The Last Lullaby

Mother cried. Lily remembered that. Mother cried in the kitchen, with her back turned, and Lily did not know why. She only knew they were leaving. They were taking a boat. Ben was laughing—he held his tin soldier. Lily stuffed the teddy bear into the bag. The bag was heavy. Mother said, "You do not need to bring so much," but Lily said, "The bear has to come."

The boat was big. There were so many people. Lily thought it was like the market day. Someone was crying, but Lily was not afraid. Mother held her hand, held Ben's hand too. The boat moved. Lily stood at the edge and looked at the water. The water was blue. Mother said, "Do not go too close."

At night, the room was small. Three people in a small room. Ben had a fever. Mother kept touching his forehead. Lily could not sleep. She listened to the sounds outside—the water, the footsteps, the talking. She thought about the cat at home. Was the cat still there?

Then the boat shook. Lily thought it was a wave. But waves did not make the lights go out. The lights went out. Someone was speaking loudly. Lily did not understand. Mother pulled her to the corner. Covered them with blankets.

The water came. Lily thought it was strange—how could water be here? Mother said, "Do not be afraid." Lily was not afraid. She was just cold. Very cold. Mother kept singing. Lily closed her eyes. She thought about the cat. The cat must be hungry. She thought about Ben. Ben was shaking. She put her hand on Ben's forehead. Still warm.

Then the water reached her knees. Then her waist. Mother lifted her up. Lily saw Mother's face. Mother was crying. But Lily did not cry. Lily just looked at Mother.

Someone pulled Lily's hand. She opened her eyes. A strange face. Mother was gone. Ben was gone. The teddy bear was gone.

Lily was brought to another boat. Many people. Many people crying. Lily did not cry. She held her hands. Nothing in them. The teddy bear was gone.

Lily stopped speaking. The doctor said she needed time. Time came. Lily still did not speak. She always looked at the water.
