The Distant Machine

The bell has stopped.

You hear the silence where it used to be. It is a heavy, wet silence. It sits on the floor of the chapel like a dead dog. You stand by the altar. Your hand is still shaking. You look at your fingers. They are red. Not with blood. With dust. Fine, grey dust from the bronze. The great bell is gone. It is in three pieces now. The crackle is in your ears. The shatter is in your bones.

You are the keeper of the town. You are the law here. Or you were.

The bell was the law. It rang at dawn. It rang at dusk. It called the men to the fields. It called the women to the hearth. It warned of the storm. It sang for the dead. It was the voice of the valley. And now you have broken it.

You did it for her. For Elara.

She is not here. She is in the cellar. She is hiding. She is waiting for the morning to come. The morning that will not come. The light is failing. The shadows are long and thin. They stretch across the stone floor. They reach for you.

You feel the weight of the hammer in your mind. You can still feel the recoil. The first strike. The second. The third. The sound. God, the sound. It was not a ring. It was a scream. It tore the air. It shook the dust from the rafters. It was a sound that had teeth.

You remember the face of Alderman Vane.

He stood by the door. He watched you. He did not stop you. He did not shout. He just watched. His eyes were cold. They were the eyes of a man who owns the land. Who owns the people. Who owns the sky. He smiled. It was a thin, cruel smile. He knew what you were doing. He knew why. And he let you do it. Because he knew you were already dead.

He was the pressure. He was the weight on your chest. For ten years, he had pressed down on you. He had taken your brother. He had taken your land. He had taken your name. He had made you his dog. You walked on his leash. You barked at his command. You were his shadow.

But then there was Elara.

She was the light. She was the fire. She was the instinct. She loved you. Not with words. Not with letters. With her body. With her breath. With the way she looked at you. Like you were the only thing in the world that was real. Like you were the anchor. Like you were the ground.

She said, "We must go."

You said, "No."

She said, "He will take you."

You said, "He has taken me."

She cried. Her tears were hot. They burned your skin. She held your face in her hands. She kissed your lips. It tasted of salt and fear. It tasted of life.

She said, "Break it. Break the bell. Break the symbol. Break the curse."

You did not understand.

She said, "The bell is his power. It is his voice. It is the law. If you break it, you break the law. If you break the law, you are free."

You looked at the bell. It hung there. Dark and still. It was so heavy. It was so old. It was part of the stone. It was part of the town. It was part of you.

You picked up the hammer.

You struck.

The world stopped.

The sound was a beast. It roared. It bit. It tore. The dust fell like snow. The people outside screamed. They ran. They hid. They prayed.

Vane did not run. He stood there. He watched the bronze fly. He watched the crack spread. He watched the metal scream. He did not flinch. He did not blink. He just watched.

And you knew.

You knew it was a trap.

He had wanted this. He had needed this. He needed you to break it. He needed you to be the one. He needed you to be the monster. He needed you to be the traitor.

If the bell was broken by the townspeople, they would rebel. They would rise. They would fight.

But if it was broken by the law? By the keeper? By the man who was supposed to protect it?

Then the law was dead.

Then the law was a liar.

Then the town was free.

But not free from him. Free from order.

And in the chaos, he would win.

He would win because he was the only one who could restore it. He would win because he was the only one who had the power.

You realized it too late.

You realized it as the last piece fell.

You realized it as the silence came.

You looked at Vane.

He was still smiling.

He walked toward you. His boots clicked on the stone. Click. Click. Click. The sound was small. It was insignificant. It was the sound of a clock. The sound of time moving forward.

He stopped in front of you.

He did not say a word.

He reached out his hand.

He touched your face.

It was a gentle touch. It was a father’s touch. It was a god’s touch.

"You have done your duty," he said.

His voice was soft. It was quiet. It was the only sound in the world.

"You have served the town."

You looked at your hands. They were covered in dust. The dust was grey. It was like ash. It was like death.

You wanted to scream. You wanted to run. You wanted to find Elara. You wanted to hold her. You wanted to tell her you were sorry. You wanted to tell her you were wrong.

But you could not move.

Your legs were gone. Your arms were gone. Your voice was gone.

You were empty.

You were a shell.

You were the bell.

And you were broken.

The door opened.

Men came in. They wore black. They carried clubs. They did not look at you. They looked at the broken metal. They picked up the pieces. They carried them out. They treated it like garbage. They treated it like waste.

They did not see you.

You were invisible.

You were nothing.

The town was free.

The town was yours.

And you were alone.

***

Three days later.

You are in the cellar.

It is dark. It is cold. The air is stale. It smells of damp stone and fear.

Elara is there.

She is sitting on a box. She is holding a candle. The flame is small. It flickers. It dances. It is the only light.

She looks at you. Her eyes are red. She has been crying. She has not slept.

She does not speak.

You do not speak.

The silence is heavy. It presses against your eardrums. It presses against your heart.

She stands up. She walks toward you. Her feet are bare. They are cold. She touches your shoulder.

"I am sorry," she says.

Her voice is thin. It is weak. It is broken.

"Why did you do it?" you ask.

Your voice is a rasp. It is a whisper. It is a ghost.

"I had to," she says.

"No," you say. "I did it."

"Yes," she says. "You did it. For me."

"You lied to me."

"I told the truth."

"You told me I was free."

"I told you the law was broken."

"There is no law."

"There is always a law," she says. "There is always a power. And he is the power."

You look at her. You want to see the fire in her eyes. You want to see the love. You want to see the light.

But there is only fear.

There is only loss.

You feel a pain in your chest. It is sharp. It is hot. It is a burning. It is a fire.

You reach for her. You grab her wrist. You pull her close. You hold her. You hold her tight. You hold her until you break. You hold her until she breaks.

You kiss her. It is desperate. It is wild. It is primal. It is the last act of war.

She fights you. She pushes you away. She hits you. She scratches your face.

"Let go," she screams.

"You are mine," you growl.

"I am no one's," she says. "I am free."

You let go.

You fall back. You hit the stone. The impact is hard. It jolts your bones.

You look up. She is looking at you. She is breathing hard. Her chest is heaving.

She is alive.

You are alive.

The candle is dying. The flame is small. It is weak. It is about to go out.

You watch it.

You watch the light fade.

You watch the darkness grow.

You watch the end.

And you understand.

Justice did not come.

Justice was a lie.

The bell was not a symbol.

The bell was a warning.

And you had silenced it.

The darkness comes.

It is total.

It is complete.

It is yours.

You close your eyes.

You wait.

The silence is absolute.

It is eternal.

It is the only truth.
