The Pale Mist

The iron key is cold in your palm, a small, brutal weight that has settled into the crease of your skin so deeply it feels less like an object and more like a bone that has grown there, a calcified extension of your own hand that throbs with a faint, rhythmic pulse in time with the beating of your heart. You stand at the edge of the cliff where the moorland drops away into the grey, churning expanse of the sea, the wind biting at your face with the sharp, indifferent teeth of winter, and you are trying to remember the taste of the wine you drank last night, the taste of the bread you tore, the sound of the horse whinnying in the stable, but the memories are thin, stretched out like old parchment until they tear, and all that remains is the sensation of the key, the cold, hard truth of it, and the knowledge that you are alone, truly alone, in a way that you have never been before, not even in the years of solitary guard duty, not even in the dark hours of the watch, not even in the silence of your own skull when the world outside has ceased to matter. The mist is rising from the water, a pale, ghostly thing that climbs the rocks and swallows the land, erasing the boundary between the earth and the sky, between the solid and the liquid, between the self and the void, and you are standing in the middle of it, a figure in a black coat, a man of the law, a soldier of the state, a servant of the crown, yet you are also a thief, a traitor, a killer, though you have not killed, not yet, not with your hands, though you have killed with your silence, with your complicity, with your willingness to look away when the truth was staring you in the face, and now you are here, at the end of the road, at the end of the line, at the end of the story, and the only thing left to do is to decide what you are, what you have always been, and what you will become in the moment that follows, the moment of release, the moment of judgment, the moment of the end.

You remember the night it began, the night the Lord Ashworth came to your door, his face pale and drawn, his eyes wide with a fear that you had never seen in him before, a fear that was not for himself but for his estate, his name, his legacy, and he told you that the servants were talking, that the maids were whispering, that the men in the fields were looking at him with suspicion, and he asked you to help him, to find the one who was spreading the rumors, to find the one who was threatening his power, and you said yes, you said yes because you were a man of duty, a man of honor, a man who believed in the order of things, in the hierarchy that kept the world from falling apart, in the chain that bound the lowly to the high, the weak to the strong, the mortal to the divine, and you did not think to ask who was threatening him, you did not think to ask what he had done to make the servants whisper, you did not think to ask why the men in the fields looked at him with such hatred, you simply took the key, the iron key that he gave you, the key to the cellar, the key to the secrets, the key to the truth, and you went down into the dark, you went down into the cold, you went down into the place where the air was thick with the smell of damp earth and old blood and the sound of weeping, and you found the room, you found the cage, you found the boy, the boy who was not a servant, who was not a thief, who was not a traitor, but who was a prince, a son of the old king, a heir to the throne, and you looked at him, you looked at his face, his young, broken face, his eyes that held no fear, only a deep, profound sorrow, and you saw yourself in him, you saw your own reflection, your own trapped soul, your own lost freedom, your own destroyed self, and you knew, in that moment, that the Lord Ashworth was not the victim, that the Lord Ashworth was the monster, that the Lord Ashworth was the one who had stolen the boy, who had kept him, who had used him, who had broken him, and you knew that you could not go back, that you could not report, that you could not obey, that you could not be the man you had been, and so you took the key, you took the boy, you took the truth, and you ran, you ran into the night, you ran into the mist, you ran into the wilderness, and you have been running ever since, running from the law, running from the crown, running from the past, running from the self that you were, running towards the self that you are, the self that is free, the self that is broken, the self that is whole.

The mist is thick now, it is so thick that you cannot see the cliff edge, you cannot see the sea, you cannot see the ground beneath your feet, you cannot see your own hands, you cannot see your own face, you cannot see the key in your palm, but you feel it, you feel its coldness, you feel its weight, you feel its presence, and you know that it is the only thing that is real, the only thing that is true, the only thing that matters, and you know that you must let it go, you must let go of the key, you must let go of the past, you must let go of the law, you must let go of the duty, you must let go of the self, you must let go of everything, and you must fall, you must fall into the mist, you must fall into the sea, you must fall into the void, you must fall into the freedom, the terrible, beautiful, destructive freedom that consumes everything, that eats away at the edges of your soul, that burns away the last remnants of your identity, that leaves you with nothing but the wind, the water, the rock, the sky, the self, the void, the end. You stand there, you stand in the mist, you stand in the dark, you stand in the silence, and you feel the pull, the pull of the abyss, the pull of the sea, the pull of the freedom, and you know that you are not afraid, you know that you are not angry, you know that you are not sad, you know that you are only aware, only present, only here, only now, only this, and you raise your hand, you raise the key, you raise the symbol of your chains, the symbol of your duty, the symbol of your self, and you throw it, you throw it into the mist, you throw it into the sea, you throw it into the void, and you watch it fall, you watch it disappear, you watch it vanish, and you feel the lightness, the sudden, shocking, terrifying lightness of being free, of being unbound, of being unchained, of being alone, and you smile, you smile a small, sad, quiet smile, and you step forward, you step off the cliff, you step into the mist, you step into the sea, you step into the freedom, and you fall, you fall, you fall, and the world goes white, and the world goes dark, and the world goes silent, and you are gone, you are free, you are nothing, you are everything, you are the mist, you are the sea, you are the wind, you are the stone, you are the self, you are the void, you are the end, you are the beginning, you are the life, you are the death, you are the truth, you are the lie, you are the key, you are the lock, you are the door, you are the passage, you are the journey, you are the destination, you are the home, you are the exile, you are the law, you are the chaos, you are the order, you are the disorder, you are the self, you are the other, you are the one, you are the many, you are the past, you are the future, you are the present, you are the eternal, you are the moment, you are the now, you are the here, you are the there, you are the everywhere, you are the nowhere, you are the somewhere, you are the anywhere, you are the everywhere, you are the nowhere, you are the void, you are the full, you are the empty, you are the full, you are the empty, you are the void, you are the full, you are the empty, you are the void.
