The Golden Farce

The rain fell in sheets. It hammered the tin roof of the shanty. I held the rifle. My hands shook. Not from cold. From hunger. The barrel was cold iron. The wood was damp oak. I looked at the bird. It sat on the branch. A wren. Small. Brown. It sang. A high, thin note. It did not fear me. I was a ghost. A shadow in the mist.

My name is Thomas Bradshaw. I was a soldier once. Now I am a man who eats. I hunt. I kill. I am alone. The house is empty. Margaret is gone. She left me. She took the dog. She took the warmth. She took the light. I stayed. I stayed for the duty. I stayed for the debt.

The wren sang on. I raised the rifle. The scope clicked. A soft sound. In the silence, it was loud. I breathed in. I breathed out. The bird moved. A twitch of the wing. I waited. The rain blurred the glass. The world outside was gray. The world inside was dark. I pulled the trigger. The crack was sharp. The wren fell. It did not sing. It lay on the mud. Still.

I did not pick it up. I could not. I lowered the rifle. My heart hammered. It beat like a drum. It beat like a war. I was not a killer. I was a servant. I served the law. I served the crown. I served nothing now. I was free. I was broken.

A knock at the door. Three raps. Hard. Wood on wood. I froze. Who could it be? No one comes here. The roads are bad. The winter is cruel. I stood still. The knock came again. Louder. Insistent. I moved to the door. My boots creaked on the floorboards. I did not look back. I looked at the rifle. It leaned in the corner. A slumbering beast. I left it there. I opened the door.

A man stood in the rain. He was tall. He wore a coat of dark wool. It was heavy. It was old. His face was pale. His eyes were dark. He smiled. It was a thin smile. It did not reach his eyes.

"Thomas," he said. His voice was low. It was smooth. Like oil.

I knew him. I knew his name. I knew his face. He was my brother. Or he was a lie. Or he was a ghost. I did not speak. I stood in the doorway. The rain dripped from his hat. It dripped onto my floor.

"Come in," I said. My voice was rough. It was dry.

He stepped inside. He closed the door. The wind died. The silence returned. It was heavy. It pressed against my ears. He looked around the room. He saw the bare walls. He saw the cold hearth. He saw the rifle. He stopped. His eyes met mine.

"You still hunt," he said.

"I must eat," I said.

He laughed. It was a dry sound. Like leaves skittering on stone. "You are a brave man, Thomas. You are a foolish man. You are a ghost."

He sat on the chair. It creaked under his weight. He did not take off his hat. He kept it in his hands. He twisted the brim. His fingers were long. They were pale.

"Who sent you?" I asked.

No one.

"Who?"

No one.

I stared at him. The rain tapped on the glass. Tap. Tap. Tap. A rhythm. A countdown.

"You know why I am here," he said.

I did not. I wanted to say no. But I knew. I had always known. The debt was due. The law was coming. The system was hungry. It ate the poor. It ate the weak. It ate the brave. It ate me.

"I am the law," he said.

"You are a man," I said.

"I am the law. I am the order. I am the end."

He stood up. He moved toward me. His steps were soft. His eyes were hard. He reached into his coat. He pulled out a pistol. It was black. It was shiny. It was beautiful. It was death.

"Give me the rifle," he said.

"No."

"Thomas."

"No."

He pointed the gun at me. The barrel was thin. It was small. It could kill. It could save. It could do nothing. It was a tool. It was a toy. It was a truth.

"You are a traitor," he said.

"I am a man," I said.

"You are a fool."

"I am free."

He fired.

The sound was a shout. It filled the room. It shook the dust from the ceiling. I did not fall. I did not move. The bullet hit the wall. It hit the wood. It made a hole. A small, dark mouth. It did not hit me.

I looked at the hole. I looked at him. He was shocked. His mouth was open. His eyes were wide. He did not understand. He did not know.

I moved. I was fast. I was old. I was strong. I grabbed the rifle. I raised it. I pointed it at him.

"Stay down," I said.

He did not move. He was frozen. He was a statue. He was a ghost.

I fired. The rifle kicked. The noise was louder. It was final. The bullet hit him. It hit his chest. It hit the coat. It hit the bone. He fell. He fell slowly. He fell like a tree. He fell like a leaf. He lay on the floor. He did not move. He did not breathe. He was gone.

I stood there. I held the rifle. My hands shook. My heart beat. I had killed him. I had killed the law. I had killed the order. I had killed the end.

I looked at the hole in the wall. I looked at the body. I looked at the wren. It was still on the floor. It was still silent. It was still dead.

I walked to the window. I looked out. The rain was stopping. The clouds were breaking. A sliver of sun came through. It was thin. It was weak. It was gold. It hit the floor. It hit the body. It hit the wren.

I felt a change. It was inside me. It was deep. It was cold. It was warm. I was not free. I was not brave. I was not a hero. I was a man. I was a part of the cycle. I was a link in the chain. I was a stone in the river.

I picked up the wren. It was light. It was small. I held it in my hand. It was cold. It was still. I looked at it. I saw myself. I saw my face. I saw my eyes. I was the bird. I was the hunter. I was the prey. I was the gun. I was the bullet.

I put the wren on the table. I sat down. I closed my eyes. I waited. The rain stopped. The sun shone. The silence was complete.

I opened my eyes. I stood up. I picked up the rifle. I picked up the pistol. I put them in my bag. I put my coat on. I went to the door. I opened it. The air was cold. The air was clean. The air was free.

I stepped out. I closed the door. I did not lock it. I walked into the mist. I walked into the rain. I walked into the world. I did not look back. I did not think. I did not feel. I was gone.

The house stood empty. The rain fell. The sun shone. The wren lay on the table. The body lay on the floor. The silence remained. The cycle turned. The wheel spun. The stone rolled. The river flowed. The end was the beginning. The beginning was the end. I was the bird. I was the hunter. I was the gun. I was the bullet. I was the man. I was the ghost. I was the free. I was the bound. I was the brave. I was the fool. I was the law. I was the traitor. I was the end. I was the start.

The rain fell. The sun shone. The silence was complete.
