The Distant Ghost
The seal breaks.
It is a small act. You press the thumb into the wax. The red clay shatters. It flies apart. Fragments scatter on the stone table. You look at the pieces. They are jagged. They are dead.
You are in the keep. The air is cold. It smells of damp wool and iron. You are a stranger here. You have come from the sea. You have crossed the water. You carry a name that does not fit. Your name is Thomas. But here, you are the Scribe. You are the hand that writes what the King cannot say.
The King is not a man. He is a presence. He sits on the high seat. He wears a crown of gold. It is heavy. It is bright. It blinds you. You do not look up. You look at the seal. You look at the broken wax.
You are an exile. You left your home. You left the quiet fields. You left the people who knew your face. You came here for power. You came here for order. You thought the order would save you. You were wrong.
The scribe before you was old. He died in his sleep. They found him on the floor. His hand was still on the quill. The ink was dry. You took his place. You are the second.
The King speaks. His voice is low. It rumbles in the chest.
"Write," he says.
You pick up the pen. The nib is sharp. It cuts the air. You dip it in the black ink. You touch the parchment. You write a single line.
The line is a command. It is a decree. It changes the law. It takes the land from the poor. It gives it to the rich. You write it because you must. You write it because the King watches. You write it because your hands move. They do not stop. They do not ask permission.
You are a machine. You are a tool. You are the mirror.
The mirror shows what is not there. It shows the King’s will. It hides your face. You look into the ink. You see your own eyes. They are dark. They are tired. They are yours.
The door opens. A woman enters. She is small. She is pale. She wears a gray dress. She is the servant. She carries a tray. The tray has a cup of wine. The wine is red. It looks like blood.
She does not look at you. She looks at the King. She bows. She places the cup on the table. She turns to leave.
"Wait," the King says.
She stops. Her hands tremble.
"Who is she?" the King asks.
You do not answer. You know who she is. You have seen her before. You saw her in the village. You saw her in the field. You saw her standing by the well. She was young. She was alive.
She is not the servant. She is the ghost. She is the memory. She is the truth.
You look at her. You look into her eyes. They are empty. They are full. They are the same.
"You are not real," you say. Your voice is thin. It shakes.
The King laughs. It is a cold sound. It is a dry sound.
"Is she?" the King asks. "Is she real?"
You do not know. You do not know anything. You are the scribe. You write the lies. You write the truth. They are the same. The ink is black. The paper is white. The line is straight.
The woman steps forward. She steps close to you. The smell of her is faint. It is the smell of rain. It is the smell of earth. It is the smell of home.
"You broke the seal," she says.
Her voice is soft. It is the voice you remembered. It is the voice you forgot.
"I had to," you say. "The King ordered it."
"The King ordered nothing," she says. "You ordered it. You wanted it. You wanted to be part of the power. You wanted to be safe. You wanted to be loved."
She is wrong. She is right. You do not know.
You look at the broken seal. The pieces are still on the table. They are red. They are bright. They are beautiful.
"I came here to find order," you say. "I came here to find peace."
"There is no peace," she says. "There is only the writing. There is only the line. You are the line. You are the ink."
The King speaks again.
"Write the decree," he says. "Finish it."
You look at the parchment. The first line is there. The second line is blank. The third line is blank. The page is full of silence.
You pick up the pen. You dip it in the ink. You hover over the paper. Your hand is steady. Your heart is not.
You think of the field. You think of the well. You think of the rain. You think of the life you left. It was simple. It was quiet. It was real.
Here, it is loud. Here, it is bright. Here, it is false.
You are the mirror. You reflect the King. You reflect the power. You reflect the lie.
But the mirror is broken. You broke it. You shattered the seal. You shattered the illusion.
You look at the woman. She is gone. She is not there. She is in the air. She is in the dust. She is in the ink.
You are alone.
The King waits. The room is silent. The candles burn. The shadows lengthen.
You must write. You must finish. You must be the scribe.
But you are not the scribe. You are the exile. You are the one who left. You are the one who came back.
You look at the pen. It is a tool. It is a weapon. It is a key.
You drop the pen.
It hits the table. It makes a small sound. It is a loud sound. It is a final sound.
The King stands. He looks at you. His face is hard. His eyes are cold.
"Pick it up," he says.
You do not move. You stand. You are tall. You are thin. You are broken.
"I cannot," you say.
"Why?" the King asks.
"Because I am not you," you say. "I am not the power. I am not the order. I am the man. I am the exile. I am the one who remembers."
The King’s face changes. The gold in his eyes fades. The light leaves his face. He looks old. He looks tired. He looks human.
"You are a fool," he says.
"I am free," you say.
The word hangs in the air. It is light. It is heavy. It is true.
The King sits down. He does not speak. He looks at the broken seal. He looks at the empty cup. He looks at the ink.
You pick up the pieces of the seal. You hold them in your hand. They are warm. They are soft. They are real.
You put them in your pocket. You leave the room. You walk down the stairs. The stone is cold under your feet. The air is sharp. The night is dark.
You go out into the courtyard. The stars are out. They are bright. They are far. They are indifferent.
You walk to the gate. The gate is open. The guards are asleep. You step out. You step into the field.
The grass is wet. The mud is soft. The wind is cold.
You walk. You do not look back. You do not run. You walk.
You are the exile. You are the mirror. You are the line.
But the line is broken. The mirror is shattered. The seal is gone.
You are free.
You are alone.
You are the man.
You walk into the dark. You walk into the night. You walk into the unknown.
You do not know where you are going. You do not know where you are from. You do not know who you are.
But you are alive.
You are real.
You are here.
The story is over. The story is beginning.
You breathe. The air is sweet. The air is fresh. The air is yours.
You smile. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is a true smile.
You continue.
