The Pale Shadows

The glass breaks first.

You hear it. A sharp crack. Then a wet thud.

The shop is dark. The air is cold. You are alone.

The bell above the door is still ringing. It has been ringing for three days. You did not fix it. You were busy. You were busy with the ledger. You were busy with the debt.

You stand up. Your knees pop. You are old. Your hands shake. You look at the floor.

The vase is gone.

It was on the shelf. The blue one. The one with the dragon. You polished it every night. You whispered to it. You knew its name.

It is not there now.

You look around. The shelves are empty. The dust is thick. The clock on the wall ticks. Tick. Tick. Tick. It sounds like a heartbeat. It sounds like a countdown.

You walk to the back room. You lock the door. You lean against the wood. You breathe.

In. Out.

The system is here. The system is always here.

They took the license. They took the sign. They took the window display. They said the numbers were wrong. They said the margins were tight. They said the world was changing.

You did not fight. You nodded. You signed the paper. You accepted the defeat. It was easier that way. To nod. To sign. To let them take it.

You thought if you gave it all up, they would leave you be. You thought if you were small, they would forget you.

But the shop remained. The walls remained. The dust remained.

And now the vase is gone.

You go back to the front. You turn on the light. The bulb flickers. It buzzes. It is a sick sound.

You see the footprints.

They are in the dust. Small feet. Bare feet.

They lead from the door. They lead to the shelf. They stop.

You follow them. You feel your heart beat in your throat.

There is a tear in the wallpaper. A dark stain. It looks like blood. It looks like ink.

You touch it. It is dry. It is cold.

You remember the noise. The ringing bell. You thought it was the wind. You thought it was a customer. You ignored it. You were so tired. You were so angry at the bank. You were so angry at the men in suits.

You did not look up. You did not look at the door.

The footprints lead to the window. The window is open. The night air comes in. It smells of rain. It smells of wet stone.

You look out. The street is empty. The lights are off. The world is sleeping.

But you are not sleeping. You are awake. You have been awake for a long time.

You sit down on the stool. You put your head in your hands.

You are a man of your word. You were. You kept your promises. You paid your bills. You served your customers. You were good.

But the system does not care if you are good. It only cares if you are useful. And you are no longer useful. You are a ghost in your own life.

The bell rings again.

You jump. Your heart stops. Then it starts. Fast. Hard.

You look at the door. It is closed. The lock is tight.

But the bell is ringing.

You stand up. You walk to the door. Your legs are stiff. Your back hurts.

You put your hand on the handle. It is cold. Ice cold.

You do not open it. You cannot.

You listen.

There is a voice. It is soft. It is close. It is right behind your ear.

"Give it back."

You spin around.

No one is there.

The room is empty. The shelves are bare. The dust is still.

"Who is there?" you say. Your voice is a whisper. It cracks.

"Give it back."

You look at the floor. The footprints are still there. But they are moving. They are crawling. Like ants. Like worms. They are creeping toward you.

You step back. The stool falls over. It clatters on the floor.

The footprints stop.

You look at your hands. They are covered in dust. You shake it off. It falls like snow.

You look at the mirror on the wall.

Your face is there. It is pale. Your eyes are wide. Your mouth is open.

You are not alone in the mirror.

There is someone else. Standing behind you.

It is you. But it is not you.

It is the boy. The boy who stole the vase. The boy who lives in the walls.

You have seen him before. In the shadows. In the corners. You thought he was a trick of the light. You thought you were tired.

But he is real. He has always been real.

He is the part of you that you cut away. The part that was wild. The part that was free. The part that did not care about the ledger. The part that did not care about the system.

He is smiling.

You are not smiling.

"Let him go," you say. Your voice is steady now. You are not afraid. You are tired. You are so tired.

The boy in the mirror shrugs. He points to the window.

The window is open. The night air rushes in. It feels like a hand. It pushes against your chest.

You look at the vase. It is not on the floor. It is not in the trash.

It is in the boy’s hand. In the mirror.

He holds it out to you.

"Take it," the boy says.

You reach out. Your hand passes through the glass. It is cold. It is wet.

You grab the vase.

It is heavy. It is solid.

You pull it into the room. The mirror shatters.

The glass falls. A thousand pieces. A thousand reflections.

You hold the vase. It is blue. The dragon is painted on it. The eyes are bright.

You are crying. You do not know why.

The bell stops ringing.

The silence is loud. It is deafening.

You look at the floor. The footprints are gone. The dust is undisturbed.

You are alone.

But you are not empty.

You hold the vase. You feel its weight. You feel its history. You feel the hands that made it. You feel the hands that bought it. You feel the hands that stole it.

You feel your own hands.

They are not shaking anymore.

You walk to the sink. You fill the basin with water. You are careful. You are gentle.

You wash the vase. The water runs clear. The blue shines. The dragon looks at you.

You dry it. You put it on the shelf. It is in the right place. It is where it belongs.

You stand back. You look at it.

You feel a change. A shift. A settling.

The system is still there. The debt is still there. The bank is still there. The men in suits are still there.

But they are far away. They are outside the walls. They are in the dark.

You are inside the light.

You pick up the phone. The line is dead. You have not paid for it.

You pick up the pen. You pick up the paper.

You write a letter.

To the bank. To the manager. To the system.

You write: I am not paying. I am not signing. I am not leaving.

You are not fighting. You are not begging.

You are stating a fact.

I am here.

I am not gone.

You fold the letter. You seal it.

You do not send it. You put it in your pocket.

You look at the door. You lock it. You turn the key.

You walk to the back room. You open the door.

The night is there. The stars are there. The moon is full. It is pale. It is bright.

You step out.

You close the door behind you. You do not lock it.

You walk down the street. The air is cold. It bites your face.

You walk fast. You walk hard.

You do not look back.

You are not a ghost. You are not a shadow.

You are a man. You are alive.

The vase is in the shop. It is safe. It is waiting.

You will come back. You will fix the bell. You will pay the debt. Or you will not.

It does not matter.

You matter.

You walk into the night. The night swallows you. The night holds you.

You are free.

You are afraid.

You are happy.

The two things are the same.

You smile.

The moon smiles back.

The story ends.

The silence returns.

But it is a different silence now.

It is the silence of a man who has found his voice.

It is the silence of a man who has found his heart.

It is the silence of a man who is no longer alone.

You are there.

I am there.

We are there.

The end.
