moving. The whistle stops. Silence returns.
You find a road. Gravel. It stretches into the dark. You walk on it. Your boots crunch. The sound is alien. It is too loud. You stop. You wait. Nothing. You move. You see lights. Distant. Yellow. A village. Or a town. You are hungry. You are thirsty. You need help.
You walk toward the lights. The fog lifts. The air is cleaner. You smell smoke. Wood. Food. You are human again. You see a house. A porch. A light in the window. You knock. No answer. You knock again. Hard. The door opens. A man stands there. He is old. His face is lined. He holds a gun.
Who are you? he asks.
I am a soldier, you say. I am lost.
You are not lost, he says. You are caught.
He steps aside. You enter. The room is warm. A fire burns. There is a table. Food. Bread. Cheese. You sit. You eat. You do not speak. The man watches you. His eyes are hard. He does not trust you.
Where did you come from? he asks.
The forest, you say.
From the north?
Yes.
You are late, he says. The battle is over.
You stop eating. You look up. What battle?
The one that broke the world. You were there. Or you should have been.
You do not understand. You look at the man. He is not a soldier. He is a farmer. Or a priest. He is not your enemy. But he is not your friend. He is the boundary. The line between you and the rest.
You must leave, he says.
Why?
Because you are not what you say you are.
You stand. Your legs feel weak. What do you mean?
He points to the mirror on the wall. It is clean. No crack. You look. Your face is different. Younger. Stronger. But your eyes. They are empty. They are dead.
You are not a man, he says. You are a ghost. Or a thing. Something made by the fog.
You deny it. You shout. I am real. I have pain. I have fear.
Pain is easy to fake, he says. Fear is easier.
He picks up the gun. He aims it at you. You do not move. You accept it. You are tired. You are done. The boundary has closed. You are on the wrong side.
Shoot, you say.
He lowers the gun. No. You are not mine to kill.
He opens the back door. The night air rushes in. Cold. Clean. Go.
You walk out. The fog is behind you. You are in the open. The stars are out. They are bright. They are indifferent. You look at them. You are small. You are nothing.
You walk. You do not know where. You do not care. You are free. You are alone. You are the paradox. The man who is not a man. The soldier who is not a soldier. You are the end.
You walk for hours. The moon rises. It is full. White. It watches you. You feel its gaze. It is heavy. You sit on a rock. You rest. Your head hurts. You close your eyes. You dream.
You dream of the man. The guide. The traitor. He is there. In the dream. He is standing in the fog. He smiles. He waves. Come, he says.
You run to him. You reach for his hand. You touch it. It is cold. Ice. You pull back. He is not there. You are alone. The fog is everywhere. You are in it. You are part of it.
You wake. You are on the rock. The moon is gone. The sky is grey. The fog is back. It is thick. It is hungry. You stand up. Your legs are stiff. You look around. The path is gone. The road is gone. The cabin is gone. You are in the middle of the woods.
You walk. You must walk. You do not stop. You do not look back. You are the hunter. And the prey. You are the question. And the answer.
You find a river. It is wide. Dark. The water moves slowly. You look at your reflection. It is clear. Your face is there. But it is wrong. The eyes are not yours. They are his. The man’s. The traitor’s.
You scream. The sound is lost. The water absorbs it. You kneel. You drink. The water is cold. It wakes you up. You are not him. You are you.
You cross the river. You wade in. The current is strong. It pulls you. You fight. You swim. You reach the other side. You crawl out. You are on land. You are alive.
You look back. The river is wide. The fog covers it. You are on the far side. The boundary is crossed. You are in the unknown.
You walk. The trees are different. They are tall. They are old. They whisper. You do not listen. You keep moving. You are heading south. Away from the fog. Away from the past.
You find a village. Small. Quiet. The people are afraid. They hide in their homes. You walk through the streets. No one stops you. You are a stranger. You are a warning.
You find a church. It is empty. You enter. The air is cool. The pews are empty. The altar is bare. You kneel. You pray. You do not know who you are praying to. You pray for the end. For the peace.
You hear a sound. Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. You turn. A man walks in. He is young. He is clean. He has no gun. He holds a book. He looks at you. He does not fear you.
Who are you? you ask.
I am the keeper, he says.
Of what?
Of the truth.
You stand. You approach him. You are close. You can smell his soap. It is fresh. He is real.
What is the truth? you ask.
You are the mistake, he says.
You do not understand. You look at him. His eyes are kind. They are sad.
The world is not broken, he says. It is healing. The fog is the scar. And you are the infection.
You feel a pain. In your chest. Sharp. Hot. You gasp. You fall to your knees. The pain is real. It is yours.
Let me go, he says.
You look at him. You see the kindness. You see the pity. You understand. You are not the hero. You are not the victim. You are the flaw. The error in the code.
You close your eyes. The pain fades. The fog clears. You are light. You are air. You are gone.
The man closes the book. He walks out. The church is empty. The dust settles. The silence returns. It is complete. It is final.
You are free.
The end.
