The Wistful Silence

You are standing in the kitchen. It is midnight. The house is silent, but it is not empty. You can hear the walls breathing. You know this house. You have lived here for ten years. You have studied it. You have mapped its frequencies. You believe you understand the mechanism of decay. You are wrong.

The coffee maker gurgles. It is a low, wet sound. It sounds like a throat clearing. You look at the machine. It is a standard model. Stainless steel. Black plastic. It is ordinary. But the water inside is not clear. It is thick. It is black. It moves without gravity. It pools in the center. It does not drip. It hovers.

You reach for the carafe. Your hand stops. You do not touch it. You are a physicist. You deal in vectors. You deal in mass and time. You do not deal in the impossible. But the impossible is sitting in your kitchen. It is waiting for you to acknowledge it.

Your phone buzzes. It is Daniel.

You pick it up. Your fingers are cold. The screen is bright. It burns your eyes.

"Are you awake?" the text reads.

You type: Yes.

"Come to the study."

You type: Why?

"Bring the notebook. The blue one."

You put the phone down. You look at the coffee maker. The black liquid is rising. It is touching the rim. It is about to spill. You back away. Your heart is a drum. It beats against your ribs. You know what this is. You have seen it before. You just forgot.

You walk to the hallway. The floorboards creak. They sound like bones breaking. The house is old. It is Victorian. It was built in 1892. It has seen many things. It has seen you. It has seen your mother. It has seen her mother before her. The bloodline is a wire. It is taut. It is vibrating.

You enter the study. The door is open. The light is on. It is a warm, amber glow. It comes from the desk lamp. Daniel is sitting there. He is wearing his robe. His hair is messy. He looks tired. He looks happy. He is smiling. It is a small, sad smile.

"Sit," he says.

You sit. The chair is leather. It is cool. You keep your distance. You do not look at him. You look at the bookshelf. The books are lined up by color. It is a system. It is your system. You organized them last month. You spent three days on it. You were happy then. You thought you had control.

"Look at me," Daniel says.

You look up. His eyes are dark. They are deep. You see yourself in them. You see your fear. You see your hope. You see the thing you cannot name.

"The coffee," he says.

"It is wrong," you say.

"It is right," he says.

"It is not possible."

"It is happening."

You stand up. You walk to the window. The glass is cold. You press your hand against it. Outside, the garden is dark. The trees are swaying. There is no wind. The branches move like arms. They reach for the house. They reach for you.

"I need to leave," you say.

"You cannot," Daniel says.

"I can. I will. I am leaving."

"You are not leaving. You are arriving."

You turn around. Your face is hard. Your voice is sharp. "Do not speak in riddles. I am a scientist. I need data. I need facts."

"The fact is that you are tired," he says. "The fact is that you have been running for years. The fact is that the loop is closing."

"I do not know what you mean."

"You do. You have always known. You just refused to see it. You built a career to hide from it. You built a house to hide from it. You built a marriage to hide from it. But the house knows. The house remembers."

You feel a pain in your chest. It is sharp. It is sudden. It is like a stone. You drop it. You gasp. You clutch your shirt. Daniel does not move. He watches you. He does not help you. He waits.

"I am not ill," you say.

"You are not ill. You are aligned."

The pain fades. It does not go away. It settles. It becomes part of you. It is a weight. It is a foundation.

"Tell me," you say.

"There is no telling," he says. "There is only remembering."

He stands up. He walks to the desk. He opens the drawer. He takes out a small box. It is wood. It is old. It is carved with symbols. You have seen these symbols. They are on the floorboards. They are in the foundation. They are in your blood.

He opens the box. Inside is a key. It is brass. It is green with age.

"For the door," he says.

"Which door?"

"The one that is not there."

You take the key. It is heavy. It is warm. It pulses. It beats with your heart. You look at Daniel. He is watching you. He is not angry. He is not afraid. He is peaceful. He has accepted it. You have not.

"Is it real?" you ask.

"Is pain real?" he asks. "Is love real? This is real. It is the most real thing in this house."

You put the key in your pocket. You walk to the door. You open it. You step out into the hallway. The house is quiet. The walls are breathing. The floor is soft. It is not wood. It is flesh. It is warm. It is alive.

You walk to the front door. Your hand shakes. You reach for the handle. It is cold. It is metal. It is solid. You turn it. It does not move. You push. It does not move. You pull. It does not move.

You are trapped.

You back away. You look at the ceiling. The plaster is cracking. Dust falls. It is white. It is like snow. It is like ash.

You run to the kitchen. The coffee maker is still there. The black liquid is overflowing. It is on the counter. It is on the floor. It is spreading. It is black. It is wet. It is cold.

You try to wipe it. It sticks to your hand. It is sticky. It is sweet. It smells like iron. It smells like blood.

You scream. Your voice is loud. It echoes. The house swallows it. The house drinks it.

Daniel appears in the doorway. He is holding the blue notebook. He is holding the pen. He is writing. He is writing fast. His hand is steady.

"Stop," you say.

"I cannot stop," he says. "It is writing me. I am just the hand."

You look at the notebook. The pages are full. The handwriting is yours. It is your handwriting. But the words are not yours. They are old. They are ancient. They are warnings.

*Do not open the door. Do not look at the sky. Do not trust the silence. The silence is the mouth. The mouth is the gate. The gate is the key. The key is the bone. The bone is the name.*

You read the last line. Your name is there. It is written in red ink. The ink is wet. It is fresh.

You look at Daniel. He is crying. His tears are black. They fall on the notebook. They blend with the ink.

"I am sorry," he says. "I could not save you. I could not save myself. We are the loop. We are the echo. We are the song that never ends."

You close your eyes. You feel the house. You feel the walls. You feel the floor. You feel the roof. You are inside it. It is inside you. You are one. You are the structure. You are the stress test. You are the failure.

You open your eyes. The kitchen is empty. The coffee maker is gone. The counter is clean. The floor is dry. The black liquid is gone.

You are alone.

You look at your hand. Your skin is black. It is from the wrist up. It is dry. It is cracked. It is like old bark. It is like wood.

You look at the door. The handle is turning. It is turning slowly. It is turning by itself.

You do not move. You do not scream. You stand still. You wait.

The door opens.

Light floods in. It is white. It is bright. It is blinding.

You step forward. You step into the light.

You do not look back.

You do not need to.

You are home.
